Little things that mean Style Death

I read the other day that one of the worst things you can do style-wise is to miss out a belt loop on your trousers. I've never done this, but I do permanently have a hair bobble around my wrist. This is apparently a big NO. What other little things should I not be doing?

I drop my kids off at school with make up on and hair done might just be a school run but still don't see a problem with that tbh unless going to the gym then I just wear my gym clothes

Therealslimshady1 · 27/05/2017 09:34

I always think that the label sticking out by the neck is a small but potent style killer. I sometimes tell people their label is,sticking out Grin they are always glad I tell them.

Lots of the faux pas on this thread I commit.

Outdoor clothes, hiking boots : yes, I live in the country and walk my lurchers daily. Sometimes we walk in the woods, and will eat in a pub. Out and about in hiking boots and a barbour...shock horror?! Not in rural Hampshire.

Leggings, also wear those, cause they fit easily in welly boots (daily muddy walks)

Despite my usual country attire, I love urban style and S&B threads. Love fashion. I have nice clothes but don't get to wear them enough!

MardAsSnails · 27/05/2017 10:24

Completely agree with TSSDNCOP

I'm the least stylish person day to day, but I went to a wedding a few weeks ago, and almost all of the younger women (20s and 30s) were wearing dainty dresses which looked lovely, until you looked at their feet. Some wearing what I've recently as in whilst reading this thread realised are those Irregular Choice horrors, or chunky platforms like I was wearing when I was 15 and got for about 12 quid in schuh cos nobody wanted them even then

RaqsMax · 27/05/2017 10:43

Wearing coloured bras under white tops. When I was little, if we passed a woman wearing a white top with a black bra underneath, My Mum always used to make a clicking noise with her tongue and muttered 'Common!'

Ditto if you have a lovely backless/straplless top, or top with criss-cross straps on the back....then for goodness sakes wear the appropriate strapless bra. Looks awful with all the bra straps showing.

Today 01:32 TheDowagerCuntess

But maybe she crashes out in leggings and crop tops and Crocs in her private rooms at the palace.

grin

I doubt it, though. If you don't like leggings, even crashing out in them has zero appeal.

Ain't that the truth.Smile

GavelRavel · 27/05/2017 11:42

you see literally 100s of women on public transport in the morning going i to London wearing the pencil skirts, tights and trainers. it does look odd i know but is just a commuting thing. seems acceptable to me as you often have to run for platform changes etc.

just out of interest why are fleeces hated so much? everyone wears them when skiiing, because they're warm. is it so bad to wear them as a jumper in the winter? is it just thw frumpy, mumsy association?

ThanksForAllTheFish · 27/05/2017 12:02

Ok not caught up on all the posts so apologies if I'm repeating anything.

For me it's unpolished shoes. I love polishing shoes and spot a scruffy pair a mile of. I'm not saying you need to go for the mirror shine parade gloss look but a quick polish does wonders.

Agree with keeping price tag stickers on soles of heels - looks awful.

Missing or loose buttons is another pet peeve of mine. It takes 2 minutes to break out a needle and thread to fix a button.

I love irregular choice shoes (sticks tongue out at all the haters) but I do have a thing for fugly shoes. I own many fugly shoes including platform trainer monstrosities. It's just a pitty that irregular choice don't fit me so I can't buy them (5 too small and 6 too big Sad ).

I still lean towards alternative/goth clothes so probably don't fit in with some the standard fashion rules. I don't really care though and love the way I dress.

In fact I know of one fashion no no that I do regularly and will make all you super stylish people cringe. Socks with ballet flats. I like how it looks, it stops my heel being rubbed raw but I know it's generally frowned upon by the masses.

My current hates for fashion are the jeans that look like the bottom cuff has been put through a paper shredder - just why?

Also full sports gear for walking around town. Unless you are running around a track / participating in sports you do not need a tracksuit. Ditto running clothes. Yoga gear is slightly different and can be pulled off by the bohemian types but generally looks naff on most people.

BusterGonad · 27/05/2017 12:17

I really love alternative styles and generally would never slate anyone for being different, what I don't like is when someone boring and safe mocks someone for being different. I'd far rather see a goth out and about doing their business looking all alternative than someone in a outfit fitting in with the masses. Don't get me wrong when I'm not doing anything or not meeting anyone I'm in my boring gear but I'm also not afraid to wear my colourful flowery dresses and blue fur coat with a bright lippy when I've work or am meeting friends. Any excuse for me to don a dress! Grin

Ruthie2k · 27/05/2017 12:25

I saw a woman in a car park the other day in an off the shoulder top which was lovely. The full on thick strapped bra really made the look. Not.
I wear crocs in the house and have bobbles on my wrist, and I don't care.

For me the little things are stickers being left on the bottom of shoes and the stitch being left in jackets

Th self control needed not to whip out scissors.....

BusterGonad · 27/05/2017 12:47

Has anyone mentioned hair extensions that are visible at the join! Not a nice look really!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 27/05/2017 13:07

I feel I have to defend leggings here. If worn with a dress, how is it remotely different to wearing black opaque tights?

I noticed in Copenhagen this was a big thing with very pretty young women cycling wearing very pretty, full skirted dresses- they looked fabulous.

Re bobs Anna Wintour has had this for decades. Me too.

Re "sheeple" I love how judgemental people who don't care about clothes are.

ElfrideSwancourt · 27/05/2017 13:11

I love Irregular Choice shoes (getting my first pair for birthday next week Smile) but then I love anything a bit sparkly - my girls call me a Niffler when we are shopping. And I live in Fitflops (have 20+ pairs including shoes, boots etc) because I have plantar fasciitis and a bad back and they make a huge difference to my pain levels- it was a revelation finding sparkly orthotic shoes! I love clothes but am old enough to not be huge on fashion. Don't really get the hate for trainer socks- but not an issue as I never wear them.
Re thin top/bra issue - I wear a vest top in matching colour underneath. Also am a teacher and visible underwear just not appropriate!

8misskitty8 · 27/05/2017 14:04

francis don't think play suits look good on anyone over the age of 12 !
Agree about hair extensions. Seeing the clip/ring just looks tacky.

Leggings i think look fine with a dress or long top. They don't however look good stretched to the max, no matter what size so you can see through them and see the wearers underwear.

BusterGonad · 27/05/2017 15:02

8miss I have quite a few playsuits and I'm 38, I get loads of compliments when I wear them, I do wear the right underwear and they are super flattering on me. I have long slim legs and I go for the short ones that look like mini dresses.

MrsLucyEmerson · 27/05/2017 15:05

Elfride

Do you feel like a cast member from the Disney parade when you wear your shoes?

humanfemale · 27/05/2017 16:55

Playsuits are great for all ages (provided they're zipped up, obvs).

For me: patterned tights (except fishnets which are badass)

BitOutOfPractice · 27/05/2017 17:18

I also own play suits and jump suits and I'm way older than 12

nina2b · 27/05/2017 18:44

Think of the name: PLAY suits. Wrong on so many levels.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 27/05/2017 19:02

I don't like original choice personally but my dsis wears them as part of a vintage looking outfit and they look good. Quite Paloma Faith type styled. With my plain jeans and T-shirts they'd look weird.

squoosh · 27/05/2017 19:16

Those three quarter length trousers some men wear in the summertime. They're usually white and they're always hideous. Can't express how much I hate them.

BusterGonad · 27/05/2017 19:30

Playsuits, skater dresses, fit and flare dresses are my wardrobe staples regardless of my age.

ImperfectTents · 27/05/2017 19:33

Yesterday in the sun on the local seaside prom there were a few women wearing those cut up shorts with their arses hanging out. This can never be a good look. I say women but one of them was 13 yrs old. It's horrific

BusterGonad · 27/05/2017 19:39

Hmmm imperfect those shorts are a bit much, I find it a bit sad when someone is wearing those and they quite obviously haven't the figure for them, part of me thinks it's great they have the confidence but all in all it's a bad look!
