Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Zoflora is a wonderful very concentrated disinfectant. My late grandmother used it around the house. It smells really beautiful. I like the hyacinth one.

I tried Stash SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker yesterday. It's magnificent! It's woody and rich and full of incense and patchouli. Totally gorgeous and nothing like any other celeb scents. In fact I don't hold with any snobbery about celeb scents because some are excellent. IMO Stash beats just about every recent mainstream launch into a cocked hat.

Baroness I have the zoflora love. Try Winter Spice. A few of them smell like aftershave from the local market but winter spice is lovely, spicy orange and cinnamon. I don't really use it for cleaning (cleaning? what's that Grin)but I soak cotton wool balls in it and put them behind the radiator.

I shall try the SJP Stash, I really rate Lovely and have bought it for all the teenagers in the family as it's a nicer introduction to perfume than the mass market oversweet celebrity scents.

Does Harrods still have a pet shop in it? I remember when I was young (I had a slightly different life from the one I lead now WinkGrin) that they had a pet department with...maybe monkeys in it? Actually I'm wondering if I've imagined that now I've typed it Blush

BaronessBomburst · 25/10/2016 12:12

I can't get Zoflora here unless I order online from an ex-pat website.
But I did, last week, inspired by this thread, buy hibiscus and cranberry disinfectant from a local supermarket instead of my usual lemon. Blush
I have been googling. Stash hasn't been launched here yet, and the Boots website makes me want to cry; it's just full of pretty and frivolous things. I love those perfume baubles!
I also note Tweed gift sets are on 3 for 2 so that'll solve a few problems for some of you. Grin

ReadyToSignOff · 25/10/2016 12:36

Harrods' pets' corner is no more... it was always my children's favourite and they would ask to visit on trips to London. I think there were concerns about animal welfare Sad I never saw a monkey there though!!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 25/10/2016 17:48

Baroness, I shall join you in your Zoflora-less-life. Sad

Day 3 of stinking cold. Could not even smell bolognaise burning to bottom of pan or lemony brillo pads which used on said pan after, so am not wasting any perfume at the mo', just hurling a squirt of one of my FBs at myself as I trudge to school.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 25/10/2016 21:02

Joining the zoflora love-in. I have hyacinth but DH thinks it's awful. Will look out for winter spice though.
When I worked in a&e I was the only staff who knew what it was when a patient came in having drunk it. Everyone else thought it was fortified wine!
I have been collecting samples to make myself an xmas advent calendar as unlikely to receive jo Malone one. Mega hints dropped though. Bought sjp set in Superdrug (3x 10ml lovely variants for £10) so have added that. Also boots have lovely Gucci minis so may need those too in addition to some samples from guerlain and Tom ford!
Sotd deseo by j lo which seems to suit today. Mellow summer scent but seems very hard to get.
Get well soon thenlater

MissBattleaxe · 25/10/2016 22:20

I love Deseo! I'm a bit worried though because last year you could get it easily for under a tenner and this year it's getting very scarce. I adore the bottle too- like a wet jewel!

Very exciting Perfumed Court delivery today.

Cafe Rose
Grace Coddington
Lipstick Rose
Guerlain L'heure Bleue
L'artisan Premier Figuier Extreme

AnotherPinkyPie you suggested Fig Extreme for those who like the Body shop fig. Spot on. It's fab. Thank you Flowers

I have an arm of Fig and an arm of L'heure bleue, both of which I've never tried before.

BaronessBomburst · 27/10/2016 12:08

I got my Skins delivery on Tuesday! Which is also when I came down with the lurgy. Sad
Yesterday I tried Vengeance Extreme. It goes on smokey, minty, and a bit medicinal. Then goes to roses with patchouli. Then softer and creamier, but still with patchouli. Lots and lots of patchouli. In fact, I woke up in the night, sweating with a temperature, and all I could smell was patchouli.
I don't like patchouli.

That said, if you do like patchouli, it's a fabulous perfume. The creamy rose notes make it so much more sophisticated, and sexy, than the patchouli oil my friends all sported in our youth. I knew it had patchouli in when I picked it but hoped it would be more a supporting role. I shall admire it but not wear it again.
Grin

BaronessBomburst · 27/10/2016 12:11

On another note, have you seen the Zoflora thread in chat?!
21 pages of disinfectant love. With some fabulous photos. Grin
and Amazon will post a selection pack overseas

Gingernaut · 27/10/2016 12:21

I am stockpiling Zoflora Winter Morning.

I've just been in a B&M store and seen Winter Spice and Cranberries and Orange.

Just bought a Boots Esteé Lauder special offer.

A special make up vanity case filled with beauty goodies (for my DSIL), £58 if bought with a bottle of fragrance.

I usually go for Youth Dew, but this time I bought Cinnabar.

Mmmmmmmmm. :-D

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 27/10/2016 13:14

Yay Glad you like it cock. I'm now looking at Timbuktu. Anyone tried?
I went looking for winter zoflora in my local b&M but may need to order on amazon. Estée Lauder offer sounds very intriguing ginger.
Sotd deseo. Love it if very summery. So have ordered off eBay.

SlinkyVagabond · 27/10/2016 13:14

I can't stand the Christmassy ones, the spicy cranberry types. If I'm going fir Christmassy home scent I like the piney or "snowy" ones. I blame a Christmas working in body shop when the big scent was cranberry. I went home with a whacking head every night.
I can't be bothered with scent today. Home making beds and stuff.(kill me now) I do like t

SlinkyVagabond · 27/10/2016 13:23

(iPad being a dick) I like to spray something nice towards the foot of the bed on the bottom sheet then it wafts up without being too overpowering.
Interesting about Stash, I believe super drug may have an offer on it. Sounds my thing!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 27/10/2016 17:35

I am getting my nose back, and have just been to dd's class meeting (very snobby designer clad Italian mammies) in 31 Rue Cambon. First time I've worn it "properly". Very sweet and powdery. Not at all as nice as when I smelled it at Stansted and went "wow!"

(I wonder if the sampler bottles in airports are designed to smell so fabulous you have to fork out for them and then they are nothing like....hmm)

It smells very modern-flowery-powdery.

My Perfume Parlour package arrived! Only sniffed Aromatics Elixir dupe so far, and don't know who they're kidding. Grin I shall test them all properly over the next few days and report back.

How are you liking L'Heure Bleue Cock?

lasttimeround · 27/10/2016 23:13

Ah zoflora... im currently having a winter morning moment. Lovely. Not sure about hyacinth tho as the flowers make me nauseous And I v much agree with poster abive on cranberry - smells of shop to me too. I also have bluebell woods zoflora. It's nice. Even dh keeps going ahhh it smells nice!

I'm currently really liking body shop night jasmin lotion for sleeping in. I find lots of body shop scents too synthetic and the jasmin is kinda pungent but I seem to like strong scents for sleeping in. Also known for youth dew at bedtime. I'm addicted to it and keep wearing it when I have days at home now the weather's turned. I don't sardines wearing it to work as I keep seeing how many people think perfume in the office is a total nono. And youth dew? Well it's not subtle. But it's just so rich and satisfying.

BaronessBomburst · 27/10/2016 23:32

No, sardines in the office is always a bit taboo. 😂😂

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 28/10/2016 00:57

have bought Truth or Dare Naked based on a pp description. hope it smells as good on me as it did them! less than £7 including delivery from ebay as it had a damaged box. I'm not fussed about boxes as i have a huge lidded box i keep the majority of my perfumes in so they are protected from the light in that anyway Smile

SOTD was Marc Jacobs Daisy as I wanted something in offensive and easy to wear. my bottles almost empty but i don't think it will be a repeat buy. I'd be happy enough to get it as a gift but i just don't think i'd buy it myself, nice as it is, there's so much else i'd have before it if it were a choice

Cockblocktopus · 28/10/2016 06:58

Thenlater I think it needs another try. At first it was just all powder and didn't feel very sophisticated. Then all this amazing benzoin came through and it was a totally different beast.

Someone on fragratica described it as the smell of someone else on your skin and that's exactly it. Like you've had a late afternoon shag with a secret lover and hours later you can still feel them on your skin hours later. Hmm I don't mean that in a gross way. It reminds me of candle light, early evening, dressing for dinner and my rather wild yoof.

But not when it smells powdery.

Anyway, it needs another sniff.

SOTD was commes de garçon Grace by grace Coddington.

I really, really like the fresh, clean slightly floral rose but it's gone a few hours later. Sad

Cockblocktopus · 28/10/2016 07:00

Sorry if this has already been discussed but any thoughts on Penhaligons Ostara? I know it's been discontinued but I think I might like it. But I can only find FB at 100Au$ and no decants.

lasttimeround · 28/10/2016 07:02

Oddly they don't like my sardines Grin dumb phone.

I need to stop reading this thread. So many interesting suggestions

SlinkyVagabond · 28/10/2016 07:41

No sotd today as I'm off to waft around Fenwicks and search out the nicher parts. First stop a big squirt of coromandel to see what the fuss is about. Just by the name I know it's a "me" scent.

OCSockOrphanage · 28/10/2016 09:32

From Fenwicks to Liberty, Slinky? Lots of niche counters in Liberty....

I am still thinking about today's scent. Yesterday was Iris Cedre (a flanker for Infusion d'Iris) and it was autumn perfection, light fresh orris with a wallop of pencil shavings. Yum. And I can still catch a whiff of it from the cuff of yesterday's jersey.

ReadyToSignOff · 28/10/2016 12:55

Well it's almost the end of an olfactory frustrating week! I put in a largish order over at the Perfume Parlour (Flowerbomb Rose Explosion, Blue Sapphire, Cafe Rose, Black Orchid and Lolita Lempicka homages Grin) last week, but they haven't been dispatched yet. I rang up to see what was going on, but they have run out of 13ml spray bottles and are waiting for new stock... noooooooo! (This now explains why that size option disappeared from the website whilst I was showing my friends at the weekend.). I have a horrid stuffy cold - hope you didn't pass it on ThenLater! - which won't help much when I hit Harvey Nichol's perfume department tomorrow Sad. Anyway, looking for positive, SOTD is Opium (which you could smell whilst wearing full NBC suit and gas mask) which has led to me thinking of the Milton Lloyd 'Kantali' Opium copy. Has anyone tried it? Only £4.45 with free delivery on eBay!

BaronessBomburst · 28/10/2016 14:34

SOTD is Lady Vegeance. I can't tell you what I think of it as SOTD for DS was his favourite Lonesome Rider (yes, I was hoping he'd fall for one of the cheaper Lynx fragrances) and he's sprayed it so liberally it's taken over the house.
I'll have another spray once he's off to his swimming lesson.
