New thread!

I've noticed that 3/4 days after Retin A my skin is very reactive.
Acid toning alone is ok but any serum I put on after stings like mad and my face goes brought red for 10-15 mins (vt c/hydraluron/LRP one) so the question is do i stop toning for a bit? Stop serums for a bit (oils are fine)? Stop both for a bit? Or just stop Retin A Grin
Anyone know?

My Active Formulas Vit C kit has arrived, can't wait to give it a go!

CindyEcstacy · 20/05/2015 10:58

I have the oz vit c serum - it's lovely

heyheyheygoodbye · 20/05/2015 11:05

So far my favourite thing from the CH CB Beauty Box is the Tata Harper Replenishing Nutrient Complex. I put it on dry patches, sore spots, any zits, and on DH's patch of dermatitis and it's lovely! Smells gorgeous and really seems to work as a kind of Rescue Remedy for the skin :) I want to try more of their products now.

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/05/2015 11:16

bigbuttons can you give me some guidance on the Active Formulas Vit C please?

It says 'Add the desired amount of vitamin C Powder Mix to the Base Serum and shake well to create a custom Vitamin C Serum of up to 20%' but I have no idea what quantities of powder and base serums I should be using?

Fatstacks · 20/05/2015 15:46

Just got my Korean sheet masks to sleep in but I can't wait so I'm going to wear it now.

Ivedunnit · 20/05/2015 16:57

Any recommendations on where to get retin A? I currently have 0.05% and it doens't seem to be doing anything.

plumstone · 20/05/2015 17:09

3 for 2 in Boots on all skin care - just bought the nip and fab dragons blood pads, with hyaluronic acid and salicylic aced and dragon's blood, want to start using salicylic in the morning and keeping the glycolic for evening.

Also they are now selling Masque Bar Sheet masks, Anti Wrinkle, Brightening, and two others whose names escape me!! Any who £9.99 for three is much better that £19.99 for 4 from Indeed Labs. Will test, report back and if they are better then will stop with the Indeed Labs. Also invested in the LRP spf50+ Anthelios XL - Anti Brilliance, Anti Shine.

bigbuttons · 20/05/2015 17:12

mitzy this is the recipe I use:15% C,E + FA with HA (New 6/23/09)

1 tsp L-Ascorbic Acid
3 tsp Distilled H2O
1 tsp SKB
1 tsp Glycerin
1/4 tsp Ferulic Acid
1/4 tsp vodka
1/8 tsp Vitamin E or Rosehip Oil
1/2 tsp Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Use 2 little glasses.

Phase 1 glass (water)

Put L-AA in glass, add water, stir frequently and let it fully dissolve. Depending where you buy it, that can take up to an hour..
(If, and only if, after 60 minutes it's still gritty, you can sit the glass in a warm water bath for a minute, and stir, stir, stir.

Phase 2 glass (oil/emulsifying)

While you are waiting for the L-AA to dissolve, you can proceed with the rest like so. Put the FA in the 2nd glass, pour the vodka in and stir, now add the SKB. Mix this together, and put it in the microwave for 6ish seconds. When you take it out it should be whitish and serumy.. Give it a stir, add the oil and stir + add the glycerin and stir..

Phase 3 (putting it all together)

When the L-AA has fully dissolved, add the contents of both glasses together, stir well, and add the HA in now and stir well..

You should have an opaque off white serum when you are finished, with a consistency similar to a syrup (minus the stickiness Laughing ) If you use Rosehip Oil, you will start off with a bit darker color (great oil though!)

For anyone that is using an HA powder, you will 1st have to make it into a liquid, or it will just ball up.. Embarassed

Please don't be tempted to add more L-AA.. It will only wind up in your toilet bowl.. Embarassed Our skin can only absorb so much Besides, it will give you a load of grief trying to dissolve it.

this is a simple 10% serum. If you want it stronger double the LAA

Simple C Serum – 10%

1/4 teaspoon vit C
1/4 teaspoon glycerin
1 + 1/2 teaspoons distilled water

Dissolve the C in the water, then add the glycerin.

Cathyandclaire I have a similar reaction and am doing the same as you. I've been laying off the retin a until the reaction and or peeling goes but then the same thing happens so having read a few articles I think that because I haven't been using it routinely my skin isn't getting a chance to acclimatise. I've decided that I'll stick to once every third night come what may but in the meantime lay off the acid toning until my skin adjusts and expect to have to put up with 'the uglier' for a while.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 20/05/2015 21:22

Ivedunit, most of us got the retinA from ebay I think. Mine was frim Thailand. Geoff's Pharmacy UK is another website people have used.

Bapple · 20/05/2015 21:51

Have just noticed that CH is doing a blog post on how to use a retinol / vitamin A product and accepting questions in the comment section.

Thanks MrsG and Back2 I'll stop the acid toner for a bit, I've got so sucked into the CH routine I felt guilty leaving it out, like I'd not done my homework or something! Blush
I think my skin is not as bad after this weeks Retin A so will up it to every three days now ( on a plus note I won't have to buy any FAB pads for a while)

MrsKoala · 21/05/2015 08:15

Hi all. Can I join you. I haven't read the thread yet. I will do later when the DC are in bed.

I bought retinol stuff off the internet based on recommendations on here but I don't know how to use it.

I've recently had some light treatment done for my rosacea and had a some thread veins zapped on my face at a clinic and bought their ridiculously expensive products. But I'm hoping to find cheaper alternatives on this thread. I bought this so I'm thinking use it first then start on the retinol.

I've decided to make this the year I really look after my face.

TweenageAngst · 21/05/2015 08:30

OK another lurker since BB's very first post. Which inspired me to get of my butt and start taking care of my skin.

I have dehydrated oily skin and suffered really bad adult acne in my 20's so have scarring on my jaw line and cheeks. I also grew up in a very hot country before sunscreen was akin to religion. Having escaped the sun in my early 20's I look better than my younger sisters who are still frying but still I looked like someone in their late 40's.

So I have been doing the routine.

Morning-Cleanse with Clarins green alpine herbs
Tone with pixi-glow or clarins exfoliating toner
Hydrating Tone with Murad
Serum-Keihls line reducing or the free clinique one
Moisturize with Clarins day cream
Clarins SPF 50
Evening-Cleanse with the Emma Hardie Balm or Sunday Riley ceramic slip
Tone with Murad Hydrating toner
Treatment with liquid gold or skin ceuticals retinol 1.0
After liquid gold I am using a generous 10 ml sample of Sunday Riley good genes OMG it is great!
Moisturise with Alpha night cream.

The difference in my skin is amazing, blackheads have gone, lines around eyes and mouth look better and someone asked me yesterday if I had botox!
My skin must be like leather though I get no tingling from the acids or retinol and no peeling or redness.

So this is a big thanks to BB and Kundry et al

Cult Beauty has sent me some great samples- I love the Sunday Riley stuff though it is a bit pongy. The Good Genes is really great
Zelens and Verso day cream both lovely

plumstone · 21/05/2015 09:08

The Boots sheet masks are lovely, this morning I added in and did this:

Single cleanse - Dr Dennis Gross Vit C clenser - have to keep this as an occasional treat must buy cetaphil
acid tone
hydrating toner - Body Shop Vit E
Boots Anti wrinkle sheet mask for 20 mins
massage in residue and add Clinique dark spot serum
Kate Somerville Goat Milk - sparingly can make me quite shiny
LRP SpF 50 - first time for this and will use less going forward - took a lot to rub in and very white!!!!
Make up - only four products and 2 of them are for my eyebrows!!!!

V. pleased on the whole, read the CH post on retinols and thats the next and final purchase!!

PS woke up at 5:30am so had time for the sheet mask this morning, would not normally manage during the week and normally keep them for evening or the weekend!!!

Germgirl · 21/05/2015 09:16

I had surgery 9 days ago & have felt so awful that all I've done to my face is drag a wet flannel round it. Despite that, my skin was very good, maintaining the smooth, non dehydrated look & feel that it had previously due to about 6 weeks of my new regime.
So, 2 days ago I finally felt well enough to start proper cleansing / acid toning / serum / day & night cream again, and my skin has gone all nasty!
I have a horrible scaly dry bit between my eyes, several spots and my skin just feels all dry & nasty!
I suppose I should just persevere with the products etc that sorted it all out before but it's very annoying.

EthelCardew · 21/05/2015 10:11

After Superdrug Vit E hot cloth cleanser caused an outbreak of pizza face, I've been using Cetaphil for a few days and am amazed at the results but it's not great for taking off make-up.

I've heard micellar water mentioned as a MU remover, would it be suitable for dry/sensitive/reactive skin or is there something gentler out there? I only use CC cream, no long wear kinda stuff.

If I can get this and the SPF moisturiser sorted, I think I'll have found a decent basic routine with products my skin actually likes! Shock

AM

  • Cetaphil Cleanser
  • Vichy Aqualia serum
  • Vichy Liftactiv eye and lash serum
  • Currently Simple light moisturiser, trying out Avene AntiRougeurs Jour SPF soon

PM

  • Yet to find MU remover
  • Cetaphil Cleanser
  • Clinique mild clarifying toner
  • Vichy Aqualia serum
  • Vichy Liftactiv eye and lash serum
  • Nivea sensitive night cream (open to trying something else)

I hope a few weeks of this will settle my skin and then I can think about testing out other treatments but I'm not sure retinols etc will ever work for me. Sensitive skin is a faffing nightmare!

Teladi · 21/05/2015 10:54

My face is definitely looking better! It's so exciting!!

Ethel I (of the sensitive face!) use micellar water for my first cleanse - I have used it for a while even before I was on these threads and find that my skin does not react to it.

Here is where I am at

AM
Decleor AromaCleanse (I am using this up)
Dr Haushka clarifying toner
Effaclar Duo
Avene Antirougeur Jour

PM
Garnier Micellar Water
AromaCleanse or LRP Toleriane
Nip+Fab pad
Effaclar Duo (sometimes)
Helenere Maitrise du Temps serum (I got it in a Glossybox a while ago)

MrsGuyGarvey · 21/05/2015 13:43

I used retin a last night as it was day three even though I was peeling a bit yesterday, but this time after about thirty minutes I slathered on some healing balm stuff (can't remember what it's called) and woke up worried about what I'd see only to find my skin looking really great. No peeling, so I think it's right to persevere with the retin a and slow down on acids.

I tried to get Clinique moisture surge spray yesterday but they'd run out, but I passed a body shop and bought a travel sized vitamin e hydrating toner. I tried it this morning and really liked it, so unless I get a reaction I think it's a good choice for non acid toning.

In the meantime I've now finished my Clinique smart serum which is very £££ so I need to find a less expensive alternative.

EthelCardew · 21/05/2015 13:50

Excellent Teladi, thanks. I will add the micellar in and see what happens.

I feel like a mad scientist!

Also interesting to see that the Nip+Fab pads are working for you. I'm wary of testing out too many things at once but I may give them a try after the MW experiment.

Fatstacks · 21/05/2015 14:05

Has anyone ordered samples from Paula's Choice?

I'm still waiting on mine being delivered.

Even the stuff from Pharmacy Geoff arrived.
