Little things that mean Style Death

I read the other day that one of the worst things you can do style-wise is to miss out a belt loop on your trousers. I've never done this, but I do permanently have a hair bobble around my wrist. This is apparently a big NO. What other little things should I not be doing?

Leaving the leather tag stamped with the word 'leather' on a handbag. Those are meant to be taken off!

Trills · 25/05/2017 08:02

As well as the stitch in jackets - did you know that pockets are often sewn up?

If you have any items of clothing with disappointing "fake pockets" - check to see if there are real pockets under there and you just need to remove some stitches.

LapinR0se · 25/05/2017 08:02

See-through leggings or white jeans
People who wear heels they can't walk in. Awful awful
Too much fake tan
Things that are too tight

NO WAY @ ShatnersBassoon. No way do men actually do that! Do they leave the price tag on as well?

I used to keep the hangar loops on my clothes until my mother told me it looked bad. Told off by a pensioner.

I like the sound of "train lady in the fishing hat" and agree with you Bat. It must feel bloody fantastic to not give a shit what anyone thinks, I'd love to be more like that.

Although I do wear trainer socks with my trainers and my Superga, I didn't realise I would have people Hmming at meShock what the fuck am I supposed to wear?

yousignup · 25/05/2017 08:09

Don't beat yourself up about it @IfYouGoDown. I've been wearing bobbles on my wrist for more than 30 years. How do you think I feel?

burnishedsilver · 25/05/2017 08:10

I sometimes notice people keeping the x stitch on the back of a long coat. It must make it difficult to walk in.

Nothing kills a stylish outfit like bad posture. I'm guilty of this one myself.

Nickynackynoodle · 25/05/2017 08:11

I'd rather leave the pockets sewn up otherwise they stretch and ruin the line of the clothes.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 25/05/2017 08:14

yousignup Don't worry I expect no one noticed.

I think you must be bloody devastated, embarrassed and never want to leave the house again

TawnyPippit · 25/05/2017 08:15

Yes, I was just going to say that about pockets - I very often leave them stitched up, particularly on work jackets, so they lie straight/don't gape and I'm not tempted to stuff loads of things in there.

yousignup · 25/05/2017 08:17

I just realised I'm lying about my age, and it's actually 40 years of bobbles on the wrist. @IfYouGoDown would you hace been "that" friend and told me?

MakingMerry · 25/05/2017 08:17

Yes, I tend to keep the pockets stitched. It's less common with women who tend to have bags, but I see a lot of guys who load up the pockets of their suits with keys/phone/wallet/loose change and it's ruined the cut, particularly if it wasn't a very well made suit in the first place. Gaping, bagging pockets do not improve the look of any item!

nannybeach · 25/05/2017 08:18

white socks with dark trousers especially on men, with shorter than required trousers showing the socks, white bra (or coloured) under white top, got to be "flesh" coloured. socks with sandals roots on hair (you even see them on TV presenters) tights under shorts, saw a girl in town the other day with WHITE tights under denim shorts, why? I do have leggins, cos I have dogs to walk on beach/fields.VPLs of any sort.Pj s in shops in daylight hours especially.

Trills · 25/05/2017 08:19

OK, leave your pockets stitched up if you WANT to (you pocket-hating fools), but I've encountered people who didn't know they had the choice, they thought the pockets were "fake".

I wear trainer socks too. Surely they are preferable to having 'proper' socks on show?

blueskyinmarch · 25/05/2017 08:24

My immensely stylish 19 yo wears trainer socks with her trainers and you can see them. I am voting that one is completely fine!

morningtoncrescent62 · 25/05/2017 08:24

There's a woman who gets my train in the morning, who's like Captain Anti Fashion. She wears bunchy elasticated waist midi skirts, a la St Michaels of 1983

Oooh, I remember those, used to wear them all the time.

flapflops · 25/05/2017 08:24

I hate those hanger loops on tops and cut them out asap. Hate to see them hanging out.

Leaving the 'leather' tag on bags.

Leaving the designer label on suit jacket sleeves.

Crocs.

People who wear full on rambling/hiking style clothes when they are just out and about in town and not up a mountain.

Leggings worn as trousers with a short tip.

Too much fake tan/eyebrows/nails.

MakingMerry · 25/05/2017 08:28

Haha, with regards to the shorter than required trousers showing the socks look, I work on a university campus, and every person under twenty-five is wearing precisely this at the moment. It may not be stylish, I'm not a fan, but it is certainly fashionable. It's long trousers at the moment which are the faux pas.

DurhamDurham · 25/05/2017 08:29

I hate to see labels on the soles of shoes and boots, not sure why but it just seems so lazy not to remove them. I mentioned to a work colleague that she had left a label on her shoe and she said 'oh I know, I never bother taking them off'......I couldn't get my head around that, why would you not? Confused

IheartDodo · 25/05/2017 08:31

I have actually sewn up the pockets on some suit trousers I have - they gaped and made them look funny.
I'm also guilty of the hair tie on the wrist!
It is worse when people have their hanger loops sticking out.
Tbh though I work in a science department of a university so things like socks and sandals, missing belt loops, outdoor wear and dodgy hats are fairly standard!

Zaphodsotherhead · 25/05/2017 08:35

Oh dear lord, I wear fleeces and walking trousers all the time when not at work - and I haven't given up! I just live in the countryside and, if I can't climb a gate in it, I don't wear it!

Yy to bra straps showing - in the same vein, wearing backless/low back/laced back tops with a humongous bra underneath, very visible.
