Our old thread

Welcome to our new lovely, friendly thread for perfume lovers. All are most welcome to drop in and chat, whether dabbling in scent for the first time or as full-blown fragrance junkies.

Tell us your Scent of the Day, or latest discovery, or ask a question - because one of us is almost bound to know the answer.

Morning perfume goddesses! SOTD is Une Rose Chypree. I love the sparkly citrus top notes of this, and now it's settling down to a cosy, powdery rose, yum. I fear I might have oversprayed though; this is quite a powerful scent with good sillage and my nose is still a bit broken. Apologies to anyone in my train carriage this morning.

Am also low-carb bootcamping but am not going to desert this thread for that one, cos this one is lovely and that one is scary Wink

MaryLennoxsScowl · 09/10/2017 07:46

Oh goodness, I've been away for a few days and the thread has moved on! I took some samples away with me and the most successful was Le Labo Vetiver - sexy and masculine, which I like on me but want to try on DH. Le Labo do a nice discovery sample set too and I liked four out of five, if anyone needs tempting for stocking fillers or advent calendars!

Thanks for linking me to the Harry Potter chat! I don't know what je reviens smells like, but I think professor mcgonagall would wear Chanel no 19 or vintage Y - something a bit austere but with depths! And umbridge would have picked a cutesy bottle with no regard for the smell - something cat shaped or those Anna Sui butterfly pink mingers everyone had when I was a student. I agree with whoever put Sirius in Tom Ford, and said Harry would be in lynx!

I was catching up on this thread last night and had to get out of bed to put on some midnight in the palace garden - I hadn't been mad on those samples and felt they were very samey except for Dirty Honey and Maxed Out - and I liked it a lot! My experience of 4160s is that my views on them change all the time and ones I disliked start to smell amazing and ones I liked I go meh about.

Oncewaswho · 09/10/2017 08:11

PerfumeIsAMessage - thanks for the Perfume Parlour tip, I didn't actually buy any of the Jo Malones because I was a bit "how much?!" for colognes, so I'll check that out.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 09/10/2017 08:24

Cuir Cordoba today. Probably my first love after venturing onto these threads a year or so back. This is the one described by someone (Scented Hound possibly) as the inside of a lady's glove.

I read the first Cazalet book a year or so back, but they all irritated me and I didn't progress. Shame if they mention scent!

boldlygoingsomewhere · 09/10/2017 08:43

Kittens, I've done the bootcamp before and struggled to keep up with the chat. The threads are very fast moving. I'm going to follow along from a distance this time.

SOTD is Shazam. Felt like I needed something warming this morning.

BluebellGal · 09/10/2017 09:21

Ooh that sounds lovely kittens I bet everyone on the train enjoyed it too Wink I agree about overspraying observations up thread- it’s more likely to happen when you have a signature scent.

Regarding signature scents- that’s what led me down the perfumista path. I was constantly looking for ‘the one’. the holy grail of a perfume that I loved the smell of, which had excellent longevity at a non eye-watering price. I’m no longer looking for that signature scent and it’s liberating! I rarely buy FB these days.

SOTD is Shay and Blue Framboise Noire. A dark woody fruity gourmand - it’s gorgeous and I’m enjoying it very much

explodingkittens · 09/10/2017 09:35

Yes, the whole 'signature scent' thing is really interesting. There was a thread a while back about it that got quite heated iirc! Someone equated having a SS to bring discerning whereas those of us who liked to chop and change were promiscuous flibbertigibbets who couldn't be trusted Wink

I now tend to think of a SS as wearing the same clothes or eating the same food every day. I might have favourites that I return to but the thought of restricting myself to the same thing day in day out is, well, now unthinkable!

It's odd how its caught on as a marketing concept though. I can't think of any other consumer item that inspires such fierce loyalty as perfume.

explodingkittens · 09/10/2017 13:29

Mmm, Chypree has dried down into a lovely musky, slightly animalic rose now, kinda like a more floral L'air de rien. I could sniff this all day.

OnTheSherry · 09/10/2017 13:55

Afternoon fragrant ones.

I'm off sick today, which is unheard of for me. Woke up with migraine, which has thankfully disappeared. Look and feel like I've been dragged through a hedge, though.

Une Rose Chypree sounds lovely, kittens.

Inspired by all the 4160 chat, I think I'm going to have a bath and then a dig through my samples...

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 09/10/2017 16:35

I feel I am running to catch up with so much chat! It’s lovely though to see so much Perfume enthusiasm, especially compared with the SNAFU the rest of MN seems to be becoming. Sigh.

In case you can’t tell Grin I am extremely bloody grumpy and fed up (SOTD Shalimar, for extreme cosiness and cheering up abilities). Talking of cosiness, my favourite (although I haven’t tried them all) 4160s are (currently at least Wink)Sleep Knot and Babylon Sunset, but I do love Ealing Green, very surprising to me as I’m not normally a green fan, but goodness me, it’s gorgeous. It’s just wow.

Also second (sorry, app on teeny phone screen won’t let me find names easily Blush) the Perfume Parlour for Jo Malones - the real ones last about 5 seconds on me (so about £200 per second Hmm) but the PP, whilst not exact matches, have much better longevity - I really liked PP Pomegranate Noir.

I have never been able to get into the Cazalets either, funnily enough and usually love that sort of family saga type book. Nor can I get on with Harry Potter despite one of the DCs being very HP obsessed - I actually do feel like I have read them all myself many times Wink

Judy apologies if I have missed it, but how did your DH’s interview go? I think lots of us empathise with him/you and know how terrible the job market is, especially in particularly recession affected industries. I managed to ride out the worst of it in one such industry, then lost my job anyway when I became ill - oh the irony! Sending good vibes for you both, and indeed any Perfumistas affected by crap jobs/illness/dentist woes/full credit cards and empty perfume boxes Wink Flowers And nice to see newbies being sucked in and enabled here too Smile

MrsPestilence · 09/10/2017 18:39

Aldi have perfumes: Little Secret, smells of very little, Heavenly, blue and gentle (I bought this one last year), and Pure Flowers, not smelt it. £3.99 for 75ml
They are not going to win any prizes, but if you budget is four quid for a work perfume, they are OK.

SoTD Mad Madame JHaG again. It was lasting well, then I cooked dinner. Now I smell of lovage Blush

Judydreamsofhorses · 09/10/2017 18:46

SOTD is Chanel 19. I am so tired after 9-5 classes!

floofy thanks for your good wishes - the interview is tomorrow at 1pm. Please do send good vibes! I am sure my teeth would settle down if things at home could get back on an even keel - I was never a grinder until about nine months ago. That was the point when the JSA stopped which made things really difficult. It made very little difference money-wise, but it at least meant he had "his" money to pay for things like toiletries, buy a coffee and so on. (We are not the Mumsnet norm in that we - shock - don't have a joint account and have always just split bills then had our own money to play with.)

Badders08 · 09/10/2017 18:49

I bought 2 liquid handsiaps from Primark today...amber noir and rose oud
Smell divine
Went to John Lewis. Sashayed up to the guerlain counter a s said a bright "morning!" And was pretty much ignored 🤔😡
Did manage to sniff l heure bleue finally!! and didn't like it
I'm obv just not a guerlain girl 😔 except mitsuoko

MrsPestilence · 09/10/2017 18:59

Lovage perfumes, leaving them here so as not to lose them
Eau de Parfum GPS 23’ 34”N
Skarb
Sel de Vetiver
Viridian
and Gunpowder Rose which I already have a sample of and thought smelt strangely of ME Grin

MrsPestilence · 09/10/2017 19:03

Good luck Judy's DH

Badders don't mention Mitsouko and soap in the same post. Last week I wore Mitsouko and smelt like I was carrying a sack of Pears Soap around. Hoping it was a one off Sad You obviously did not look like a PM wearer.

Badders08 · 09/10/2017 19:15

😁
I do find guerlains oddly soapy!!!
Still not loving the lush perfumes either 😔

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 09/10/2017 19:40

Evening all! Tried out a nice smelling soap and glory shower wash from a birthday hamper this morning - lovely and almondy so SOTD was PP Mandorlo Sicilie (or whatever their fakey name is) to jeep the smell going. Mmm.

And three Guerlain samples arrived- hooray!!! Was very disciplined and haven't sprayed yet. Will wait so as to ensure they're not diluted by today's choice! That's a bit rubbish about the counter though Badders. It does sound as though you need to look like a Mon Guerlain type (whatever that might be. Oh God... I hope I haven't gone into OL territory now.....!) Anyway, I've got some Jicky, Mitsouko and L'Heure Bleue and with any luck I'll hate them all and be one step closer to getting off the Bee Bottle obsession cycle.

(Who am I kidding? Shalimar will always be lovely)

Will be thinking of you and your DH tomorrow Judy - crosses fingers and does good luck dance

Badders08 · 09/10/2017 19:44

Oooh i bet you love mitsuoko. Sorry! 😁
I shall keep everything crossed tomorrow just 🤞

Badders08 · 09/10/2017 19:46

Haven't smelt jicky but I found LHB to be very violetty and a bit almondy which is my perfume kryptonite
The guerlain lady at my normal haunt always gives me samples and is very nice.
Humpf

Judydreamsofhorses · 09/10/2017 19:48

mrsmacnally I missed your post earlier. I actually did a whole lesson on perfume marketing last academic year (personal brand going strong!). The youth/sleb market is by far the most buoyant segment in scent terms, even if they are selling in Savers for a tenner, but you're right, the choice of sleb and the pink minger-ness are absolutely key. It's also a fickle field, as the slebs go in and out of fashion like you wouldn't believe. I think it was 2008/9 that Jade Goody's fragrance was the best seller for two years running - she was a bit of a poor man's Prinny Di. I am astonished by what the girls I teach are influenced by in terms of celebrity endorsement, and anything marketed on Instagram seems to really get under their skins, even stupid things like detox teas. My students are mainly 18 - 21-ish, so I expect them to be a bit more savvy in terms of people from Geordie Shore using teeth whitening products and so on...

Judydreamsofhorses · 09/10/2017 19:49

Oh, and thank you all for positive vibes. Light candles and chant at 1pm tomorrow, pls.

Judydreamsofhorses · 09/10/2017 19:51

Sorry, me again - I also managed to shoehorn "the lipstick effect" into a class on changing market forces a few weeks ago. Quite proud of that one, tbh.

Badders08 · 09/10/2017 19:52

Just?? judy

Badders08 · 09/10/2017 19:55

PMs seem to be what sell sadly
Whoever Zoella is must be doing a roaring trade 💳💷

MrsPestilence · 09/10/2017 20:11

Zoella is a Vblogger, she has a line in perfumes (sweet) that don't have many reviews on fragrantica. Once you look, she is everywhere. Judy, if she were your ex-student you would be proud.
