Plus size chat thread anyone?

MurderOfGoths · 11/04/2015 23:34

Been trying to get my confidence back, and trying to learn what clothes suit my figure, so would love to chat to others in the same boat.

Got a shopping trip planned for next week, to restock my wardrobe and give me a bit of a boost. Mostly going to be going for places like Primark and New Look (am a size 18/20 so just about stand a chance in there) and maybe Yours.

Can't afford too much unfortunately and so much plus size fashion is more expensive.

So how is everyone else? Get anything new lately? Looking at getting anything? What are your favourite items/looks right now?

Let me know what it looks like moonshine

I'm tempted but a bit bigger than you 22-24... I'm sure it will look most fetching.

moonshine · 04/05/2015 18:20

Kewcumber well I can certainly imagine myself twirling into work, perhaps with a tankard or two of lager....

Jumblebee · 04/05/2015 19:38

Harverina I think I'll be going for some new look shoes and they're the only ones in my budget!

Moonshine I can't help you with your search for a longer shirt but I know what you mean about the H&M plus size section. My local H&M has a very small section of boring, dull, baggy clothes in grey, black and brown Confused

When I was on holiday in New York all the H&M's had a really good plus size selection, it was so good being able to buy loads of really nice clothes (and it was so cheap too!)

I wish we had a Forever 21 in Newcastle, I've been to the one in Birmingham and loved it!

Harverina · 04/05/2015 21:58

I forget about Forever21! We have one in Glasgow. Must have a look as it's fairly reasonable.

I used to work in h&m in Glasgow and the plus size section was pretty big. It had a mix of awful stuff and quite nice normal stuff but the shops now only seem to have a tiny section of - yes, grey, black baggy clothes. I must look online though.

I like new look plus range. Some of it is a bit random but they often have lovely tops and I have bought a couple of casual blazers in the last two summers.

moonshine · 09/05/2015 11:06

My H & M order finally arrived and it reminded me why I don't usually buy online from there: because the sizing is erratic and I usually need to size up, sometimes by loads Hmm.

I tried a black wrap dress (think they do them in about 3 colours). The size 20 was too small but was also too fussy - I could see that it would need lots of ironing and adjusting and I'd have to wear a full slip under it.

this dress looked lovely online and I would have worn it as a tunic - but it looks awful on me! Back fat and huge bum ahoy!

this long shirt is actually really nice. I got a size 22 so that it was generous but it's actually just (!) right. I'm just not sure how to wear it though because of the side splits as ideally leggings would be best in summer but then I can imagine unflattering flashes of bum and tum, so will think about it for a week.

this fit and flare dress is probably a keeper. It's really flattering (I got the size 22) and knee length on me (I'm just a tiny shade over 5ft 6in) except it is slightly too tight across the bodice. I will keep it (I know, bad habits die hard) as it will encourage me to lose the 4/5 pounds I have put on recently. Material is pretty thin though, so I will wear a slip, but then that's probably what you would expect for the cost.

Also bought the large size of this cardigan in plum and it's a little too big Hmm but pretty nice so it's a keeper.

And I find myself still frustrated as all I want is two or three work outfits that are comfortable, reasonably stylish, don't cost the earth and don't make me sweat like the proverbial pig. Oh and don't need lots of maintenance.

The search goes on...

birkiekid · 09/05/2015 18:28

moonshine You have really similar taste to me! I would have chosen the same things as you. Pity they didn't all work out.

I like the shirt a lot. Is it quite as long as it looks on the model? I'm only 5'2 so longer backs tend to be below my knees! Not a flattering look on me.

mayfridaycomequickly · 09/05/2015 18:43

Has anyone seen a half decent jersey blazer that would work on a short arsed 16 with 34hh boobs?

I've got one I bought in Primark last year which is comfy and surprisingly smart byt it's going a bit bobbly.

I'm also after 'longer than my droopy belly' tops to go with jeggings if anyone's seen any - again, nork friendly!

birkiekid · 09/05/2015 18:59

Does it have to be jersey? I have a lovely crepe one I got from Red Herring in Debenhams. I'll try to find it and link.

birkiekid · 09/05/2015 19:00

this one

Very flattering. I sized down to a 16, usually wear an 18-20 on top.

mayfridaycomequickly · 09/05/2015 19:08

Ooh - I like that birkie - did you scroll down? The lilac one is 9 quid!

birkiekid · 09/05/2015 20:01

The lilac would be lovely for the summer but 14 is the largest size left - I don't think I'd get away with sizing down another size. If you are a 16 you could definitely wear the 14. It doesn't fasten so it would be fine.

moonshine · 09/05/2015 20:26

birkiekid [great minds ;-)] Yes the shirt is very long - I could almost wear it as a dress as it's not much above my knees and I'm 5ft 6ins (but long body and short legs).

WhenMarnieWasThere · 09/05/2015 21:11

I'm a size 16 (slipping towards an 18 if I don't put the brakes on soon) and an hourglass. I can tell I'm putting on too much weight to get away with as I'm losing my waistline that has always been my saviour up til now. People wouldn't believe me if I said what size I was. I bet they will at the moment now I've put on weight on my middle too.

At weekends and days off I like to wear jeans and find that the TU straight leg, classic rise ones are excellent.

For work (teacher) I like to wear dresses that are gathered loosely in at the waist as I find them flattering.

I'm trying to change my look a bit this year though. I find trousers cooler than leggings in the summer and have bought myself smart black trousers from Peacocks and some sleeveless non-tshirt material tops in different colours from peacocks and primark. I don't really like sleeveless clothes, but do have light short sleeved shrug cardigans in different colours to go with the different tops.

Plus size chat thread anyone?
birkiekid · 09/05/2015 21:18

That's a nice dress Marnie. Where is it from?

HermiioneSnape02 · 10/05/2015 08:51

Can I join in please?

I came on to start a thread asking for blog recommendation for the larger lady.

I'm a 14/16 depending where I shop with big norks and I'm only 5ft 5.

I've finally had a lightbulb moment and have said stuff it to dieting. I'm going to try and dress myself as I am.

I have just started going swimming so I'm still doing exercise.

I like the casual look. I've been browsing for wrap dresses on eBay this morning. I'm going to try and be brave and wear things without leggings or tights.

I like the dress in you're picture too Marnie.

birkiekid · 10/05/2015 13:04

After thinking it over for ages I bought this today

kaliko dress

It isn't my usual style but I really like it and the price was too good to miss.

Not sure how I would style it. I think it is a bit too delicate for the way they have style the model.

Araisaris · 10/05/2015 13:53

That's lovely birkie I've just ordered one - I'm such a sheep Grin

birkiekid · 10/05/2015 13:59

Always happy to help someone spend money Grin It's a lovely dress and the price is amazing. I like the justlastseason site. Got some great bargains from there.

What shoes would you wear with it though?

malteserzz · 10/05/2015 14:05

I've just ordered it too birkie, another sheep !
I quite like it with black tights and boots for this time of year, not sure about warmer weather shoes though

Araisaris · 10/05/2015 14:22

I have a really nice pair of sling back nude kitten heels which I think will go with it. Or what about black suede peep toes?

Harverina · 10/05/2015 14:24

Just spotted a couple of lovely blazers in river island £40 - a light pink colour and a grey one. They didn't have the grey in my size Hmm

They were jersey too

how about these

Araisaris · 10/05/2015 16:04

Those Clarks are good birkie but I always find that an ankle strap makes me look shorter and I'm short enough already!
