What summer dresses can I wear with leggings?

Things that don't look weird with them!

I just discovered I love dresses but hate my legs, so don't want to wear them without leggings... The only ones I have are winter dresses so look OK with them, but I'm worried about summer dresses looking 'off' with leggings...

help please?

Wardrobe, even.

GeorginaWorsley · 25/04/2015 09:44

I agree with wear what you like but I don't like leggings with dressesGrin
It was very popular a few years ago and I too embraced the Boden or White Stuff tunic with leggings look.
All I can say is that it was comfortable, in retrospect.
If it's not warm enough for dresses with bare legs I wear trousers or jeans.
If legs not up to baring I'd go for nude oiled look tights, but accept that look divides opinion on here too

I personally don't like longer dresses - around knee length - with leggings. Just think the proportions look wrong and also that the combination of a structured sort of dress which would be appropriate for work and casual leggings just doesn't work.

Long tops or tunics, Breton or otherwise, do look alright with leggings on other hand - though I'd personally only wear very informally around the house or to go to local shops.

But these things are all personal and if the wearer feels great in one of these combinations good luck to them - and they'll probably look confident which is always good.

Floisme · 25/04/2015 10:38

Well today I'm wearing leggings with a tube skirt and plimsolls. The skirt's just below the knee too so I guess that's a 'noooo!' from just about everyone on here Grin

Or maybe they're really footless tights (grey Spanx from TK Maxx)? The distinction seems to be very important for some reason.

As for bare legs Shock It's 12 degrees out there you loons. Put something on!

This thread is hilarious! I never wear dresses because I don't feel comfortable in them but people saying what is 'acceptable' or 'the only time it can look good' is just ridiculous.

The OP asked which dresses she can wear with leggings, not for an opinion on if she should wear them or not. Perhaps people who don't like the look would have been best to leave the comments to those who do. I really can't help thinking that some of the posters who consider themselves an authority on all things stylish, may not be quite as stylish as they think.

Marmaladybird · 25/04/2015 11:50

It depends on the dress. I wouldn't wear anything other than a casual short dress/tunic with them as it makes me feel like a bag lady - too much material. I have a couple of mid-thigh length 'ottoman' dresses that I wear with leggings for work. Anything longer than that length, I'd wear tights. Here's the dress so you can see what I mean (I have it in two colours):

I know that's not a summer dress but the shape and length work well for me (12-14 5'7")

HappyGirlNow · 25/04/2015 12:02

I love how posters with opinions are berated, called the 'fashion police' etc etc

This is a forum. An opinion was sought - what summer dresses are ok with leggings? Some posters, myself included, said that we don't like the look. Therefore 'none' would be our answer. Therefore we have given an opinion as requested.

So what's the problem? Those saying we are the fashion police or out of order for giving an opinion... Well can't you see the irony of that??? Grin

ElizabethHoover · 25/04/2015 12:12

the very WORD TUNIC makes me think frump

usualsuspect333 · 25/04/2015 12:14

I love a nice tunic.

I am the queen of tunics.

usualsuspect333 · 25/04/2015 12:15

The fashion police on S & B say things like 'a trouser' Makes me laugh a lot.

ElizabethHoover · 25/04/2015 12:19

BUT I LOVE YOU USUAL.

new thread ' how will i reconcile adoring Usual with her predilection for tunics'?

usualsuspect333 · 25/04/2015 12:21

My tunics are well classy. I shall wear them with a trouser instead of leggings.

ElizabethHoover · 25/04/2015 12:22

and a red lip?

if anyone ever says killer heels i want to shoot them. or ' dress it up or down'

ChilliAndMint · 25/04/2015 12:25

ikleboo, spot on!

WilburIsSomePig · 25/04/2015 12:29

Happy I have no problem with someone saying that they're not keen on a particular look or its not for them. But do you honestly think its reasonable for someone to tell another poster what is 'acceptable' for them to wear? It doesn't sound like opinion to me it just sounds like someone trying to be superior. I think that's a bit shit and unnecessary.

wigglylines · 25/04/2015 12:40

I wear tunic dresses with leggings all the time.

I couldn't give two hoots what the fashion police say! Shorter dresses suit my body shape, but my legs ain't pretty these days.

"Leggings won't hide big legs - they're skintight and accentuate every line! Be confident and just wear your dresses - I am sure they'll look lovely" obviously said by someone who just doesn't get it!

I'm not trying to hide my legs being fat. I'm hiding the cellulite, the bruises (I am a clutz!), the stubbly legs when I haven't had a chance to shave, or even - shock horror! - the hair when I've let my leg hair grow for a while.

The single colour of a pair of leggings looks a whole lot better than my dimply, stubbly, bruised pins!

Also, I don't want to have to worry about not being able to bend over / sit with my legs slightly apart etc in case people get a flash of more than they bargained for! If I'm wearing leggings I can move freely. If I'm not I feel self-conscious and restricted in a short dress, and why should I?

I don't want to wear maxi-dresses or tights as a "solution". Nor do I want to have to spend hours preening myself so I am always shaved, buffed, concealer over bruises, good knickers and trimmed bikini line AT ALL TIMES just in case I do end up flashing people by mistake in a short dress.

What a faff!

Short dress, pair of leggings. Long leggings in winter, cropped leggings in summer.

Works for me :)

wigglylines · 25/04/2015 12:43

I wore a dress with leggings to my last job interview. There was a lot of competition for the role as I recall.

I got the job. Grin

wigglylines · 25/04/2015 12:44

(Slight disclaimer, it was an informal interview. I would wear a suit to a standard formal interview).

Exactly Tizwailor!

The questions people should be asking are stuff like - does the shape of the outfit suit their body, their lifestyle, their personal sense of style.

All these "rules" about what you can and can't wear make me laugh!

Or want to go baaaaa! Grin

Norfolkandchance1234 · 25/04/2015 13:17

You can wear black leggings under any dress or skirt and it should look fine with a pair of pumps or sandals.

Not everyone wants their legs on show in the summer esp at work unless it's boiling hot of course.

Norfolkandchance1234 · 25/04/2015 13:18

And for the slightly overweight like me it means I can wear gorgeous dresses over my black leggings that I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing with bare legs.

s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d7/82/d5/d782d50006e6e720950fcb0a0a0ca3fd.jpg like this I think they look great but they are footless tights I often wear them as an evening thing.

Rosebag · 25/04/2015 13:57

When I clicked on this thread I was so looking forward to some links of pretty dresses that maybe I could wear with leggings… (I have varicose veins, blotchiness and all manner of things I'm happier covering up in certain situations)...I think OP was too…. Are there any? A year or so ago I bought myself a pretty navy, floral Kath Kidston dress and had blue leggings from Boden, which I wore turned up a bit in the summer. I got lots of compliments on the outfit and felt confident. Would love to find similar….
