What summer dresses can I wear with leggings?

Things that don't look weird with them!

I just discovered I love dresses but hate my legs, so don't want to wear them without leggings... The only ones I have are winter dresses so look OK with them, but I'm worried about summer dresses looking 'off' with leggings...

help please?

I like cropped leggings with dresses, it makes me feel like a ballerina Grin

Branleuse · 24/04/2015 10:20

I wear dresses with leggings almost all year round and it looks fine.

workadurka · 24/04/2015 12:51

I remember someone I know wearing those footless tights with stirrupy bits and ballet pumps and a circle skirt in Jersey and they looked fabulous, like an off-duty ballerina.

It was in fashion about 10 years ago, but so were skinny jeans and blazers and they're still acceptable to wear so if you want to why not?

I do think it looks weird to have a summery dress over black leggings though, unless perhaps the dress is predominantly black too. So maybe consider some grey leggings?

And I tend to wear dresses from White Stuff, Dorothy Perkins and I've just discovered an Amazon retailer - Nancy Dee. They have the holy grail of dresses for me - short sleeves!

DoctorLawn · 24/04/2015 13:01

Oh - the Nancy Dee only appear to go up to a 14 - but I'm a 16-18 and the three I've got seem to fit just fine.

bunnie1975 · 24/04/2015 15:01

I have been looking for dresses as I am an odd hourglass shape 16-18, but I really don't want bare legs.

Try Joe Browns they do dresses & long tunics that are designed to go with leggings.

Hopefully above link works

Mistlewoeandwhine · 24/04/2015 15:28

I wear leggings and retro 50's style little dresses and I am HOT darlings.

hazeyjane · 24/04/2015 15:36

Practical, schmactical..

No one is going to die if you were wear leggings with a dress, but it rarely looks stylish

In your opinion, fortunately everyone has different opinions of what constitutes 'style'

BlueberryMuffins76 · 24/04/2015 16:13

I often wear dresses with leggings - navy/grey/black in summer and winter, no one has died from looking at me yet and I've even - shocker! - been complimented on how I look!
Dorothy Perkins is great for dresses Smile

NorksAreMessy · 24/04/2015 18:03

I am on the other end of this, I would love a recommendation for really good leggings.
I wear a lot of tunics, lagenlook and odd clothes (am arty, so I am allowed :) ) and have hill-walker's calves which really should not be out and about.

I could really do with some substantial leggings that don't go see through.

Thank you

Of course they're fine with dresses - unremarkable prehaps but perfectly acceptable. They're just thick tights with no feet.

ShyGirlie · 24/04/2015 18:29

just got a lovely pink and navy dress for FOUR QUID in tesco this morning which i plan to wear with leggings! Grin Grin

HaveTeaWillSurvive · 24/04/2015 18:29

Dress & leggings isn't ok unless you are pregnant.

Phew that's all I can wear when pregnant, everything else is just really uncomfortable.

Riley2015 · 24/04/2015 18:32

I wear leggings and dresses but that's mainly as I'm 5'10 and dresses tend to be too short on me to wear without them!

TeenyTwins · 24/04/2015 19:17

Those looking for decent leggings - American apparel ones are good, if expensive. I only wear them in winter though with tunics ??

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 24/04/2015 19:22

Debenhams have lots of Mantaray dresses reduced which would look good with leggings.

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 24/04/2015 19:25

I think Desigual dresses would also work with leggings.

Anjelika · 24/04/2015 20:23

I have slim legs but suffer with veins. If I didn't wear leggings with dresses in the summer I would be restricted to maxi dresses and trousers. I think you have to be careful about the shape and length of the dress - for me it has to be straight, not flared and short rather than just above the knee. I feel much more confident wearing a dress with leggings than I would showing my veins to the world.

ParkingFred · 24/04/2015 20:25

There has always been a loathing of dresses with leggings on MN.

But I think it can be a good solution if you have bad legs or are very fat.

HappyGirlNow · 24/04/2015 20:37

Um... The OP asked for opinions and opinions she got....

Leggings and dresses look terrible, dated, mumsy, unstylish IN MY OPINION.

And the only thing worse then leggings with dresses would be leggings with Joe Browns dresses - please for the love of God don't go there.

Leggings won't hide big legs - they're skintight and accentuate every line! Be confident and just wear your dresses - I am sure they'll look lovely - as long as they're not Joe Browns Wink

Behooven · 24/04/2015 20:52

No, the op didn't ask for permission - she asked which dresses to wear, entirely different.

It's not a style I use often but I recently bought a nice tunic dress type thing of ebay which is really cute and comfortable with footless tights and flats.
