Plus size chat thread anyone?

MurderOfGoths · 11/04/2015 23:34

Been trying to get my confidence back, and trying to learn what clothes suit my figure, so would love to chat to others in the same boat.

Got a shopping trip planned for next week, to restock my wardrobe and give me a bit of a boost. Mostly going to be going for places like Primark and New Look (am a size 18/20 so just about stand a chance in there) and maybe Yours.

Can't afford too much unfortunately and so much plus size fashion is more expensive.

So how is everyone else? Get anything new lately? Looking at getting anything? What are your favourite items/looks right now?

Jumble and Birkie - they are quite swingy but slightly more fitted at the boobs/top of back so I stuck with a 20. I usually wear an 18 on the bottom and 20 on top. So Birkie an 18 may be best for you so that it isn't too swingy at the top. I bought the charcoal, navy blue and wine. Think I may get the black too at some point!

I find them pretty short but I am 5ft9. So for me I wouldn't wear them as a dress without leggings - I wear dresses and tights a lot but feel these are just a bit short on me for that.

I bought another patterned swing dress and it was huge. The tops that say oversized have been massive so far for me so I avoid them. Sometimes baggy isn't better! I also bought a blazer and it was tiny so sent it back. So it's trial and error I suppose though the basic dress seems true to size.

Yeah have bought a couple of asos curve things jumble - have a dress coming today from Little Mistress but bought it elsewhere cheaper with codes. I think asos is harder to work out for sizing because it is mostly brands and they all seem quite different in their sizing. Asos overall has nicer stuff than boo hoo but I think boo hoo is ideal for cheap basics. While I try and lose a bit of weight I'm not willing to spend a lot of money on clothes.

Dorothy Perkins have 20% off full priced items today, with free delivery to store.

HIWEB10 gives a further 10% off at checkout Wink

I have several of the bow back dress and keyhole dress styles and find them quite flattering. They're a thick cotton jersey with elastane so quite comfortable and cool for summer.

Jumblebee · 01/05/2015 19:03

Harverina thanks for the advice Smile I'm the same with dresses, I have constant paranoia that a dress will lift up because my bum is so huge and everyone will see my granny knickers Shock

Had a trip to Asda today and they had some lovely stuff in! I tried on this jumpsuit:

m.direct.asda.com/george/women/jumpsuits-playsuits/patterned-jumpsuit/G005047250,default,pd.html (hope the link works!)

The material was lovely and so comfy but it just pulled over my stomach and you could see the "bulge". I would have tried a bigger size but I think the top would have been too big, gaping at the armpits!

Bought some leggings (I find they're quite good quality for the price) and a floaty white top with a long necklace. And a plain black maxi dress that I might wear with a bright cardigan and statement necklace. I'm so awful at putting together outfits though, I have no real sense of what goes together.

Also went to peacocks and bought a nice colourful patterned tea dress. I'd tried it on before but didn't get it and today it was reduced Grin Now to find something to wear over it to cover my hideous arms! AND some patterned soft trousers that I suspect may look like pyjama bottoms, depending on what I wear them with. Spent a small fortune but it's been so long since I've bought anything for myself so I don't feel too bad Smile

Jumblebee · 01/05/2015 19:11

PS Haveyouseenher you have thrown temptation right in my face, curse you!

Off to have a browse on their website Smile

HaveYouSeenHerLately · 01/05/2015 19:33

Happy to help Jumblebee! It's ages since I shopped at DP and I'm astounded by the range of cute dresses Grin I thought they stopped at size 16/18 but they seem to have extended this on many styles Smile

Jumblebee · 01/05/2015 19:44

m.dorothyperkins.com/h5/product?productId=19373956

I LOVE this, but could someone with the same complexion as Casper with red hair pull it off? I think it'd make me look a bit washed out!

I wish Dorothy Perkins did wide fit shoes in a size 9, I have very limited choice in footwear and I'm down to one pair of boots I live in and I've just dug out my 5 year old evans sandals which are now falling apart and making it very difficult to walk! I hate shoe shopping Confused

HaveYouSeenHerLately · 01/05/2015 20:33

I tried that dress on in a different colourway (Heart print placket dress) Grin

I liked it but I preferred some of the other dresses I'd picked out so I reluctantly put it back Wink

I think you could get away with it, maybe with a light gradual tanning moisturiser? Grin Do you like the heart version? It has a mix of navy/sky blue/white - quite fresh for summer Smile

I put 'wide fit' in the search bar and filtered size 9 and got 23 results - mix of pumps and summery sandals mostly, any use?

birkiekid · 01/05/2015 20:55

I'm cursing you DP temptresses. I have fallen in love with this red

It's not in the sale and neckline a little on the high side. What do you think?

Think I'll order the heart print placket dress though. At that price it would almost be rude not to. Wink

HaveYouSeenHerLately · 01/05/2015 21:06

Link not working birkie, but if it's DP all full price stuff is 20% off today (there's also a 10% off code which works on top if you scroll down a bit) Smile

Jumblebee · 01/05/2015 21:11

I searched and found some! The DP in my town isn't the biggest so I think they mustn't stock them there. I'm battling with my need for cheapness and my need for good quality! I need some pumps AND sandals Confused

I haven't seen it, I'll have another browse Smile I'm a disaster when it comes to fake tan so might be best to go with bolder colours so I don't feel so pale.

birkiekid · 01/05/2015 21:12

Weird about the link, it's working for me.

It's a red dress by Fever Fish - some brands are excluded from the discount.

Here's the link again

euro.dorothyperkins.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=13064&catalogId=34070&productId=19252990&categoryId=337657&parent_category_rn=337157

HaveYouSeenHerLately · 01/05/2015 21:54

My phone is having none of your links! I've found the dress though, it's BEAUTIFUL! Thanks

Know what you mean about the neckline, it's a bit hit and miss. At least it's made from cotton/elastane which I find a bit more forgiving.

There's a Fever Fish burgundy polka in the sale for £25 (most sizes) but it has a different neckline/sleeves and lacks the net and belt. Polyester too. 100cm hemline supposedly which is fairly substantial.

Wish there were some reviews Smile

mayfridaycomequickly · 01/05/2015 22:10

I've got a DP dress similar to that red one from a couple of years ago - the neckline was a bit high (i'm 34hh so often look like I've smuggled something) so i cut it! I'm rubbish at sewing but i just took a pair of scissors down the middle, folded the flaps back and put a couple of hap hazzard stitches in - looks fab!

birkiekid · 01/05/2015 22:36

I wish there were some reviews too! It only goes up to an 18 which would probably be fine if there is some stretch. Tempted to order it or the black one with cherry print. I have shoes that would be perfect with a red or black dress in this style.

I'm a 36FF so tend to go for lower neckline usually. I love your DIY approach to solving the high neckline issue mayfriday

Darnley · 02/05/2015 10:04

I love the Box 2 stuff. It's probably aimed at those of us who are slightly older, and it ain't cheap, but is classic and lasts forever.
I also like Yours, but have given up with Evans.
Curvissa and Asos Curve seem to be getting a great deal of my money recently aswell.

MrsPnut · 02/05/2015 19:48

I've been watching this thread because I am so stuck in a rut. I wear tunics and trousers or jeans every day because I hate my massive stomach, but because I am tall, I struggle to buy from most plus size places.

I mostly buy stuff from Next, with the odd bit from Curvissa but I find most things in simply be are made from polyester and cut strangely.

mayfridaycomequickly · 02/05/2015 21:27

Am I missing something? Do Asos not do size 16? Looks like they do 10, 12, 14, 18...

flightywoman · 02/05/2015 21:38

I've bought two 50s style swing dresses this week - both 2nd hand. One is a Collectif and one is a Lindy Bop. I can't wait to try them - I did measure to check they'd fit so I am hopeful that they will be ok. I already have a Praslin dress and recently bought a net petticoat so hopefully they'll all look nice and puffy!

I'm mostly an 18/20 on top and a 20/22 on the bottom, quite hourglassy so the style is one I like on me.

Harverina · 03/05/2015 10:50

My little mistress dress came and is gorgeous Grin

New look do size 9 wide fit shoes jumble. And next too. And yeah, dp.

I am an 8 but tend to need a 9 in new look, especially pumps and flat summer sandals. I need the standard fit though as I find the wide ones really wide. Some of the stores have them too.

Harverina · 03/05/2015 12:27

Mayfriday - the 16 will be out of stock?

birkiekid · 03/05/2015 13:08

Haverina Delighted to hear the dress is a success.

Harverina · 03/05/2015 13:10

Will post pic when I am looking a little more presentable! It is a size 20 and fits well. My only issue is the back is stretchy material at the top and I'm not convinced it's the most flattering look! But I am wearing a gold shrug with it anyway so that doesn't really matter to me I suppose Grin

Araisaris · 04/05/2015 16:54

I've just ordered the magi sculpt jeans from Simply Be. I'll report back when they arrive.

Hope this thread keeps going.

moonshine · 04/05/2015 17:17

Can I join you - Kewcumber has drawn me in with the dirndl Wink. I am hourglass (with big tum Hmm) size 20-who-thinks-they're-an-18-but-is-slipping-into-size-22-despite-being-on-a-diet (bloody hormones and peri-menopause, but that's another thread). I have loads of clothes I can't wear because a) I keep putting on weight and b) I keep buying a size smaller to slim into Confused.

Anyhoo...I look at all shops, forever looking for that 'miracle' outfit. I quite like Violeta by Mango, but find that most of it is too expensive. I also like H&M, although I think their plus size clothes sometimes veer towards the baggy and asymmetric, but am glad to see that they seem to have started offering their 'normal' range in bigger sizes. I have ordered some things and will report back.

I have found some really comfy tapered trousers from M & S (high-waisted is my remit) but can't find a long enough smart work blouse to go with it. Has anyone see one? It has to have at least half sleeves but doesn't have to be too formal as I work in a 'smart casual' environment.
