Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

Loving all the photos xx

illuminousopptomist · 03/11/2017 17:42

I admire you and am jealous of you in equal portions. I would love to this and one mum at school is doing the same.

DameDoom · 03/11/2017 17:47

Feedme you need to go for it. It's hair and it grows back. If I dressed and styled myself according to DH, I'd be stuck in the 80's with a head full of over-bleached bri-nylon. He is clueless.

I completely ignored his advice and he actually loves my hair and styling. Lucky for him otherwise it would be tough tits.

Never allow yourself to be styled by a straight man who also happens to be your partner. My DH has many fabulous qualities - style guru ain't one of them.

Squashit · 03/11/2017 17:50

Feedme my husband likes Nigella Lawson’s hair and banged on for ages about growing mine. I am not a long haired woman and have had a pixie since I was eight. Anyway I decided to surprise him one day with a long haired wig. I REALLY looked bad and he had to admit the pixie was what suited me best. Your husband finds you attractive as you are so do what feels right for you.

I do get what you mean re the odd two tone Hitler hair. Been there and redyed immediately hence the buzz.

illumininous give the woman a compliment if you can- it will mean the world to her 🙂

Any redhead ladies growing out the hair dye? I normally have mine semi permenantly dyed every six weeks or so (hair can't tolerate permenant dye) but I've left it now since June.

Hair is sandy with grey and silver highlights. I actually quite like it but my family are a bit disparaging.

Squashit · 03/11/2017 17:55

Tinkly your natural hair sounds absolutely lovely. Keep going because you won’t see how marvellous it truly is until the dye is gone.

Only black and white cats on Youtube carry off Hitler hair - but they do it so well I'll let them off.
How long before the back of my hair goes silver? Despite purple shampoo the blonde highlighted bit is a contrasting shade of yellowing fag end. I try not to look.

EraArils · 03/11/2017 17:58

My DH buzzed my hair off because he knew I was really unhappy with the straw mess that was my hair. Either he was being loving and kind or couldn't listen to another minute of me grumbling about it. Plus, I pointed out how much money I would save. He's frugal if not anything else.

He actually does genuinely like it, he says that he likes seeing more of my face. It also makes me smile more so that makes him happy.

I'm looking forward to seeing what my hair looks like as it grows and reveals itself. My hair is wavy too so that'll be interesting, its more wavy as it has become more grey. Soft waves now though and not crunchy ones anymore, shudder.

I've had short hair for years with the exception of the last year. I hated having longer hair but I might grow it out a bit now I have the fabulous colour to contend with.

Oooh I really want to grow my colour out and go naturally grey, I’m 47 and my mates say “nooooo, you’re too young, you’ve got plenty of time to do that” - kind of put me off.

Loving your photos and inspiration!

Squashit · 03/11/2017 18:21

I’m 42 and clearly not too young going by how grey it actually is 😁

Loving this thread! I’m 42 and a couple of years ago decided to stop dyeing, I’m a brunette with thick wavy hair and a large white strip right in front (a la cruella devil).

I love my hair now - it’s much much healthier, the colour is beautiful, and the grey just works. I am noticing lots of women taking the plunge (some cut it short, some bleach it to mix it, other just embrace the badger for a few months) and invariably they end up looking younger, not older. I think unless you spend ££££ on a very regular basis you can never achieve a nice glossy multi tone mane, especially if you go for brown Which always ends up looking dull.

DameDoom · 03/11/2017 18:26

Cakes they are so wrong. Grey looks fabulous and suits the skin tone as it gets a bit older. There is nothing more ageing - I should say less fresh-looking - than a head full of hair that was once dark and is now identikit blonde highlighted.

Grey rocks.

It's like wearing the best cashmere. Grey looks expensive, chic, glamorous or serious - it can be whatever you want it to be.

It looks grown up

AKAmyself · 03/11/2017 18:28

^what DameDoom said^

AKAmyself · 03/11/2017 18:29

Plus I bet you that once you do it, all your friends will be jealous!

Squashit · 03/11/2017 18:29

www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/hair-dye-use-breast-cancer-risk-increase-frequent-five-times-per-year-a8002641.html it was this study that nudged me.

A lot of my relatives have died from cancer in their forties and fifties and for me if this does contribute then I can’t go there.

I also like grey hair. 🙂

I have a colleague who dyed her hair for years after starting to go grey at 20. She is now about 40, and has her hair cut like the centre photo in the first series Era posted (the one where the model is drinking from a blue teacup,) although without the tricksy curl above her ear.

This is in the south of France, where many women try and look young long beyond the point where it's possible or advisable and where artificiality reigns, so it was quite a brave move. Although less so, perhaps, than for ordinary mortals, as my colleague is very beautiful, with huge eyes.

She looks even more beautiful now than she did with dyed hair.
And she does not look old at all.

The more women do this, the less it will be associated with age.

Nomoretears56 · 03/11/2017 18:39

DameDoom
Fanola no more yellow shampoo £20 from Amazon for a litre is amazing stuff, I decided to stop dying just under a year ago, I've been growing out the over processed blond, it's nearly all gone now, I used the Fanola twice a week and it took away the brassyness completely, now only use it once a week (normal shampoo every other day) and my silver hair shines!!

DameDoom · 03/11/2017 18:43

Absolutely Auld. We have to drive this forward. No life stage should be denigrated and the changes should be enjoyed and celebrated.I'm alive with great hair which is a lot more than my mother had.
I think we are doing this a lot on S&B although it can be roundly ridiculed by some as frivolous frippery - it isn't.

DameDoom · 03/11/2017 18:48

Thanks Nomore I shall give it a go.Using Josh Wood at the minute. It's the transitioning pain.
Grey is such a unique and special colour that no hairdresser in the world can properly emulate it during the transition.
Looking forward to seeing more great grey hair on the streets.

blueskyinmarch · 03/11/2017 18:52

I would love to be brave enough to do this. I am 55 and i have the identikit blonde highlighted bob. My DM grew out her dyed hair when she was 50 and her hair is a beautiful silver colour. I often mention it to DH and he is not at all keen on the idea. I know it is my hair but i wouldn't like to do something he detested. He has tried to grow a beard a few times and has shaved it off as i detested it. I am also a bit plump and i am not sure if i would suit a really short cut, although i had it very short all through my 20s and 30s. Torn!

I’ve been grey for about 8 years and have never regretted it. Have added pic. Bit of a mess as not styled it today as just been staying in house.

Not keen on 1 and 2 as they are dyed grey and as i said before, you can't emulate grey. No 3 however... amazing. She looks chic, intelligent, successful, a great cook, interesting - just fab. Oh and gorgeous
