They still have Dark Heart of Havana up as scent of the week MrsM

Better start getting organised for this testy thing

MrsMacNally · 20/10/2017 21:37

What would you like Pest: 3 x roses or 3 x orientals or 3 x woods?

MrsPestilence · 20/10/2017 22:21

I'd like a surprise MrsM
Mainly because my head is now reeling from where a floral wood becomes a woody floral or a woody oriental with flowers. Confused

explodingkittens · 21/10/2017 05:25

Mrs, yes and he compared it to Peter O'Toole well past his best Grin

Am at duty free at the channel tunnel terminal; its perfume range is surprisingly comprehensive. I have indulged, I'm afraid. 100mls of Aromatics in White plus body lotion for the bargainous price of £29.99 was just too tempting to resist. Plus I really love the cool simplicity of the bottle shallow.

I don't think I've ever sniffed any Sisley, but Eau De Campagne sounds lovely, bluebell.

Hope everyone has a lovely, scented weekend!

explodingkittens · 21/10/2017 07:04

4160s half price SOTW is Paris 1948 btw

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 21/10/2017 08:40

Happy half term to those of us who have a half term this week Smile

I an really looking forward to hearing about the blind swaps, it sounds like it’s going to be very interesting. Is it sad that I imagine you all wearing lab coats and possibly blindfolds, while you sniff? You have actually given me a great idea of putting some “blinds” in my advent calendars (and revealing what they were the following day, or something).

Judy I hope your teeth woes resolve, teeth are little fuckers, aren’t they?! and good vibes for your DH, in another spooky coincidence my DH has a second interview next week but we are dubious...we will see.

Sorry not to engage properly with all the chat even though I am reading, am still under the weather to the point where I’m not even wearing perfume Shock (this is even worse for me than the not being to able to breathe, or eat, or move without pain Hmm) DH is patiently holding teeny samples, which have arrived for advent calendars, (or from kind people called Green Wink) under my nose for a few seconds a day so I can get my fix. That sounds very sad when I type it Blush

God, I only actually posted to say we use a lot of pipettes in our house for medical stuff and King Scientific Pasteur Pipettes are cheap and widely available on Amazon. I like them as they don’t seem to grab air like some, and you can see exactly how much you’re getting. They do different sizes too.

Hope everyones’ woes (teeth, jobs, health, disappointing samples etc) resolve swiftly and we all have a lovely scented weekend.

Cake & Flowers for Floof

Happy holidays to everyone - one more week 'til half-term here.

Perfume always best smelt with eyes closed Smile. Not sure about white coat though... Have just found a Zoe Karssen sweatshirt in TKMaxx clearance with the slogan 'eau yeah'. So I suspect I will be wearing that Grin. Just as well I already have some Paris 1948...
Bluebell & Pest - pm me and let me know where you want your secret sniffy parcels sending...

OCSockOrphanage · 21/10/2017 15:56

Half term, and Storm Bryan has nixed the DoE Gold expedition. Weather atrocious. Chergui.

CountFosco · 21/10/2017 18:37

Newbie here. Been thinking about perfume and how I've never really got into it despite seeing how it could be a great pleasure in the same way as wine is. But with a few exceptions that are really not very sophisticated I found it difficult to find anything I liked and could never understand how someone had a SS when bottles lasted so long! But your threads are eyeopeners, I've now ordered some sample packs (the A.C. Discovery set to use as an advent calender and one from 4160 - Fresh Outdoors) and am looking forward to trying out different scents.

SoTD a very unsophisticated Bluebell by Yardley, sprayed on in Boots this afternoon, major whiff of EtOH initially but now smelling like Blundell more or less.

CountFosco · 21/10/2017 18:40

Bluebell that should say. Not sure what Blundell smells like Hmm

BluebellGal · 21/10/2017 19:03

I will PM you both my address mrsm and piam

SOTD was ELdO Jasmine et Cigarette because it was waiting for me when I got home last night. OMG Shock I thought I hadn’t washed my hands properly after changing my child’s soiled nappy. But I was running late for ballet so no time to scrub. It’s the Jasmine isn’t it? Very indolic. It got better and I’ve worn in all day appreciating the gorgeous white flowers and Tabacco which is an interesting and rather genius combination. But I can still smell L’eau d Pooh and I don’t know how I feel about that. Having a small child, I’m not so grossed out by the smell these days but I’m still not sure about it in perfume. I felt a bit self conscious at ballet!

Welcome CountFosco you will have fun exploring those samples even if you don’t like them all you will learn what notes you do/don’t like. Stick around here too long though and you’ll need to freeze your credit card, this thread is full of enablers! I like Yardley too especially April Violets. They do some classic soliflors

Judydreamsofhorses · 21/10/2017 19:20

SOTD is MMM Fireplace after a massive bath with my new book. Now we’re at the October holidays the flannelette linen is on the bed, and I am watching Strictly in my pyjamas. Lovely.

Floofy you poor thing. When is your DH’s interview?

Hello, count.

bluebell I had a full bottle of J&C but ended up selling it because I just didn’t love it.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 21/10/2017 19:29

Brilliant news Judy and Floof. Something went very well at stage 1 so here's hoping all goes well at stage 2!

Mmm the Miss Dior is pretty good! Like the PP version but not so musty. Still getting decent smell on it now having sprayed this morning so I'm very pleased. I knew eBay would be dangerous!!

Looking forward to hearing about the blind testing too. From an excitement point of view I don't know how you'll manage to keep quiet. From a technical point of view very interested to hear how you actually decent. Literally have no clue...

MrsMacNally · 21/10/2017 19:49

Welcome Count - I was taught by a teacher called Mrs Blundell - pretty sure she smelled of Rive Gauche Grin. SotD (and in a similar vein, is Timeless (on my left), and Elusive (on my right).

Sorry to hear about DoE plans foiled OC. They're all action the junior Socks aren't they?

Intrigued Bluebell...

MrsPestilence · 21/10/2017 20:17

PMed you Blue and MrsM
Blue PM me and not PiaM, she will feel obliged to send you something.

SoTD was agent Provocateur, just because I was in the mood.

Cheap from a technical point of view. I know the top comes off one of the bottles, so will use straw or pipette. Others a clean funnel and spray until my fingers are bored.

Welcome Count samples are the way to go Wink

BluebellGal · 21/10/2017 21:12

I’ve PMd you both Pest and MrsM not PIAM! Sorry just so tired, wish I had half term next week

MrsM did you say you’re intrigued by the ELdO Jasmine et Cigarette? If so, I can send it to you. Realistically I’m not going to wear it again. But it’s a really interesting one to try!

Re: decanting - I couldn’t get the tops off my bottles, they are clamped on. So after consulting Google I tried spray decanting (you can use a funnel but I didn’t. It was easy and I didn’t make a mess or waste any.

MrsPestilence · 21/10/2017 21:17

So decanted one with straw, no mess. Another by spraying into funnel, I have aromatic fingers but not really any mess/wastage.
Now torn for sample 3, two options, one will suit Blue the other MrsM, will sleep on it.

Do either of you want the Silk Lace and Chocolate sample? Or the Lady Rose Lion?

Sadly no lab coat, think the last one went to the charity shop earlier this year.

GreenPolishToGo · 21/10/2017 21:48

Floofy I'm really sorry you're having such a rotten time. I do hope you're feeling better soon. Flowers Fingers crossed both for your DH's interview and Judy's DP's interview. I think both of you could do with some happy news.

Sock I hope mini-Sock, who is truly intrepid, is not too disappointed at the postponement. My DD reckoned DoE Bronze nearly polished her off. Gold must be seriously hard work.

Welcome Count Fosco Smile - The Woman in White is one of my favourite Victorian novels. It sounds like you've been well and truly bitten by the perfume bug, which I think is better than wine because there's no calories and no hangover. Do let us know how you get on with your samples.

Bluebell you are really are pretty near a scent twin of mine because I have a lot of trouble with jasmine notes too. The worst I've encountered was Lush's Lust. It's described as a "sexy jasmine perfume' but to me it smelt like the worst bad breath I've ever encountered. It was truly stomach-turning.

SOTD was vintage Y after a decant failure with a Travalo - I wasn't going to waste it! That's the second vintage bottle that's proved incompatible with a Travalo so they aren't quite as fool-proof as I thought they were going to be. Oh well, it means that although it's cold and rainy outside my wrists and scarf smell of a warm summer evening in the garden so I can't complain.

OP posts:
MrsMacNally · 21/10/2017 22:53

Yes please to Lady Rose Lion Pest - what can I swap you for it, or would you like mystery 4th option?

Yes please to J&C Bluebell -again, anything you'd like to swap it for, or shall I include a surprise 4th sample?

You have me worried now my on-board skankometer is not very sensitive. I never pick up anything in Femme etc . Takes a belt of cumin to spell out dirty to me!

boldlygoingsomewhere · 22/10/2017 10:18

I really like jasmine but I also hated Lust from Lush - it did not smell like a nice Jasmine to me. Jasmine et Cigarette I do like a lot. Smile

Top notes generally fade very quickly on me. I wonder if that tones down the jasmine on me?

SOTD is Musc Ravageur.

BorisTrumpsLair · 22/10/2017 10:39

I'm also in love with Apples and Pears ATM.

Can't wait to get the new 4160 Rhubarb and Custard scents - soon! I wasn't going to buy this round on Indigogo, but I called into the studio to pick something up, had a preview sniff of them and wow! I'm in!! Ordered a bottle of each.

OCSockOrphanage · 22/10/2017 11:10

Anyone else been reading the Sunday Times? There's a new perfume company in town called Floral Street getting a big media promotion but nothing serious being said about the juices, other than that they are going to cost £55 for 50ml and will smell expensive. Going into one of the big London counters (HN, Liberty?) for a soft launch in mid November.

SoTD: dries van Noten, again.

explodingkittens · 22/10/2017 11:52

Morning all! Just crossed the border into Spain, it's bright and warm after a very rainy drive through France yesterday. SOTD is Dior Addict which suited the weather this morning but now feels a bit too cosy tbh. Left the Aromatics in the car last night so forgot to put it on this morning but will definitely give it a whirl this evening.

Agree about indolic jasmine - I find it really difficult to love. Don't mind a light jasmine note but when it starts to get a bit meaty and thick, almost rotting, I just feel nauseated. A really heavy jasmine/tuberose is probably my idea of perfume hell.

CountFosco · 22/10/2017 11:54

Welcome Count Fosco Smile - The Woman in White is one of my favourite Victorian novels.

You are the first person to recognise my username, either that or people chose to ignore they are talking to a criminal mastermind Grin. I wanted to be Marian Halcombe (don't we all) but the name had already been used.

Really looking forward to the 4160 samples in particular. Rhubarb and custard sounds good but I'd love rhubarb and ginger even more. Maybe someone should make perfumes inspired by great British jams, gooseberry and elderflower would be lovely.

Found an old sample of Lancome Miracle so wearing that today. Like the touch of spiciness in this.

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 22/10/2017 13:45

Where do you guys do your decanting? The logical place for me was over the bathroom sink, which worked well until I dropped a brand new bottle of No.5 EP and it smashed Now I tend to get DH to do it over a towel on the bed so I limit the damage from clumsiness.

Sock I haven’t seen it yet and am extremely impressed you have read The Sunday Times by 11 Shock I have been up since 2am and so far have: cuddled with the cat, MNetted and texted an insomniac friend. I am so fucking cabin fevery (apologies for language Blush)

Thank you for good interview wishes for DH. I shall update, and you must too, Judy! DH is reluctant ATM to leave me in sole charge of the DC (who are actually teenagers Hmm) so I have assured him my mother will come and look after me, after all, it’s not like I’m in my 40s or anything Grin I can imagine the rest of MN crying “LTControllingBastard”! Wink

Still no SOTD and this is annoying me greatly.
