Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

I love picture number 2! I think I could handle that if it wasn’t for my sagging jowels.

SwedishEdith · 04/11/2017 17:58

Lots of these look great but high maintenance or work because the face if really good-looking so would suit any hair. I fear I'd look like this

I coloured my hair for years myself and hated how the grey stood out when it grew so decided for the first time ever to go to a salon. I’m so pleased with the results , as it grows the grey blends in so well. It made a massive difference to my confidence too.

I'm mid 40s and have had grey hair for about 5 years after cutting it really short in order to get rid of the dye. A few weeks ago I went and dyed it again because I felt dowdy and frumpy but I'm regretting it now.
Everyone has said it looks good but it just doesn't feel right. This thread is making me want to cut the dye out again! All these pictures are fabulous!

My problem with the grey hair is that it makes my yellowish teeth look even worse, I'm going to have to get them whitened aren't I?

DameDoom · 04/11/2017 18:40

That's hysterical SwedishEdith. Got to love a bit of the Si though.

Neural the money you save on colouring will more than pay for some whitening trays from the dentist.

Archiesnan your hair looks great - nice bit of transitioning I must say.

neuralpathways · 04/11/2017 19:08

Good point! Although I dye it at home so it'll take a while Grin

poppym12 · 04/11/2017 19:09

Love your hair archiesnan, it's very similar to the colour I'd like to be as it would blend with my own grey shade perfectly but I can't seem to convey it properly at my appointments and end up with not enough ash and too much gold.

What colour is it?

HoosierDaddy · 04/11/2017 19:32

I have serious hair envy- wish i cpuld pull off a pixie cut... i am 37, and I would love to be all grey or all brown - I am neither at the moment! I haven't had a colour in about 6 months and have had a couple of fairly short cuts since then. I have curly (often frizzy) hair so the colour growing out isn't as noticeable/harsh looking as when I wear it straight. I am going white/grey around the temples, but roots are still pretty dark brown. I have a feeling I just look unkempt rather than having a style. I need another cut soon, I think I will hold off on colouring for another while and see how it goes. My mum has amazing salt and pepper hair, if mine was more like that all over, I would be happy!

HoosierDaddy · 04/11/2017 19:39

Actually, my dad's colouring would be fab too, but with less unruly brows and nose hair 😂

ilovecherries · 04/11/2017 19:47

I've been following this thread with huge interest. I'm nearly 60, and have had the blonde bob in various forms for at least 20 years. I don't think I have a huge amount of grey - if I'm like mum and dad all that I will have is a white halo around my face for another 10-15 years. But I am SICK of the expensive 6 weekly upkeep, I hate the fact that it's a constant battle to keep the blonde from looking brassy and I also just have an urge to say fuckit, I'm 60, let's shake it all up. I spoke to my hairdresser about stopping the colour and she was very against it. But as I'm paying her a hundred quid every 6 weeks I'm not sure how valid her opinion is - but she insists it will age me terribly (although not sure what's wrong with that really).

What's worrying me is a very significant thining on top - I worry I will actually look bald if I have minimal hair elsewhere? Plus as a size 14 I'm not slim by any means, and I have a softness round my jaw and a sagging in the area between chin and neck that wasn't there 5 years ago. And my head does 'poke' a little, and I've always depended on my hair to cover that at the back. I'm selling myself, amn't I?

Archiesnan · 04/11/2017 20:09

poppym12 I have no idea what colour it is, I went in and asked for something that would blend well with my grey as it grows. I sat for five and a half hours and came out feeling much younger than when I went it.

EraArils · 04/11/2017 20:10

A lot of hairdressers are going to lose a few future designer handbags because of this thread. I haven't seen my hairdresser for 7 months and she has no idea i've shaved my head. I used to visit every 6 weeks like clockwork. She's now lost about £400 this year because of my decision.

woodhill · 04/11/2017 20:12

So sick of colouring. When I was shopping I saw an old lady with straggly dyed hair with white roots and very thin hair. I don't think I want to do it for much longer.

I'm probably 80% grey, would love to go to a remote island and let it grow out.

Cocolepew · 04/11/2017 20:20

It's a myth that you have to be slim to pull off a pixie cut.
I look like a hamster storing food and I'm gorgeous Grin

Cocolepew · 04/11/2017 20:21

Pinterest is great for grey hair pics. Loads of transition photos too.

HoosierDaddy · 04/11/2017 20:25

coco my face is very round, and hair is very curly- so I think I would look like a saucepan scourer

I don't think I have ever seen a curly pixie - or whatever the curly equivalent is called

Cocolepew · 04/11/2017 21:58

Hoosier 😂

Cocolepew · 04/11/2017 22:00

These are the first ones on Pinterest for curly pixie cut

Love those wavy hair pixie pics. I think that wavy hair can be perfect for pixies as you can get that nicely dishevelled look going on.

I think it goes without saying that hairdressers have a less than neutral interest in how they approach someone thinking of giving up colouring - it is their bread and butter. It is not unheard of for people to spend £120 + on their highlights etc every 4-6 weeks. That is a hell of a lot of money over the course of a year

I also wanted to add that it is rare the person who doesn’t look better with their natural hair colour. I think having spoken to others that it isn’t the grey that is putting them off but the awkwardness of the transitioning period.

I would definitely do it but I had my last child in my 40s and I don't want draw attention to my age for his sake as all the other mums are late 20s early 30s.

HoosierDaddy · 04/11/2017 22:47

Those pics are fab, but my face is this shape ---- Smile
Those ladies have defined features

Right, so I will focus on losing 2 stone off my face. During that time, my hair will grow out to elbow length. I will then get fancy curly crop. I am on it!

Horsemad · 04/11/2017 23:15

I reckon I'd look like the lady in the 3rd picture in EraArils' post today at 13.35. My grey roots are exactly that colour.

She looks lovely but it's a step too far for me at the moment Shock

Squashit · 05/11/2017 10:04

Can anyone recommend some good shampoos etc to keep it in good condition and stop discloration etc.?

OP posts:
Cocolepew · 05/11/2017 10:45

I haven't used this but Fanola no yellow shampoo is supposed to be very good. Its on Amazon.

CheekyFatSquirrel · 05/11/2017 11:11

I have a short pixie cut, have had it for years and I have a round face, but been told it suits me. It is all my natural colour now, got sick of dyeing it. As it is so short, it only took a few months to grow out, its more salt and pepper but more white around the sides and front. I look like my mother sometimes in the mirror but I am getting old, so what! Smile
