Little things that mean Style Death

I read the other day that one of the worst things you can do style-wise is to miss out a belt loop on your trousers. I've never done this, but I do permanently have a hair bobble around my wrist. This is apparently a big NO. What other little things should I not be doing?

I wear trainers almost every day and so do many friends, we all wear trainer socks that show and I think we look fab! Grin

I also do hair bobble on wrist though so maybe I'm a no hoper.

My biggest issue is women who wear the wrong colour foundation and trowel it on. Honestly you'll look so much better with a light touch and a better shade.

Also mascara on bottom lashes, please avoid or go in with a very light touch. One of my friends looks she has 2 spiders on her face...

They're definitely not style death but I personally can't bear white jeans. Particularly with pastel tops.

Leggings are fine if you're headed for a workout or your arse is covered. Otherwise please no.

But hey, each to their own, we'd be very dull if we all dressed the same.

It's TOKYO backwards.

No. I have no idea why that's cool either.

It's not like you're going to be seen in too many rear view mirrors.

lizzieoak · 28/05/2017 16:31

I disagree that if you're wearing jeans you're already casual do anything goes. Look at Parisian women on the Sartorialist - they don't look frumpy in jeans! Paired with a button up shirt and a little blazer jeans can look elegant (I think).

I was thinking about this thread today at an outdoor event. A few people stood out as getting it absolutely right.

I would say that they had thought about where they were going first and then fit their style to the situation. So there was a lady - must've been 70s-ish -
wearing a sleeveless top (she had the arms for it) straw hat, beautiful silvery blond hair, and fantastic burnt orange palazzo pants. And a larger lady, wearing a loose smoky navy dress with just a very simple shiny silver bangles. Neither were supermodels, but they got my attention because what they were wearing was perfect for such a sweltering day. Nothing was tight or clinging, they both had great posture and looked completely comfortable.

I've stopped keeping the hair bobble on my wrist since the teenagers I was with at work assumed i self-harmed and it was a distraction technique. i don't think they believed me when I said it was so I always had something handy to get my hair out of the way. Times have changed.

Gingefringe · 28/05/2017 17:32

I dislike jackets with different material arms - usually leather or some hideous sparkly stuff.

bananafish81 · 28/05/2017 17:56

How much trainer sock is acceptable? I absolutely loathe any sock on show at all, but even with the smallest trainer liner I still end up with a tiny bit of white visible

I absolutely cannot do bare feet as they rub, plus my feet get sweaty, which makes the shoes risk being a breeding ground for a fungal infection

The only way I've found I can make brogues wearable is with a pop sock, as there's absolutely no way I can go barefoot without ripping my foot to shreds, and trainer liners are just horribly visible

Neither are visible unless you're looking up close (although I'm paranoid about the Nora Batty wrinkly look with the pop sock) but I can't find any better solution for the lovely bare feet look that doesn't actually involve bare feet

Completely agree on the fake tan. Although preferable to the alternative if not embracing the pale. I can't believe how many women come in to use the sunbeds at the salon where I have my nails done!!

But I have to defend my use of leggings! I don't see how a pair of leggings under a dress or long tunic is any different to a pair of thick black opaque tights?

bananafish81 · 28/05/2017 18:07

Trainer haters, you'd absolutely loathe me - stan Smiths are a wardrobe staple, I live in them at work

If outfits like this are as hideous as some posters consider them to be, I'm guilty as charged of crimes against fashion!

Gah. Links garbled.

Trainers like this - I love such utterly 'hideous' looks like this, the horror of training shoes for non training!

I don't see a problem with leggings as long they're good quality, not see-through and you wear the right shoes/top/jacket with them.

MoominFlaps · 28/05/2017 18:17

Haha, I live in trainers. I think all regular shoes and boots are ugly and boring.

Theycalledmethewildrose · 28/05/2017 18:38

I don't see leggings and tights being equal. With leggings, you need a pair of socks or have a bare foot and then shoes. Tights create a more streamlined look. I don't think leggings look bad with long dresses and think combined with sandals, it is quite a boho look. I really love long dresses worn over wide trousers. I dislike shorter than below the knee length dresses with leggings though, which imo is a 'cheap' look.

PenguinOfDoom · 28/05/2017 18:51

I never wear leggings under dresses because to me it would just look like extra bulk. If I have a dress which doesn't work with bare legs, I'd wear opaques.

The last time I wore leggings, I wore a longer layering vest with a thin slouchy sweater over it and Converse (with non-visible trainer socks Grin ).

bananafish81 · 28/05/2017 18:59

I wouldn't wear leggings with a bare foot - I only ever wear them with boots so they look exactly the same as black tights, but thicker and more opaque. Just warmer and feel less exposed if it's a short dress that's only mid thigh

BusterGonad · 28/05/2017 19:17

I don't see leggings as the same as tights either, sure leggings are so much more comfortable but they don't finish an outfit like tights do and leggings can look unstylish, I do speak as someone that always leggings though as I'm in the Middle East and bare legs are a big no no and tights are too sweat inducing in this heat! Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 29/05/2017 00:11

"I only ever wear them with boots so they look exactly the same as black tights, but thicker and more opaque. "

I exactly. Nobody else would know I'm wearing leggings rather than tights.

bananafish81 · 29/05/2017 00:40

I tend to wear leggings with jumper dresses or little floral dresses that are too short to feel comfortable wearing tights with, but too obviously dress-like and not tops (so would look a bit silly with trousers). Outfits a bit like those in the pics

I also have very twiggy legs so need something more robust on my lower half to look a bit less scrawny!

Out of interest, why are non-knicker showing leggings worse than jeggings or those thin skinny jeans?

squoosh · 29/05/2017 00:55

Leggings only work if they're worn with boots. It's when there's a gap of flesh between legging hem and shoe that it looks frumpsville. Also people who wear leggings as trousers where the bum isn't covered look bizarre, no matter how pert the arse is.

squoosh · 29/05/2017 00:59

Me either. Bare feet for me in a pair of shoes would end up a bloody and sweaty mess.

Attractive.

Therealslimshady1 · 29/05/2017 10:32

Talcum powder (baby powder or similar) are the secret to bare feet in shoes!

Therealslimshady1 · 29/05/2017 10:33

Bananafish, that is how I wear leggings!

MikeUniformMike · 29/05/2017 11:34

Hoodies and (matching) jogging bottoms worn by youths and unathletic men, often with their hands in the pockets. Urrrghgh!

MikeUniformMike · 29/05/2017 11:38

On women, leggings that are too thin to hide the colour of knickers, or with a thong underneath but showing a vpl so it looks like 2 great floppy buttocks. Oh and tight beige leggings or thin trousers showing lumpy cellulite.

What colour is a skintone bra?
