Little things that mean Style Death

I read the other day that one of the worst things you can do style-wise is to miss out a belt loop on your trousers. I've never done this, but I do permanently have a hair bobble around my wrist. This is apparently a big NO. What other little things should I not be doing?

I don't wear jeans but there plenty of flat, non formal wear shoes available.

CaulkheadUpNorf · 28/05/2017 12:57

I think there are two different ones -
Sports trainers that you would wear for sport and fashion/leisure trainers which might include things like converse and supergra. The second I would wear with jeans.

nina2b · 28/05/2017 13:23

Erm... loafers look fine with jeans.

Theycalledmethewildrose · 28/05/2017 13:44

Imo supergas, converse, new balance etc look far more stylish with jeans than hideous ballet pumps. In Winter, Speing and Autumn brogues look good too.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 28/05/2017 13:58

bsbabas those are Kipling bags and I have 2. One has a furry gorilla and the other has a metal one. I know they are a bit marmite but I love them.

DameDiazepam I was out with sandals and no toe polish the other day. I had just done the nail brightening treatment thing from scholl and didn't want to stain my nails with polish. You wouldn't really have noticed my feet anyway as my legs where a dazzling shade of white and you would have been blinded by the light radiating off them long before you seen my feet. (I do not tan and won't use fake tan)

Oh actually can I add fake tan to the list. I hate the look of orangey or patchy fake tan on people. It looks fake and makes you smell like soggy digestive biscuits.

emilybrontescorset · 28/05/2017 14:02

Dodgy digestive biscuits!!!
I don't gnome unpainted toe nails are unstylish either.

emilybrontescorset · 28/05/2017 14:03

I do dislike those caterpillar eyebrows, especially on fair people.

Gnomes are my style inspo

squoosh · 28/05/2017 14:09

I hate brogues worn with a skirt or dress. Really do not flatter anyone's pins. Fine with trews though.

"Erm... loafers look fine with jeans."

Ok, but loafers are not going to cushion my feet as I walk to town, go around the shops for hours, walk to the party tonight and (if it's not too late) walk back, so it's going to have to be trainers.

I like Kipling bags with the wee furry monkeys. Mind you I love my turquoise Michael Kors one as well. (It's a leather bag in a fun colour hat goes with a lot of my outfits, I couldn't give a damn if the designer is deemed uncool) It depends on the outfit though, Kiplings are casual bags and wouldn't go with more formal clothes.

Another personal hate is toenails past the ends of the toes. Vom. And it's deliberate as they are usually worn perfectly pedicured with a French manicure-style glo-white stripe to highlight the length. As if French manicures on hands aren't naff enough.

squoosh · 28/05/2017 14:26

Yes French manicured toenails are bizarre looking.

AwakeCantSleep · 28/05/2017 14:34

I hardly ever bother with nail polish. (I am very clumsy and can't get fingernails or toe nails looking good.) The haters will just have to live with it Smile

Having narrow feet and particularly narrow ankles, I find it incredibly hard to find shoes that fit, never mind look stylish. Shoes that I cannot wear include pump shoes/ballet flats, court shoes, loafers, most sandals, espadrilles, most trainers (as they tend to be far too wide), wellies (ditto), high leg boots (ditto) and high heels (can't walk in them even if they do fit). I tend to wear my shoes for 5+ years for that reason. So you may well spot me with shoes that don't match the outfit, but at least they are shoes that I can wear.

Also, "eyebrows that have never seen a pair of tweezers". You mean natural eyebrows? What's wrong with that? Are men equally scorned for not plucking their eyebrows?

But then I'm probably unusual (read: weird) in that I dislike anything "fake". Fake tan, fake eyelashes, hair extensions, permanent makeup, botox/fillers etc. I am also not a fan of tattoos. I don't judge other people for any of those things but would never choose them for myself.

squoosh · 28/05/2017 14:45

I don't hate tattoos as such but I do think they often clash too much with the clothes a person is wearing. Kind of like always wearing a pair of red socks, no matter if you're wearing jeans or a cocktail dress.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/05/2017 14:49

I would much rather have natural looking eyebrows than plucked ones, it's rare these days that I see anyone with nice eyebrows tbh.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/05/2017 14:51

ThanksForAllTheFish I bet my legs are whiter than yoursGrin I hate fake tan too!

squoosh · 28/05/2017 15:15

I'm a former self tanner now fully embracing the pale. One day I just git tired of the sheer faff of fake tan, downed my tools and said 'no more'. I think the whole fake tan look is a bit passé now. And as a naturally very pale type it never looked like a real tan on me. A friend of mine got married in around 2006 when St Tropez tanning was at its height. She looks at her wedding photos now and laughs at how orange she was, but at the time it was the look people were after. The Victoria Beckham mahogany look.

emilybrontescorset · 28/05/2017 15:20

Gnome = think!
There must be some very stylish people around according to this thread.
Not quite sure where you are all hanging out.

BusterGonad · 28/05/2017 15:21

Nicola Roberts from Girls Aloud suddenly got her fashion mojo when she ditched the fake tan. She's never looked better imo.

SherlockHolmes · 28/05/2017 15:28

Those shorts that hang just below the knee.
Anything with any sort of writing on.
Puffa jackets.
Sportswear worn at any time other than for sporting activity.
Mega-high heels.
Too much gold.
Too much make-up.
Clothes that are too small.
Chipped nail varnish.

nina2b · 28/05/2017 15:32

Tattoos: like red socks with a cocktail dress!
Love it!

nina2b · 28/05/2017 15:35

I have a great Zara black t shirt with OYKOT on it. Usually don't like logos but that one is cool.
