Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Hello CalmitKermit! I'm with you on the over-sweet fruity stuff. No thanks.

Beleive it or not, the Lynx Urban Daily Fragrances are excellent. I particularly like Tobacco and Amber. This week, in the hot weather, I tried Iced Musk and Ginger and that was good too. They're under £4 from Superdrug. Longevity's not great, but they smell fabulous.

im not keen on fruity stuff either tbh. i don't mind a bit of sweetness but too much fruit just puts me right off. i like a bit of tartness with the fruit to balance it out a bit. big white florals and orientals are my favourites though, above anything else

SlinkyVagabond · 24/07/2016 11:49

Oh thank god it's not just me BattleAxe! My ds 25 wears them and I thought Lynx! But they are really good.
Not directly a perfumista post, but dd and I were in a Very Famous Store in Edinburgh a few weeks ago, it was a rare chance to actually see some of the rarer scents mentioned here. Was looking at the Juliette has a Gun range and the woman who was staffing the section was amazing terrifying, straight out of Ab Fab, but brilliant knowledge of high end scents. Dd was bemused.

Judydreamsofhorses · 24/07/2016 15:12

SOTD is Chanel 19. I have a gazillion perfumes but this is truly "mine" and the one I always, always re-purchase.

Kermit, do you like Vetiver type scents? I really like Tom Ford Grey Vetiver, and the Diptyque vetiver is also very good. The Escentric Molecules range might also be worth a look.

CalmItKermitt · 24/07/2016 17:05

Ooh thanks everyone! Glad nobody's thrown their hands up in horror at me liking Lynx shower gel! I'll look out for those Miss Battleaxe 😄

I don't know if I like vetiver Judy! 😊

cressetmama · 24/07/2016 19:48

SoTD has been the R&G Osmanthus. It is cheap, and light, and hits the spot when I can't be bothered with choices.

On a serious note, I also loathe fruity scents, and Osmanthus isn't. I also generally don't like overt florals, but this is. Cannot wait for my plant to come into flower to smell the real deal.

BrillianaHarvey · 24/07/2016 20:32

Just bought Grey Vetiver for my husband! It's a repeat, though bought the edp this time rather than the edt - can anyone comment on the difference? My SOTD is Jo Malone Lavender and Coriander again, which cuts nicely through today's clagginess.

MissBattleaxe · 25/07/2016 13:48

SOTD Narciso EDP Poudree by Narciso Rodriguez. It's beautiful! The poudree effect makes it smell like a classic in the making. White flowers and a woody base. I love it.

nothing but a quick squirt of Green Tea here. i'm too hot for anything else and i'm trying to do a big cull of clothes and shoes so it's good to keep reapplying as it's light and fresh and not overpowering

teta · 25/07/2016 14:59

Houbigant oranger en Fleurs today for movie and shopping today. My very kind friend has just sent me another large decant.Love the flowers with spicy nutmeg and it manages to be sophisticated but not too much ( whilst having the makings of a modern classic).

Judydreamsofhorses · 25/07/2016 17:14

SOTD here is Bella Freud 1970. I probably should have sampled it more thoroughly before buying, as I don't totally love it, but I think I will like it more in cooler weather.

BrillianaHarvey · 25/07/2016 18:40

SOTD Atropa Belladonna by Shay and Blue. A bit heavy for the weather, if I'm honest.

ggirl · 25/07/2016 21:51

Has anyone been able to test the new charlotte tilbury scent of a dream (awful name)

needastrongone · 25/07/2016 22:10

Hello folks.

I hope that you don't mind me popping in and asking a question?

Holidays beckon on Friday, therefore Duty Free perfume awaits. I am a Tom Ford gal if truth be told, and rotate various scents of his daily.

So, unless you good people can persuade me otherwise, I'm after another Tom Ford scent. My absolute favourite, and actually the first I was bought, was Azure Lime, if that helps?

He has a whole array of perfumes, so I am after a recommendation really.

TIA Smile

I reallu cannot get enough of Miss Dior - especially with this gloriously warm weather we are having at the moment! It is light, sophisticated and just the right amount of flowery for me! I recently wrote an article on the best summer perfumes this year - hope you find it useful! features.shopomo.com/health-beauty/fragrances/6-best-perfumes-summer-2016/

MissBattleaxe · 26/07/2016 17:58

Hello needastrongone and welcome! Sorry I took so long to respond. I answered you on the other thread. Hope you get something good. Do come back and tell us if you do. Bon voyage!

Escale a Parati is also a favourite of mine, but I love tonka bean in scent. It seems to warm and flatter citrussy scents and gives them some lasting power. Portofino is good too. It was a close run thing.

needastrongone · 26/07/2016 18:41

Thank you so much, I've seen the other thread. I adore perfume, I just find something I like (Tom Ford) and get set in my ways, so suggestions are great.

I have even bought cheap sunglasses, to enable further perfume purchases on Friday.

I like the idea of a set on the other thread, thank you.

Judydreamsofhorses · 26/07/2016 20:12

SOTD was Kiehl's Musk. I feel like I'm getting the cold and this is very comforting.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 26/07/2016 20:25

Now perfume people. There's a Eau de Toilette which is something like NSCP, it's very cheap, Asda was selling it for £1.50 down from £3, has any one tried it, is it cheap and nasty or ok. I think the name is awful for a fragrance, it reminds me of NSPCC.
Are cheapo perfumes an abomination that don't belong here Confused

SlinkyVagabond · 26/07/2016 21:01

Well toast, I have Madame Glamour from (shhhh) Lidl. I get loads of compliments when I wear it. And they do matching deodorant and hand cream. Think I got the lot fiord just over a fiver. And I'm tempted bt a couple of next ones, one in a red bottle one in a green. Then of course there's Perfume Parlour.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 26/07/2016 21:13

Grin Well, just shows you then. You may as well get the whole range at that price. I'm going to get one of those Asda ones, I need a small bottle no more than 100ml to go in flight hand luggage. I'll try and remember to come back to thread with my review.

ButteredToastAndStrawberryJam · 26/07/2016 21:16

Found them NSPA!

Nope. I'm a huge champion of El Cheapos. Some of them are brilliant. I frequenetly wear Chique, Panache, Avon and Al Rehab. Today my SOTD was Avon Perceive Oasis currently at £5.50 for 50ml. Love it.

No snobbery here! Bring on the bargains.

Having worked in the fragrance business I know that most of the money you are paying is for marketing, packaging, retailer margin, and not for the actual juice. And the price points are deliberately kept high because it fosters the impression that you are investing in a "luxury" item.

There are definitely higher quality fragrances out there, using more expensive ingredients (something like Tauer springs to mind), but I would doubt that the contents of a bottle of Lidl Suddenly Madame Glamour is significantly worse quality than the latest identikit flanker from (say) Gucci, Calvin Klein or Lancome.
