Lipstick challenge for January

Don't worry, its not a 'thing' - you don't have to post photos on Facebook or get sponsorship for charity. Just something I'm planning to brighten up a dull January Smile

The idea is that you wear a different lipstick / lipgloss every day through January. I'm planning to stick all of mine in a big box and do a 'lucky dip' every morning. It will be a bit of fun (in a slightly pathetic way) and will be interesting to see which lipsticks I get excited about pulling out and which I'm maybe not that fond of anymore

Anyone else fancy it?

Grin @ Buster Good luck with your nude colour! Apparently nude lipsticks are the in thing this year. Why?! They better not get rid of all the lovely interesting unusual colours. Bare Minerals have released a collection of forty nude lipsticks! Argh!

Today was W7 Blackberry from their Viva La Berry collection. Someone at work said they liked it. (Not an actual work day for me, the joys of part time retail.) I think the whole collection of six lipsticks cost me about £12!

SapphireSeptember · 26/01/2017 23:30

Thank you Bubbles! Ooh, Revlon lip butters...I ordered the six I've wanted for ages off eBay, one of them came in what looks like a sweetie wrapper, fresh from the factory! I'm going to share it, I've never seen them like that before!

Wow sapphire I love the look of that.
I had an amazing lip day yesterday.
Nyx lip lingerie. 90's brown liquid lipstick. Amazing. Lasted for hours until I removed it and drank, ate, kissed. Will be going back to purchase more. Never wear brown but husband even complimented. That never happens too! Nude but still with impact

For red bubbles I recommend either Kiko or Kate moss rimmel brands. Seem easy to wear and don't bleed which is my big fear with reds as I don't want to feel like a fox and then look in a mirror and resemble a clown!
I have to buy m&s school uniform next week. Maybe a cheeky Diego palette too?

leedy · 27/01/2017 09:55

Binned yesterday's Nyx berry, colour was great but I know I have better.

Today's is an old favourite, Nars Gipsy, which I think I've been buying on and off since the early 2000s. My first red lipstick after years of 90s browny tones - it's a fairly muted berry red, super flattering. Love.

BubblesDarling · 27/01/2017 15:05

Kevin Aucoin in Leajana- described as a soft rose pink. Moisturising and good staying power. Enjoyed wearing this today. I've wanted Bloodroses for a while.... much darker then I would normally wear. So tempting.

Thank you Another. I will check those out tomorrow & the Diego palette Wink

Leedy, Nars Gipsy looks so lovely. My list of lipsticks is gettting longer. Love this thread!

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 27/01/2017 15:44

Love Gypsy.
Today us Revlon Romantic.
A bright red, it can have some issues with bleeding, so has to be applied carefully.

In other news, I have been trying out Darphin intral serum and moisturiser and it's magic stuff.didn't need foundation, just done concealer.
Expensive though.

Dulcimena · 27/01/2017 16:29

Ahhh love Nars Gipsy too. V pretty colour.

Today Lipstick Queen Saint Wine. It's lovely! As with the lip butter, not sure why I stopped wearing this one! Tomorrow is the last of my LQs, Saint Rouge, inspired by the red talk.

Hope this thread doesn't stop next week, I'm really enjoying being inspired :)

PixieMiss · 27/01/2017 16:34

I take a god awful picture anyway but I am sure I don't need to tell you how awful the lipstick is on me. Maybe if it was darker or a matte colour it might look better. Or a higher quality lipstick? Either way...ew

PixieMiss I think you look lovely! Is that one of the NYX wicked lippies? I want them, all of them! evil cackle But I think you're rocking that lipstick, it really brings out the colour of your eyes. (NYX do a matte blue BTW. Wink It's called Midnight Muse.)

Today I forgot to wear lipstick! I am sad, but I wasn't feeling quite right today, and I think it was the last thing on my mind...Sad I will do better tomorrow. (Well, today now, it is half past midnight here...)

Pinkie Are you googling everything? Grin I found this article where they've all been swatched.

BusterGonad · 28/01/2017 07:45

Yesterday I came across the Make up forever limited edition lipsticks. Blues and Greys. I thought of you Sapphire!

SapphireSeptember · 28/01/2017 08:36

Oooh, wonderful! I have heard good things about Make Up For Ever, I think there are at least six lipsticks I want...

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 28/01/2017 14:15

pixie you look lovely. Matte probably would be better but I think you rock it!
Im wearing a soap and glory reddish brown. About 6 years old but looks really dated. Hoping to get it finished soon.

MimieD · 28/01/2017 15:28

Found a lipstick I bought in duty free ages ago: Estée Lauder ego red, a lovely pinkish red.

MimieD · 28/01/2017 15:31

Actually name is Red Ego...

BusterGonad · 28/01/2017 15:36

I'm going to my sons school tomorrow to help out with some arty stuff for a play, I'm tempted to rock a smoky eye and burgundy lip! 😂

JennyHolzersGhost · 28/01/2017 17:30

sidles into thread

Hello lipstick queens. I'm a lipstick newbie - in fact I haven't even properly braved lipstick and am only wearing gloss so far Blush
I've just read the whole thread and am feeling enthused.

I hope you don't mind but I'd appreciate your collective wisdom.
I've got 2 glosses so far: Laura Mercier lip glacé in Desert Rose which is basically like a high-gloss nude for me, I bought it a couple of years ago when I was smartening up my work look. I find it very durable though a bit sticky. And then I just recently bought the same line in Poppy which is a bright red, as an evening lippy. It takes some getting-used-to, seeing a proper lip colour on my face ! But I've had compliments so I intend to persist. Good staying power. However it's a bit much for work I think.

Can anyone recommend a relatively light-textured lipstick (I fear I can't be trusted with heavy-pigmentation 'proper' lipstick as I'll just get it all over my face) in a shade somewhere between the two ? Ie. a bit more of a colour but not HELLO RED. I could probably go a bit coral rather than lighter pink - I have a coral blusher that suits me (though I do also find pinks work ok on my cheeks too). Call it a starter lipstick, if you like. Something user-friendly. No lip dryness issues here afaik. Budget is flexible. Would like to try on in person before ordering so something that's in the shops rather than online-only please .... all suggestions gratefully received !

Also what does MLBB mean ? Have seen it throughout the thread but wasn't sure.

JennyHolzersGhost · 28/01/2017 17:31

Oh and it doesn't have to be high-gloss. Sorry, should have said. Totally open to matte or anything in between. Though I have quite thin lips - is gloss better in that case ?

BusterGonad · 28/01/2017 18:46

Hello Jenny. Welcome to the lipstick lovers thread. To start MLBB is My Lips But Better! So a nudey shade. In regards to your lipstick challenge I'm just having a think. I love a coral. L'Oréal do a Matte one called VIP it's really nice and cheap too they also do another one similar but I can't remember the name. I'll try and find out. You could go for pinky one for the day too. Did you see my swatch of Mac Craving? That's a nice one for a beginner too. I have a Elizabeth Arden one called Neoclassical Coral. It's just amazing but may be a bit bright if you're not used to it.

Dulcimena · 28/01/2017 19:11

Hi Jenny, lovely recs from Buster. If you're not used to wearing colour on your lips and don't want to go all out, my recommendation would be something like a Revlon Lip Butter (in Boots, Superdrug etc) for a touch of colour but nothing too dramatic. Some shades are more pigmented than others. I was raving about Juicy Papaya downthread, which is a coralish one, but there are loads of shades. As an aside, don't be scared of darker shades in sheer formulas, they're usually less bright on the lips and so a bit less scary in the mirror.

More solid texture but still sheer are Lipstick Queen Saints (from John Lewis, Space NK etc). I'm after Saint Pinky Nude next, there is a Saint Coral which may fit the bill for you, but Saint Natural is a great "easy" colour. Will keep thinking...

BusterGonad · 28/01/2017 19:24

I also have Mac Vegas Volt, it's a bright fresh opaque coral and is quite striking. This is a hard lipstick challenge for me as I love brights! 😂

JennyHolzersGhost · 28/01/2017 19:29

Thank you for all the tips ! I'll have to take your list to the shops for some trying on sessions.
It doesn't have to be coral btw, it could be a pinky shade. The counter lady at Laura Mercier when I bought the red gloss said most shades would work with my skin tone - but maybe they say that to everyone ?! She said steer clear of the darker berry/browns. Presumably because they will make my lips look thinner ??

JennyHolzersGhost · 28/01/2017 19:32

Have just put the Poppy on and looked in the mirror, and actually for work I think a slightly darker or cooler-toned red/maroon/burgundy might actually be subtler, because Poppy is very bright and more like a tomato-red if you see what I mean ...? Would welcome advice.

JennyHolzersGhost · 28/01/2017 19:32

Too many 'actually's there Grin

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 28/01/2017 20:18

Hi jenny this thread has totally made me up my game. Can I recommend Clinique chubby sticks? Easy to wear. Some bright and vivid but feel like balm. Or just a lipliner and gloss on top? I feel safer with lip liner as less likely to bleed so you can feel confident that it won't smudge. Or my new fave nyx liquid lipstick. That has been amazing so far but very matte. Good luck and go for it. I just feel so much more confident since wearing proper lipstick everyday.

clairethewitch70 · 28/01/2017 20:42

Could any of you lovely ladies -fellow lipstick addicts- help me find a replacement for either of my two favourite lip pies.

  1. Iron Lady from Miss Selfridge in the 1980's - a very shimmery mid purple

  2. 625 Parma Violet L'Oreal Shine Delicieaux - a lighter shimmery pinky purple

Both discontinued

Thanks
