Judy, excuse my ignorance but what is the lipstick effect? I've never heard of it! Hope all goes well for dh tomorrow, will be keeping everything crossed for you both.

URC has now faded to a beautiful, vague rosy skin scent, with a hint of violet. This really is a grower, love it.

MrsPestilence · 09/10/2017 20:26

Kittens when the going get tough you can't afford a shiny new stainless steel fridge freezer or exotic holiday but you can afford a luxury lipstick /perfume. Thus you persuade yourself that you are not poor or deprived.

Judydreamsofhorses · 09/10/2017 20:28

kittens, it's essentially the idea that we treat ourselves to small, posh pick-me-ups in times of economic woe, so sales of things like Chanel lipsticks go up because we still want something nice, but can't afford a Mulberry bag (ha, like that will never happen here). It is an actual thing - my students thought I had made it up!

BluebellGal · 09/10/2017 20:34

Good luck to Judy’s DH sending good vibes.

explodingkittens · 09/10/2017 20:35

Oh that's great, can't believe I've never heard of that before! You learn something new every day...

BluebellGal · 09/10/2017 20:40

Yep the lipstick effect is a proper economic term and not just about lipsticks Grin

BluebellGal · 09/10/2017 20:41

I’m liking the sound of Guerlain LHB, I’m going to have to seek it out. Sadly not available in my local department stores

MrsPestilence · 09/10/2017 20:46

Bluebell as PP sometimes Guerlain keep bottles of the old classics in a drawer and you have to ask Hmm

littlechou · 09/10/2017 20:59

Hello lovely perfumistas. I often dip in and out of your fragrant threads (in various usernames).
I got a load of 4160 samples after seeing all your recommendations and I LOVED pillow talk and Mrs Gloss made me do it. Delicious!

SOTD for me was Laurent Mazzone - sensual orchid (ahem, it’s Beyoncé’s SS apparently) and I can still smell it now it’s lovely...

A new one that has really got me interested is Mugler’s Aura. Wow, it’s so different. I can’t put my finger on it but I need a decent sample to see if I love it as much as I think I do! Has anyone got any thoughts on it?

Oh, and just for a larf I popped into a Tom Ford store to smell their new ‘Fucking Fabulous’. Waiting list for months apparently, and completely underwhelming (actually reminded me of Armani he/she range and therefore my first boyfriend also underwhelming)

BluebellGal · 09/10/2017 21:04

Thanks Pest I’ll ask about hidden Guerlains when I pop in next. Are they like contraband? I’m confused why they would be hidden! Shalimar is out on display, I wonder why that one is acceptable? Love a bit of Shalimar me and often have a spray when I go past but never owned a bottle.

I’m getting my Look Fantastic advent calendar tomorrow. I purchased it because I’m looking to try some new products, rather than as an advent calendar, so have decided to open it all tomorrow. It looks pretty good value for money and I’m already planning on gifting some of the things I won’t use to family/friends. But another reason I purchased this one is to store all my perfume samples in. It looks gorgeous and is the perfect size.

I think I’m going to get the M&S one as an actual advent calendar and have been resisting the urge to look as don’t want to spoil the surprise.

ivykaty44 · 09/10/2017 21:17

Anyone use Miller Harris?

MrsPestilence · 09/10/2017 21:27

Welcome back Little, in the last thread PiaM said "Aura is very odd. Almost fascinating in its oddness. Toothpaste and spice." So probably a love it or hate it one.
I think 'Fucking Fabulous' referred to the publicity stunt, not the quality of the perfume.

Not me Ivy, but I know some of the others do.

OnTheSherry · 09/10/2017 21:31

I'd also never heard of The Lipstick Effect. So now this thread is educational, too. Its the thread that just keeps on giving Grin

YY to many Guerlain counters keeping the oldies in drawers. I got a genuinely puzzled look at an airport Guerlain counter once when I asked to try Mitsouko. The woman raised her eyebrows in a sort of 'are you sure?' manner. Probably gutted I didn't want any part in her Idylle-spraying nonsense.

Welcome, littlechou. I haven't tried Aura as I don't have much luck with Mugler perfumes, but it seems to get really divided reviews. Some say its a lovely, slightly fizzy, sour rhubarb. Others say its weirdly medicinal smelling. I'd say based on reviews its definitely one to try a few times before you buy (although feel free to ignore me, as I am a habitual blind-buyer Grin).

Bluebell, I am so jealous of your LF Advent Calendar. I am too skint to indulge this year, so am ill fully ignoring the advent calendar threads in Style & Beauty. But the LF one is supposed to be excellent quality for the price...so enjoy (and let us know what goodies you get in it!).

I'm in the last few squirts of my Tart's Knicker Drawer sample tonight. Lovely stuff.

littlechou · 09/10/2017 21:31

Toothpaste and spice.... couldn’t have put it better myself! Grin

OnTheSherry · 09/10/2017 21:34

Fucking Fabulous...you just knew it was going to be underwhelming

I really dislike Tom Ford for previously completely irrational reasons, but now I have my reason!

littlechou · 09/10/2017 21:50

Aura is medicinal in a deep heat kind of way... I’m fascinated by it!

I will admit to loving Champaca Absolute, Noir de Noir and Tuscan Leather from the TF Range though Blush

MrsMacNally · 09/10/2017 21:54

Yes, sometimes Ivykate. Do you have one in mind?

Thanks Judy - but wow on that market share....

I quite liked it on first sniff Littlechou but need to try again...

OTS - that puts me in the mood for the 4160s crowd-sourced rhubarb project which I think should be out quite soon.

Still puzzling why someone responsible for both A Single Man, and Sahara Noir, would think FF was such a good idea?

explodingkittens · 09/10/2017 21:56

I have £40 of notino samples in my basket, including Shalimar, Mitsouko, Aromatics Elixir and Arpege. Tell me why I really, really shouldn't press the 'buy' button... Grin

MrsPestilence · 09/10/2017 21:57

TL ringer for £30. Big thyme opening and then to leather and raspberry. I have a FB

MrsPestilence · 09/10/2017 21:59

EK is that a whole advent calendar of samples?

OnTheSherry · 09/10/2017 22:00

kittens. I do this at least once a week but am getting better at not hitting the 'buy' button. Have you been partaking in wine at all this evening? Grin If yes, revisit your basket in the morning. If you're just sipping a cuppa and are in full possession of your wits, then by all means get your credit card out Grin

OCSockOrphanage · 09/10/2017 22:01

All good wishes and a fair wind to Judy's DH for his interview tomorrow. Favourite scent, lucky tie and all those things to make it turn out right, and finger crossed. Wishing him well.

explodingkittens · 09/10/2017 22:01

ivykate, I'm very, very fond of L'air de rien from MH. Enjoyed Cassis en Feuille, and was underwhelmed by Rose en Noir when I tried it, but should probably give it another whirl as I do usually like rose scents. I think they are rather expensive for what they are though.

OnTheSherry · 09/10/2017 22:02

Yes, good luck Judy's DH. I'll light a (virtual )candle for ye, as my old Irish granny used to say. Possibly a scented candle Wink.

explodingkittens · 09/10/2017 22:13

Pretty much, MrsPest!

Entirely sober sherry, entirely! I think you need an enabler badge Grin

Actually, was just thinking about this, so far I've not repurchased any fave samples - how often do you all repurchase? Do you get bigger samples (or decants?) once you know you like something? Or just go for a FB?
