Plus size chat thread anyone?

Been trying to get my confidence back, and trying to learn what clothes suit my figure, so would love to chat to others in the same boat.

Got a shopping trip planned for next week, to restock my wardrobe and give me a bit of a boost. Mostly going to be going for places like Primark and New Look (am a size 18/20 so just about stand a chance in there) and maybe Yours.

Can't afford too much unfortunately and so much plus size fashion is more expensive.

So how is everyone else? Get anything new lately? Looking at getting anything? What are your favourite items/looks right now?

Hi can I join please.

I am 5ft9 and a size 18/20. More 20 at the moment after a period of comfort eating through stress. Trying to lose a bit of weight again. I am happiest when I am a size 16 but right now I need some clothes that flatter my shape and are comfy!

I recently bought a couple of swig dresses from boo hoo plus - at £12 each they were a bargain. The only issue is they are short on me so the only option is to wear them with leggings, which is fine for the summer.

I think I need a bra intervention too. How do I correctly measure myself?!

I love this video on bra sizing , have recommended this on another thread as well. I don't get paid for recommending . Haha I just love the advice.

Not sure if anyone is coming back But looking for advice on occasion wear.

I am 33, 5ft9 and a size 20 in dresses

Has anyone tried Little Mistress? Any idea what their sizes and lengths are like? Have a wedding in 2 weeks and have a dress that's ok but would like another one.

I have gold stroppy sandals and a gold bag - I also have drop gold earrings that I could wear but could buy new jewellery (and probably would anyway!)

I am semi trendy I suppose! I don't like clingy dresses, prefer skater styles or floaty styles if possible, and just above the knee or sitting on the knee.

Any ideas?!

birkiekid · 29/04/2015 23:47

Haverina, I haven't bought anything from Little Mistress but just looked at their site and thought Wow. They have some beautiful dresses.

Was there anyone in particular you like?

Harverina · 30/04/2015 00:08

Yeah I like this one

I have zero confidence though so not sure I can cope with strapless!

I did a quick internet search and Evans have it too and with current discount codes I can get it cheaper. I also notice on the Evans website that the dress comes with little detachable straps. I would probably wear a little gold shrug so maybe could wear a bra with straps?

Oh not sure what to do!

I have a dress and it's fine but I wish I had something nicer!

birkiekid · 30/04/2015 00:13

I love it! The colour and print are gorgeous. I think you should order it.

A little shrug will stop you feeling too bare.

goodasitgets · 30/04/2015 00:21

Harverina have you looked at lady voluptuous? I have the lyra dress from there and I think it might suit what you're looking for
Link to me in it - it has a sash to tie, quite heavy fabric but not clingy, and little arm sleeves (floaty, not tight)

Harverina · 30/04/2015 00:30

Birki have just ordered it! Will see how it looks. I have gained about a Stone recently due to comfort eating -dd1 became ill suddenly and after not eating for a week I started eating and couldn't stop! So I am very very self conscious and annoyed at myself Hmm

I have looked at lady v and love some of the dresses but they never seem to have anything I like in stock! You look amazing goodas!! Don't think I have the confidence to pull it off - I also think it's a formal
Wedding and my colleagues will be dressed up in formal wear. Is lady v dressy enough do you think?

goodasitgets · 30/04/2015 00:41

I would definitely say so. For me it's what you feel amazing in Smile
There's a load of new lady voluptuous dresses on the site so worth keeping an eye on. I have the Lyra in an 18, and the bellatrix in an 18 too
I also wear a lot of Collectif

Harverina · 30/04/2015 01:18

I have another wedding in June and it's a family wedding where the kids are flower girls. May treat myself to a lady v dress for that - I would want one with a petticoat Smile they are fabulous!

What are their sizes like?

ProcrastinatingPat · 30/04/2015 07:31

So glad I found this thread

I'm 5'6 and an 18 on bottom and 20/22 on top. I'm starting to exercise now and hope to be fit enough to do it in public soon.

Where do I buy decent plus size exercise wear. I have some leggings I bought from simply be but their tops aren't nice.

Misssss · 30/04/2015 13:05

I was just coming to post the same question Pat. I've had s look and Taking Shape seem to have some nice things. I might take a chance and buy some kit on payday tomorrow. Has anyone else had any of their stuff? Otherwise decathlon get go up to 24 in certain styles and I got some fairly decent bits in George recently too.

goodasitgets · 30/04/2015 13:08

Fuller figure fuller bust tried some taking shape stuff, will see if I can find the link

Lady V london and their attached brand lady volup I wear an 18 so pretty standard. I'm actually a 14 in m&s jeans but my boobs make it I need a 16/18

ProcrastinatingPat · 30/04/2015 13:13

Thanks Ladies. Will look in Decathlon and we had a Taking Shape open near us recently.

Jumblebee · 30/04/2015 13:44

Can I please join and ask some of you lovely ladies for some advice? Smile

I'm 5'8 and size 18-20 (more on the 20 side) and I'm stuck in a style rut of wearing black leggings and rotating them with 3 long baggy tops I've had for about 7 years now. Basically I look like a scruff!

I always think 'so what if I'm fat? I can still dress nicely and deserve to feel good about myself' but then in the changing rooms it's a different story. NOTHING looks good. I walked out of the new Look changing rooms in tears a few weeks ago.

I gained back the 4 stone I had lost after having DD and I'm embarrassed about how I look but I really REALLY need a pick me up Hmm

I'm definitely an hourglass shape, but my problem areas are my arms (they are huge; literally the top part of my arms have massive fat overhand compared to my relatively normal sized forearms) and my stomach. My waist goes in but I have 2 "pouches", one under my boobs and a bigger one from my belly button iyswim?

I struggle to find anything that looks good. I find most places that have plus size clothing tend to assume that I'm an apple shape and want baggy tops that nip in at the bottom with elastic. They make me look even bigger Confused I'm also on a minuscule budget so I don't think I can afford any of the nicer shops like Simply Be.

Sorry for going off on a tangent, I'm enjoying reading this thread and all the blogs people have linked. All those bloggers look so confident and amazing, I wish I could look like that!!

Harverina · 30/04/2015 22:39

Jumble I could have written your post plus we sound like we are a similar size/height.

Have you looked at boohoo plus range? Some of it is very trendy and there are lots of cropped tops! But I recently bought some £12 basic dresses which I wear with leggings and pumps. They ate too short for tights for me but with leggings I think they look quite nice.

here they are

I wish the neck was a little lower but they are great value. Here is a pic of me today with one on.

Plus size chat thread anyone?
birkiekid · 30/04/2015 23:16

I like those Asos dresses Haverina. What is the sizing like? I'm 18-20 on top, 16 bottom but only 5'2.
Are they very swingy?

Jumblebee · 01/05/2015 09:20

Haverina that dress looks great on you Grin what colours did you get it in? What are the sizes like? Sorry for all the questions! I don't often shop online because I never know if they'll fit/look good.

I always just assumed boohoo was for the slimmer or more fashionable people! Think I may order one of those dresses though Smile

Have you ever bought anything from Asos curve? I've had a browse and the clothes look really nice but then I get stuck in the "but it would never look good on me" mind frame.

mayfridaycomequickly · 01/05/2015 09:56

I never order online either jumble but I'm weirdly tempted by the boohoo sale!

Kewcumber · 01/05/2015 11:01

Love this thread.

I'm 22/24 and being 5'9" (and poor) I struggle with swimsuits as apparently anyone over a size 20 is short Hmm

Will look at Taking shape for the high bottoms someone mentioned.

Kewcumber · 01/05/2015 11:03

Oh my word Taking Shape shop is near me...

Harverina · 01/05/2015 11:09

Jumble and Birkie - they are quite swingy but slightly more fitted at the boobs/top of back so I stuck with a 20. I usually wear an 18 on the bottom and 20 on top. So Birkie an 18 may be best for you so that it isn't too swingy at the top. I bought the charcoal, navy blue and wine. Think I may get the black too at some point!

I find them pretty short but I am 5ft9. So for me I wouldn't wear them as a dress without leggings - I wear dresses and tights a lot but feel these are just a bit short on me for that.

I bought another patterned swing dress and it was huge. The tops that say oversized have been massive so far for me so I avoid them. Sometimes baggy isn't better!

Yeah have bought a couple of asos curve things jumble - have a dress coming today from Little Mistress but bought it elsewhere cheaper with codes. I think asos is harder to work out for sizing because it is mostly brands and they all seem quite different in their sizing. Asos overall has nicer stuff than boo hoo but I think boo hoo is ideal for cheap basics.
