What summer dresses can I wear with leggings?

Things that don't look weird with them!

I just discovered I love dresses but hate my legs, so don't want to wear them without leggings... The only ones I have are winter dresses so look OK with them, but I'm worried about summer dresses looking 'off' with leggings...

help please?

(The age 14 leggings are really generous which is how I wear them... Tragic but true!)

This thread, along with watching some young Muslim women on the bus has inspired me to experiment with different leggings outfits.

So today I'm wearing a black, just-below-the-knee skirt, high waisted, full and kind of ballerina shape (but without the froth) with a cropped grey sweatshirt, black leggings and black ankle boots. Tortoiseshell specs. No jewellry.

It's very austere except for the silhouete of the skirt and also totally covered up apart from a sliver of bare ankle. Tights or bare legs just wouldn't be the same Smile

All H&M or TK Maxx.

Not wishing to hijack, but can I just ask you hopeful do you buy your leggings online?
I just had a look at the molo website and there are loads of things on there I think dd would love, but it doesn't look like they ship to the UK.

The OP asked for suggestions for summer dresses, not asking 'should I wear dresses with leggings?!'

New Look

I'd wear this sort of thing.

Runningupthathill82--Harverina and others who see dresses as an alternative to tights - presumably you mean only for casual wear?

Leggings are an alternative to tights, not dresses!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 29/04/2015 10:45

I would probably use leggings less if there were more affordable dresses long enough for a grown up to wear but not frumpy as fuck. There are pretty fabrics made up into dresses that skim my quim. Then those hideous empire line things with tie backs that I as an over 40 am meant to wear... Pah!

OnlyLovers · 29/04/2015 10:52

Hopeful, same question from me – are you in the UK? If so how do you get your Molo clothes? And do you ever wear the T-shirts/vests, or just the leggings? I'd love a 'space bird' T-shirt if one of the bigger girls' sizes would fit me.

sebsmummy1 · 29/04/2015 10:54

My staple uniform is a dress with leggings, a short or mid length skirt with leggings and even shorts with leggings or tights!

I wear Peacocks ankle length ones and do one turn up. Then I team them with cute trainers and trainer socks. I also have stupid hair and LOVE scarves, like off the shoulder tops and vest tops. I am 40, so sue me.

Mid calf leggings are frumpy though so I don't go there and my leggings are always black Grin

I kill a thousand fairies a day btw, they are horrified.

This is the sort of dress I would wear leggings with on summer - on me as size 18 and 5'8" with T&A - I would reveal pants every time I stooped or sat down. It would be a little risqué even with tights but with some good quality navy leggings and a nice pair of sandals it would be fine. I would also like to see a properly sized version of the dress. At size 10 - 12 that length is fine. Size 14-20 a couple extra inches would make it more wearable without leggings. But leggings are fine.

herbaceous · 29/04/2015 11:18

I also think shirt dresses look good with leggings. For ease of walking/sitting, the buttons can be undone to a height that would be indecent without leggings, thus being comfy and practical while looking 'with it'. That's what I'm wearing today - denim shirt dress, black leggings, black and cobalt Nike roshe runs.

sebsmummy1 · 29/04/2015 11:20

I dare people to take some photos! I might if I go upstairs and determine I don't look a right state Blush

SaucyJack · 29/04/2015 11:20

I saw a woman yesterday with bare, pasty legs and heels. And orange lipstick.

If that's style...... you can keep it Wink

bigmouthstrikesagain · 29/04/2015 11:28

I like shirt dresses but they do not like me - I 'bust' out of them hulk style as my boobs are just too bloody big I have two shirt dresses but one I have to wear with a waist cost to hold the bust in place and the other I wear with a sturdy vest - but that defeats the object of wearing a nice breezy shirt dress on a sunny day ...Sad but they are a good option with leggings I agree.

sebsmummy1 · 29/04/2015 11:37

Ok just taken a photo. I have a stone left to lose, lost half a stone already, so do not judge me too harshly. Teal wool dress, scarf, leggings, trainers.

What summer dresses can I wear with leggings?
herbaceous · 29/04/2015 11:55

Nice! That's pretty much how I look in my leggings 'get ups'.

As for shirt dresses, bigmouth, I too bust out of them, but just wear a t-shirt underneath. If it's too hot for a t-shirt, I tend to wear knee-length summer frocks/skirts with no leggings anyway.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 29/04/2015 11:55

I think you have a lovely figure and the dress is a great colour - looks good to me. Nice example. Smile

WaftingWilberry · 29/04/2015 12:03

It's a shame there aren't better tights out there that

  • aren't sweaty
  • stay up
  • don't have horrid seams on the toes
  • don't ladder as soon as you look at them.

Till someone invents them I'm sticking with leggings.

If I wore 'well-fitting slacks and a nice blouse' (with pop socks in the winter) I'd look mumsy all right - like my own mum who is in her 80s.

noddyholder · 29/04/2015 12:11

You look great sebs

bigmouthstrikesagain · 29/04/2015 12:12

yep - I think you have to have a very slender clothes horse figure to wear slacks n blouse in a stylish rather than matronly way! Which is great, but for those with a non slender figure other options are available - leggings are just one.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 29/04/2015 12:13

Also being under 25 helps probably with the whole not looking matronly thing Grin
