Just invested in some Rive Gauche and it smells gorgeous!!! Also recently bought some Red Door and love that too. Which of the older classics do you remember and still love?

OP posts:
Eliza22 · 20/06/2016 12:44

The original Miss Dior. How could they mess with it? It is nothing "like" now.

MissBattleaxe · 20/06/2016 12:59

Eliza- you need Miss Dior originale- it's the mossy chypre. The new one is a sweet fruity floral.

Eliza22 · 20/06/2016 21:06

Yes, have tried it. I guess it could be me that's changed. It just didn't "warm" the same in me.

MissBattleaxe · 20/06/2016 21:13

Sorry, I thought you meant the modern Miss Dior- the fruity floral. Miss Dior Originale has been reformulated, although it's nearer the old Miss Dior than the new Miss Dior, so it's not you!

Eliza22 · 20/06/2016 22:10

Confused. Why mess with a classic? Beyond me!

thecatfromjapan · 20/06/2016 22:15

They re-formulate them sometimes because a lot of the older perfumes contained now-banned ingredients, sometimes for cost, sometimes to make them more in line with changing tastes.

The old chypres are un-formulateable now

cityrat79 · 20/06/2016 22:19

Amarige, anyone?

No, just me!

MissBattleaxe · 20/06/2016 22:24

I LOVE Amarige, even though it's louder than a megaphone.

massi71 · 20/06/2016 22:41

I used to adore Tendre Poison (the one in the green bottle) which was discontinued.

Imagine my sheer joy finding a bottle of it randomly in an old antique shop in Hastings last year. DH couldn't understand why I was so happy!

It smelt wonderful and now I ration how often I wear it

massi71 · 20/06/2016 22:51

Would love to find Safari and Polo sport for women though. Wore them to death. Then had a chanel No5 phase.

Feeling all nostalgic for those now

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/06/2016 23:32

I've just googled polo sport it's still available unless it's changed.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/06/2016 23:34

I have a huge bottle of Tender Poison that dh gave me - I didn't know it was discontinued! I'll go easy with it now I knowGrin

Tender Poison perfume oil!

OlennasWimple · 21/06/2016 04:39

Lulu - I thought that blue bottle was so sophisticated

Eliza22 · 21/06/2016 07:27

Ah, Cat... Didn't know that!

MissBattleaxe · 21/06/2016 08:25

catfromjapan is correct. IFRA regs mean that genuine oakmoss has been banned now, so only synthetics are used. It explains why vintage chypres do so well on ebay.

many people find their old favourites smell very different now, sadly.

Only1scoop · 21/06/2016 08:32

Anais anais

Rafinee

Poeme

Vanderbilt

massi71 · 21/06/2016 10:19

Does anyone recall Giorgio?

You could smell that a mile away!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 21/06/2016 11:23

My Mum used to say Amarige smelled like an ashtray. Grin

I quite liked it, without feeling love exactly.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 21/06/2016 11:56

Ooo another one YSL Champagne. I think they changed the name when a child DRANK IT!

WalkingInTheAir13 · 21/06/2016 13:02

These are vintage 1960's. The blue/white is Guerlain Shalimar. The gold/white are Madame Rochas. Heartbreak! They stopped making refills (and completes of these many years ago). I still love and wear Shalimar.
A niff of Helena Rubenstein's Apple Blossom would evoke a great wave of nostalgia for me - I'm sure that I still have some talc knocking around - circa 1970!!

Vintage classic perfumes you remember and love!
ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 21/06/2016 13:11

My Mum also had Madame Rochas and Mystere de Rochas (which I always thought was Mr Rochas Grin)

Aren't they all wonderful?

This thread has inspired me to reread Luca Turin's Perfume - a brilliant read. (He makes me snort out loud with his opinion on Amarige!)

Eliza (hello, it's me DrankSangria, your beauty stalker!) A half full bottle of vintage Miss Dior ended unsold on ebay just yesterday. I've been humming over it for ages. It looks very genuine to me. It will probably be relisted.

telesoftware · 21/06/2016 13:38

Love Paloma Picasso. I've been wearing it for years and couldn't imagine wearing anything else. I'd love to find a vintage bottle as I gather from reading basenotes.net, etc. it was even more heady.

I used to wear Opium when I was a teenager but having smelt it recently it's nothing like the heavyweight glam Oriental it used to be!

I liked Christian Lacroix's C'est La Vie but it didn't seem to be available for very long.

Maybe not classic (and not classyGrin) but I loved the blue Limara body spray donkey's years ago. Can't remember the name but it contained patchouli and leather notes. Have yet to find a perfume that's a more grown up and sophisticated version of it! Grin

whiteonesugar · 21/06/2016 13:42

My DM always wore YSL Paris growing up and if i smell it now it transports me back!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 21/06/2016 14:17

I am in fake (perfume parlour) Paloma Picasso today!

I had Impulse Nirvana (black pot) and I think, a pink one called Captivation.

What about soaps and bathcubes? Boots Lemon Grass was my favourite. (after Moonwind talc and Midas bubble bath!)
