Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

I'd love to do this. I've been going grey since I was 15 but now I'm approaching menopause, the top of my hair is thinning so I think I'd develop a Friar Tuck look without the colour and length.

Squashit · 01/11/2017 13:23

Perhaps the colour is causing the thinning? I have heard others having problems in this regard re hair dye.

More people should do this. Hair dye is awful shit.

BrioAmio · 01/11/2017 13:31

A lady I used to work with did this (although she had cancer so the initial shaving was forced), it went from a brunette long bob to a short grey elfin cut and took YEARS off her! It looked amazing.

PericardiumOne · 01/11/2017 15:32

I cut mine like EraAlis (I mean, like hers looks now) and love it. I've now started the long painful process of growing it into a bob, but am still SO happy I've ditched the dye.

Squashit · 01/11/2017 16:09

Thanks everyone for all the kind words and encouragement- I really appreciate it.

Well I feel so silly now. I stopped dying my hair about 6 or 7 years ago. I maintained my hair style re length and just looked awful for several/many months. This is an absolutely fabulous idea and if I hadn't been so narrow minded I would have loved that!

T00ManyB00ks · 01/11/2017 17:50

I wish i’d done this. I stopped colouring a year ago when I got pregnant and it still hasn’t totally grown out so I currently have half black half white ( literally black ends). It’s looked bloody awful! I’m not going back to monthly dye appointments so I guess I need to just crack on and cut it short!

TheLesserWeevil · 01/11/2017 17:52

mrsreynolds please post a picture if you can! I don't think I can pull off short hair (will look too much like my dad) but equally don't want a year of looking crap when I stop colouring... Am really hoping there's an alternative...

Squashit · 03/11/2017 13:17

Anymore buzzers out there with any wisdom/inspiration to offer?

Anyone got any great hair styles for grey hair when it has a whiter streak in the front but is largely salt and pepper?

Here are some of mine... well these are the styles I am gravitating towards to make the most of my hair.

ALso forgot to add- has anyone found that beige/camels still work with their grey hair or is it a definite no and should I just charity shop the lot?

Ttbb · 03/11/2017 13:45

Why don't you just dye it grey then let it grow out?

Squashit · 03/11/2017 13:57

It is my natural colour grey now and buzz cut. I did try the dyeing it grey thing but it trashed my hair and because the hair was so porous wouldn’t keep hold of the toner so went all sorts of weird colours.

Not a straight forward choice when you have been dyeing your hair dark for years and the badger is pure white in places -hence my decision.

EraArils · 03/11/2017 14:07

Beige and creams look absolutely hideous on me now. Bold colours are the way to go and black now looks brilliant. Bin the beige I say.

Are you becoming happier with you hair decision now? Mine seems to have had a growth spurt this past week.

Here are my hair inspirations. I love the first picture you chose.

I also like. Imagine the third picture with grey hair.

As for the simply dyeing hair grey, it doesn't work for everyone. I buzzed my hair because I was so tired of the constant maintenance, I have other things I want to spend my time on. Plus, like Squashit my hair became over processed and generally bloody rubbish. Buzzing my hair was on my bucket list and I don't regret doing it one bit.

Era I absolutely love the pic of your hair - it's a fabulous colour and looks so chic.
I have stopped colouring my hair and am about 60 percent silver which I love - cannot wait for the rest to catch up. If only my head wasn't rugger-ball shaped, I'd be buzzing too.

DameDoom · 03/11/2017 14:33

I look shocking in beige and camel now Squashit. Black suits me so much better as long as I have plenty of make-up on.
I use self tanner more as it seems to contrast really well with silvery hair; looked awful when I was blonde.
Have total greydar going on and it is so refreshing seeing so many women really embracing their grey and looking all the more fabulous for it.

DameDoom · 03/11/2017 14:39

I know these aren't buzzed but I still love them.

This thread is really inspiring. Those pics are great.

Mine is just starting to go grey but I’ve midlength curly hair which takes ages to grow so I think I’ll just keep away from the dye and hope it goes a nice dignified shade of grey.

Squashit · 03/11/2017 17:20

Thank- you everyone so much. I love all the pictures posted-they all look fabulous.

Era I thought as much. I do love black and navy though so will go with it and pass my stuff on for someone else to enjoy. I don’t regret shaving my hair off at all and am looking forward to seeing it in all it’s natural glory but I am not enjoying working with it this short. However that will pass and I am am putting my focus into new make-up clothes etc particularly with all the funds being available that were used for hair dye.

Dame thanks for the tip about self tanner. I have never used it before and will keep it in mind.

Coco fab hair 👍🏻

Coco you look fabulous. Very, very chic indeed.

FeedMeAndTellMeImPretty · 03/11/2017 17:37

I was close to doing this, but then I chickened out and had a regular crop, which exposed all the grey at the sides and left a black mop top so I looked like Hitler Sad It looked so odd that I ended up dying it again, so completely lost any progress I'd made (about 1 inch of white roots at the time!) Angry

It doesn't help that my DP is very much a long blonde hair man and I have a grey black pixie cut so I already feel like I'm going against what he finds attractive. He is always very kind and complimentary about it but I know he'd prefer me to have a more girly style. I just think the grey buzz cut would be a step too far. Sad

I'd do it in a heart beat if I were single. I'm slightly envious of those of you whose H is happy to help you transition to grey and give you a buzz cut into the bargain.

Cocolepew · 03/11/2017 17:38

Thanks Smile
I've bleached it again since then Grin
But I am growing it out again Hmm

Cocolepew · 03/11/2017 17:39

My mum is 75 and has a number 3 cut every 6 weeks.
