Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

You go Grannycake and a fabulous, cannot get it on a colour chart shade of silvery fabulous. You look like a total scream too - the brown doodle is a proper laugh.

Squashit · 03/11/2017 19:06

I know and totally agree re dyed grey but how much more amazing would 1&2 look with naturally grey hair?

Grannycake = stunning hair 👍🏻

I do agree there Squashit but feel as if they haven't earnt it yet. The grey is very special - no trifling matter for flibbertigibberts.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 03/11/2017 19:12

I really like Kathleen Soriano's hair (Judge, Sky Landscape Artist of the year). That is what I am aiming for.

DameDoom · 03/11/2017 19:17

She looks fabulous - her crazy curls look so much lovelier in grey than blonde. She really oozes style and proves you don't have to be a size 6 to do so.
One word: classy.

Squashit · 03/11/2017 19:20

I am hoping one day to have hair like my mum’s colour. She covered this up with golden blonde beige dye for years.

Thanks. I have had to rethink colours and I now wear bright lipsticks for the first time ever but I stick to black, grey, and navy as neutrals and add in bright tops or scarves. I'm going through a bit of a hot pink phase at the moment. I'm going to keep it this length for a little while longer as I like the fact I can put it up or add waves but I am loving some of the shorter inverted Bob cuts on here so who knows

hazeyjane · 03/11/2017 19:22

This is my badgery do. Going shorter on the sides atm to try and get a sort if badgery Mohawk!

Even though you've doodled your mum's face, I can read so much. She really cares about looking good - and certainly does - is loads of fun, as I said before about someone else, a brilliant cook or at the least a very good hostess, intelligent, warm and witty.

My parents died when I was 26 - 6 months apart. Feel a bit envious.

DameDoom · 03/11/2017 19:31

hazey that is one brilliant cut and your colour is incredible. You look very cool.

BexleyRae · 03/11/2017 19:38

I started a thread a few weeks ago asking whether I should buzz my hair, but I chickened out and had a pixie with number 2 at the sides. I think I would have a much, if not more grey as hazey. I'm tempted again

EraArils · 03/11/2017 20:02

Love the 3rd picture in Squashit's last series. Maybe my hair texture will suit that style when it grows. I would really like my hair to be pure white but happy for that to take time getting there.

I started going grey at 17 and I absolute don't feel too young to be embracing my grey, my hair is grey and I've earned every single one of those greys. I dislike people asking me what my natural hair colour is, like I should hold on to my original colour throughout my life. My natural hair colour WAS dark ashy brown and now my natural colour IS grey/silver and white.

I agree that more people should embrace their natural colour because then ageing will have a different perception.

What about if you’re like my hairdresser calls ‘salt and pepper’ rather than ‘badger’? Is anyone else like this and loves it? Hairdresser says I’ve not got enough grey to stop dying my hair yet and I’m ‘too young’ (46)! I know she has a vested interest in saying that. I’m dark brown, almost totally grey at the sides, much less so on top and round the back. I tried growing it out a couple of years ago and it made me feel such a mess I gave in to dying it again. I managed about 3 inches, I knew I wasn’t going to look like some of these photos where people are all or majority grey and it looks amazing. My grey seemed just too bitty, not classy. I wasn’t brave enough to go really short or to stick it out to go all natural to see what it really looked like. I hate dying it though even though my hairdresser does do me some fab colours. Any advice or encouragement to give it another go would be welcome.

Squashit · 03/11/2017 23:05

Nong I think I am going to be very ‘salt & pepper’ and it can be stunning.

I'm growing out my blond highlights. Am 51 but been dyeing my hair since I was twenty one. Fed up with the expense and hassle!

Started growing out about 6 months ago to discover my real colours almost matched my highlighted ones! I, too, use the blue shampoo and conditioner once a week.

I have yet to get a new style. Had a shoulder length bob fro most of my life so really struggling to find something. No way could I pull off a pixie cut.

I do love the condition of my 'new' hair. Great to have some shine back.

IDismyname · 03/11/2017 23:26

I did briefly consider doing a Brave The Shave for Macmillan Cancer.

Too much of a chicken.

DameDoom · 03/11/2017 23:55

Love the salt and pepper pictures.
Airborne have you considered a much shorter bob? Mine was a lob until yesterday when my hairdresser insisted I go much shorter. Glad I did although I am wistfully envious of those who have the head shape for brilliant buzz type cuts.

EraArils · 04/11/2017 00:34

nong My hairdresser told me the exact same thing, that my hair wasn't going to be a good colour and that I'm too young, I'm 46. If I'm old enough to have grey hair then I'm not too young to wear my hair grey.

I wish I had stopped dyeing my hair when it was at the salt and pepper stage as I think that looks stunning.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 04/11/2017 00:35

Hmm, I think I am salt and pepper and probably a bit grounground ginger too. Like Hazyjane upthread, only with sandy tones in the mix too. At least it's interesting I suppose.

nong45 · 04/11/2017 07:09

Yes those salt and pepper pictures are great. I’m going to keep them and make it my New Years resolution to give it another go. Thanks for posting them!

Squashit · 04/11/2017 09:34

Feeling more positive today. Looking at great salt and pepper/grey hair styles really is proving helpful so I will pop some here in case it helps others too thinking about or currently transitioning.

Going to sort out my wardrobe later and gift some of my cashmere and donate other stuff. My make up is overdue a sort out as well. At least I can now tell what actually works with my colouring. Also going to make a sparkly black hat for tonight.

Any way onto the pics....

Dame if you feel able I would love to see your hair-it sounds fabulous 🙂

I'm developing a plan for my grow out and at the moment my first aim is picture 1 with my second aim being something like picture 2. I'll think about end result once I see the full head of hair.

Perhaps final result will be picture 3.

I might be a picture 1 by Christmas. I can live with that, although I do like it at the length right now but I want to see more of it.
