Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

SOTD was Miu Miu, but have put on a sample of Heeley In Vetiver Veritas after having a bath and getting into pyjamas. I like it, but prefer TF Grey Vetiver.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 15/07/2016 22:34

Cointreau yep, like not love here. I get no patchouli at all though! Tons of leather and some spice at first, then 'generic perfume floral' then nada! St least it was cheap.

SOTD was Kerbside Violet by Lush. Scrummy Parma violets and greenery.

BrillianaHarvey · 15/07/2016 23:15

Hi - new here too. SOTD is Jo Malone's Lavender and Coriander. I'm having a real thing for lavender scents at the moment, but I'm finding this one a bit austere.

cressetmama · 16/07/2016 20:43

Sotd has been Prada's infusions d'Iris. I have a birthday coming up and am becoming fond of this; should I ask DS (who's asking what I'd like) for a small bottle?

Thanks to Frugal, I have made a long list of decants from Crystal Flacon, and now need to decide what to leave on it. Between 10ml decants and samples, the order was (is) blushing long. But I fancy something new, and perfumistas struggle to choose. (Many are just replacements of favourites that are used up or being rationed out.)

JaceLancs · 16/07/2016 22:40

SOTD for me is terracotta by guerlain - feels like summer for me

Expellibramus · 16/07/2016 23:14

Elle, I've been wearing CDG Rhubarb Sherbet. Really fresh rhubarb to start with but dries down to slightly warm, but not too sweet, vanilla on me. comme-des-garcons-parfum.com/perfumes/sherbet-series-5/

Judydreamsofhorses · 17/07/2016 00:21

SOTD was Narciso Rodriguez for Her.

ggirl · 17/07/2016 11:29

Phew found the new thread ...

Just found a bottle of Guerlains Insolence which is SOTD , parma violets anyone?

Which brings me to the question , how do you store your bottles , do you keep the boxes and store in the dark ? I have new dressing table and really would love to display them and hang the consequences ...living on the edge ..lol

Also how long do most scents last ?? I have a few dating back some years ...Laura Ashley Green Meadow ..gorgeous and get lots of compliments but don't think they sell it anymore.

MissBattleaxe · 17/07/2016 11:34

If it smells good, you can use it. It's gone off if there's a sort of burnt quality to it.

I have vintage Arpege and Vintage Jolie Madame that are around 40 years old and they still smell good. I bought a little Body Shop fragrance from a car boot sale ( because you never know) and it had definitely gone off. I reckon it had been kept on a windowsill. It instantly smelled burnt and synthetic.

I keep mine on my dressing, in their boxes if they have one. My dressing table gets no direct sunlight and is always in the shade. My collection seems to do OK there.

I'm new! I've got a 4 months old son and I wanted a perfume he would remember me wearing when he was growing up. I always distinctly remember my mum wearing Chanel no5 and when ever I smell it, it takes me back.

Currently, my perfume is chanel chance eau tendre. I wore it on my wedding day.
I'm also partial to vitor & rolf Bon Bon...I love the bottle. I am always searching for that perfect 'signature' perfume.

BaronessBomburst · 17/07/2016 12:05

I often lurk on these threads and have finally plucked up the courage to bid on a vintage bottle of my favourite perfume on eBay. I remember the first spray from a new bottle and thinking confused "My god, what's happened? That doesn't smell right!" And now I know about oak moss and the various reformulations......
I've been trawling various sites trying to pick up tips and to figure out how to date the bottles.
I'll tell you what it is if I get it! Grin

And scent of the day today is Maja by Myrurgia. I've stopped using the perfume itself since they last dicked around with it, but instead use the shower gel, deodorant, and moisturiser, and waft around the house enveloped in the fragrance.
Besides, it's cheap! :)

MissBattleaxe · 17/07/2016 12:34

Welcome Baroness! I'm dying to hear what you've bid on. Do let us know if you win.

One from the sample drawer today: Scent and Sensibility from Dorissima Goldmund (not a brand I know at all). At first sniff, it's powdery and quite sweet, in fact it's freshly bathed and dressed baby! Completely delicious so far, and I will be interested to see how it develops. S&S is not my favourite Austen novel; that would be Persuasion. And the enablers here need no help from novelists!

Judydreamsofhorses · 17/07/2016 15:27

Today's perfume is Miller Harris L'Air de Rien. It's usually an autumn/winter scent for me, but it's lashing rain and I wanted something that feels cosy and comforting. I know a lot of people don't like this, but it's one of my absolute favourites and I'm onto my third bottle.

CointreauVersial · 17/07/2016 19:25

Judy - I've only tried L'Air de Rien once, and I can't remember a singular thing about it. I must dig out my sample and try it again - on a cold day!

SOTD is Neela Vermeire Pichola. Orange blossom followed by creamy sandalwood. Just right for today.

MissBattleaxe · 18/07/2016 10:02

Scent and Sensibility used to do a great sample service, but sadly, Ronny had to close the business down. She was always my first port of call for Tauer samples which are really hard to get now ( not counting Les Senteurs and their pricey 1ml samples).

BaronessBomburst · 18/07/2016 15:07

I so want to go and sniff things based on these threads, but there's no parfumerie local to me. Just the standard 'beauty county at the chemist's' fare.
That's how I ended up with Maja.
Scent of the day is the modern version of the ones I'm bidding on, so it's a secret. 😂

ToElleWithIt · 18/07/2016 15:50

Thanks for the rhubarb recommendations. I'll try to hunt some of those down too.

SOTD was Serge Lutens - Jeux de Peau. I got a sample when I bought something. I see it's meant to be reminiscent of freshly-baked bread and gets glowing reviews, but I don't get that at all. I just get oodles of caramelized nuts followed by a not very interesting sandalwood. Too sweet for me. I much prefer Dries van Noten which has a similar description, but I think is more sophisticated?

Judydreamsofhorses · 18/07/2016 20:20

SOTD is Diptyque Philosykos. Love this in summer and autumn, never reach for it in winter or spring.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 18/07/2016 21:14

missBattleaxe i haven't forgotten about your parcel that needs to be sent, ive been away until tomorrow and it wouldnt fit in any of my bags otherwise i'd have sent it already, it'll be on its way by the end of the week!!

MissBattleaxe · 18/07/2016 21:31

No worries. No hurry! Just very grateful that you helped me out.

Heeley Sel Marin today - perfect for the sunshine.

FurryDogMother · 19/07/2016 19:14

Hello, lovely smelly people :) If I adore Esteé by Esteé Lauder, and Unforgiveable Woman (can't remember who by), any ideas what else I might like? Am travelling through an airport tomorrow, so planning on much spraying with samples :)

MissBattleaxe · 20/07/2016 12:09

Hi Furry and welcome! If you like Estee, you might want to branch out into other classic aldehydes such as Lanvin Arpege or YLl Rive Gauche.Great choice by the way! I'n rather partial to Panache myself. It's hugely underrated and so cheap now.

FurryDogMother · 20/07/2016 12:13

Thanks so much, also for the info that what I like is a 'classic aldehyde' :) The flight's only just over an hour long, so whoever sits next to/near me won't have to suffer perfume overload for too long, but I do enjoy a good squirt in the departure lounge!
