Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

Fanola no more yellow is brilliant for keeping the grey from yellowing, I use it once a week (normal shampoo every other day), Just make sure to scrub your hands well after use or your nails will stain purple!!

EraArils · 05/11/2017 12:01

I used toning shampoo when my hair was bleached. I haven't used it now my hair is pure grey, should I? I haven't noticed any yellowing yet. I do have tonnes of different toning shampoo left over though.

Nomoretears56 · 05/11/2017 12:04

Would the toning shampoo add colour?

Cocolepew · 05/11/2017 15:05

A toner can brighten up the grey or if you leave it on longer it will temporarily colour it.

Squashit · 05/11/2017 20:26

Thank-you for the advice 🙂

You buzzed ladies are looking great!

I got a longer pixi (if there is such a thing) at the beginning of the year to help my grey transition. I hated it short so am growing the length and grey now! Luckily the craziness of a pixi grow out stops there being such a strong demarcation line.

I love the mix of pure white, silver and steel at the front. I'm less keen on the salt and pepper at the back. My natural "pepper" is a boring ashy brown and doesn't look great with the sparkles. It just seems a bit underwhelming.

My dyed hair was a lovely rich conker colour I would get loads of compliments on. Full on silver/white/grey hair is a statement.

I'm past the "she needs to do her roots" stage and I'm not planning on dying it so I'll just have to accept it but ...

I'm 37 and started greying at 16.

FlorenceLyons · 05/11/2017 22:45

I'm loving this thread. So many inspiring pictures and stories.

I have a pixie cut with a fair amount of grey creeping in at the sides and front. I'd been having a semi-permanent colour (warm brown) done every couple of months, but stopped a few months ago. It was starting to look a bit flat, and to go a bit orangey when it needed doing again.

My natural colour is a fairly dull brown. I miss the warmth of the dyed colour, but am actually quite liking the effect of the silvery threads!

Squashit · 05/11/2017 23:17

More grey hair inspiration. Feeling much more upbeat. Sorted through clothes, make-up etc and am going for a capsule knowing black, white, grey and navy look really nice with my natural hair. Also my chunky silver jewellery. It has already grown so much and is a lot lighter than I thought it was going to be. Red lipstick looks perfect too. Makes getting dressed much easier.

Loving this undercut too

Love the undercut picture. Squashit we should so do an update on this thread in intervals.

My hair is starting to stick out in random places and I like it. It looks a bit like it will go the way of Melissa McBride's hair.

I love wearing red lipstick but I do love the idea of a chunky silver necklace. Any suggestions?
I might keep my eye out for a true winter white colour top too. Usually wear darker colours near my face.

I'd like to be brave enough to do this.

But I'm overweight with a short fat neck and a round face. And when I say overweight I am a size 20. With yellow teeth due to my mum taking tetracycline when pg with me so even whitening doesn't do much. I would need veneers. Have the ubiquitous bond bob at the moment. And thinning hair. Although interested to read that dying it can make it thin more.

Some of the photos are amazing.

blueskyinmarch · 06/11/2017 11:34

Here is a picture of my current colour and style. I think I would like to keep the bob but have it grey. What do you think?

BamBambino · 06/11/2017 13:05

I think it would look great bluesky

Squashit · 06/11/2017 13:18

bluesky I think it would easy for you to try and see if you like it and if you don’t then return to blonde.

I think these hairstyles could suit you and would work with your hair type/grey.

Loving the bravery ladies. For anyone not so brave, what I did was get some blond highlights to transition my longer hair. It worked really well and I now have longer grey hair without the buzz cut.

Squashit · 06/11/2017 13:36

My hair is growing like a weed. It already feels a lot thicker too.

Buzzcutting is hard work and won’t be for everyone but there is something to be said for going with a clean slate if you can. You certainly don’t have the optical illusion of thinning hair when the badger emerges (if you dye it dark) to contend with. It is free too.

Whatever works has got to be a good thing.

Here’s a fuzz head update for those who are curious.

This is how dark it was dyed before and this is the badger that emerged five days after dyeing that I routinely had to contend with.

So glad that is done with 🙂

I think it's great that women are saying it's okay to be grey. I started the grey process a year ago and had my hair cut short. I struggled a bit with the transition, and many hats were worn throughout the winter...one at a time obviously. I will never go back to the dye, but oh! has it divided opinion. 'But you'll look OLD!' Well did the hair dye make me look 28 again? No it did not....so I don't regret the decision at all. My hairdresser's fallen by the wayside though. Very much against the idea - not surprisingly given the loss of income. Afraid I've done a runner and am going elsewhere...clean slate and all that!

CiderwithBuda · 06/11/2017 15:01

I was mousey brown originally but have dyed my hair for years and years. Wouldn't recognise my natural colour.

I have gradually gone lighter and lighter over the last couple of years. Which helps hugely with the regrowth.

I've had a look at some pics on Pinterest on blending grey and might try that gradually. And stick to my textured bob. Much as I would love to be brave enough to go for a buzz cut.

RockinRobinTweets · 06/11/2017 15:14

I love this for short hair

I love this thread! Squashit I reckon it won't take long for you to notice a good bit of regrowth, if DH's hair is anything to go by after it has been clippered. It will be fab- I love the wee bit of colour we can see already.

OpheIiaBaIIs · 06/11/2017 19:56

I'd so love to do this. In fact I almost did, about five/six years ago - I laid off the dark brown dye for almost a year. But DH absolutely hated it, so I gave in and dyed it red (to be fair I did think that maybe I was a little young then at 39).

Now I'm 45 and my roots are practically 100% white. I'm dying it dark brown every 3-4 weeks and in between using root powders to cover the white which shows after about 5 days. My hair is also thinner than it used to be and it looks really obvious with the roots - another reason I use the powders, which make my hair feel dirty and leave blackish smears on my pillows. If I scratch my head, my nails are filthy.

DH is even more vehemently against me quitting the dye now than he was in the past. He's a lot younger than me (12 years) so that may well be a factor. I told him I'd stop dyeing my hair when he lost his - he's already thinning and he has a bit of grey (which of course he has no intention of dyeing!). I figured that would be fine, considering we'd look 'mature' together! But nope. He ain't having it.

My hair's kind of like Nigella's, just past the shoulders and wavy. He'd like it to be arse length but that's one thing I'm not budging on Grin

All you grey ladies look absolutely gorgeous. I'm envious!

WobblyLondoner · 06/11/2017 20:35

Good for you!!

I've just spent a year growing out my colour - I think I'm 2 cuts off being totally grey. I did think about going short at the start (I've got a chin length bob type of thing) but couldn't cope with the idea of grey plus a cut that I know from past experience isn't that flattering.

No regrets at all about going grey though. I think it's more flattering than the brassy colour I always ended up with after a few weeks.

Keep us posted!
