Remember our chats??

Our SOTD (scent of the day)?

Is there a thread I've missed Shock

If not, lets take it up here :)

SOTD an unknown sample from my perfume drawer, woodsy and irisy, am baffled but enjoying it!

Canny:I'd be interested in Brin de reglisse, black sea, clair de musc and if you have the etats "la fin du monde" or " like this"? Which nose samples have you?Do you fancy any of mine?

leedy · 09/10/2014 20:08

I have a FB of Like This, though I'm not sure how/what I'd decant it into if anyone wants a go.

ToysRLuv · 09/10/2014 20:16

You can buy little bottles/containers from ebay and you euther sray straight into them (5 or 10 ml bottles) or use a little funnel to spray into the smaller ones (1-2ml). If you were interested in any if my things, I could send you a spray bottle to decant to, for swapsies. However, you're in Ireland, right? There is a chance that perfumes could get destroyed by customs in transit, although some at least do get through..

bewleysisters · 09/10/2014 20:48

SOTD: Agarwoud (Heeley). A woody rose - another Nose sample. Am late convert to rose-based perfume - but like the Acqua di Parma Rosa Nobile better I think.

Naicecuppatea · 09/10/2014 20:48

Perfume lovers, I'm barging in on your thread without feeling qualified to be here! Can you help a newbie to scent please? I am looking for an autumn/winter perfume please that is not horrendously expensive. Hope you can help, thanks!

niminypiminy · 09/10/2014 20:54

Not wearing a SOTD today as have a terrible cold and it would be wasted. But am going through a bit of an obsession with Heely L'Amandiere at the moment. My sample is more than half gone, and I really, really cannot afford a FB . I've been testing Shay & Blue Almond Cucumber in the hope that it would be a good substitute, but alas, it's nothing like as nice. Too cucumbery, and doesn't have the lovely spring feeling that L'Amandiere has. Rather flat and boring. I'm also liking Farnesiana, which is a complete comfort scent -- like eating battenburg cake on a sunny day in a cafe with a vase of mimosa on the table.

thecatfromjapan · 09/10/2014 21:11

My TK Maxx perfume arrived utterly and completely broken!!!!!

No bubble-wrap!

Shock Angry
ToysRLuv · 09/10/2014 21:14

Wow. That sucks, cat. Complain! Mine was in a ridiculously thick package..

thecatfromjapan · 09/10/2014 21:23

Naicecuppatea - I'm sure you are very welcome (I'm a newbie here, so I'm not sure that I qualify to extend hellos and welcomes but it seems weird not to!).

What a great question - just what I'm looking for too!

I love Mitsouko in the cold - it's so warm and deep (apparently there are "wood" notes in it - and I think that is what the "depth" comes from). However, it is not modern, so may not be the thing you are after. I used to love pulling out Jo Malone "Nutmeg and Ginger" in the darker days. I sprayed on myself and my clothing and found it lasted well. Again, that is not as "of the moment" as it was.

At the moment, I am searching. I have a bottle of "Bleu" by Paul and Joe, and I am wondering if that is going to be good in the cold, but I think that I'd like something with a bit of incense and mystery ...

I'm hoping lots of other people will be along with their suggestions ...

thecatfromjapan · 09/10/2014 21:25

Toysrluv- I have to admit, I am really quite sad.

It was "Poivre Piquant". I had hoped it was going to be an ideal companion throughout the lengthening nights. Sad

canny1234 · 09/10/2014 23:33

Did you get the same dispatcher as me Thecatfromjapan?
It is upsetting as its such a waste of a perfume that could have been loved.

Niminy that particular perfume has been on my 'to try' list for a while. The samples ordered from the Heeley website work out better value than ordering from a online shop. They're also solid glass vials with a good spray mechanism.

Naicecuppatea I can recommend Jo Malone's Dark amber and Ginger lily. This manages go be both fresh, warm and rich all at the same time. But sadly only comes in 100ml bottles and hence isn't cheap.Yves Rocher perfumes are very good and the Amber one is gorgeous and reasonable as is the Tendre Jasmin ( which I wear in cooler weather).

All Beauty has lots of reasonably priced perfumes online as well.

Toysrluv I'm happy to swop for some of yours.I will list the Nose samples tomorrow and check out the Etats as well.

niminypiminy · 10/10/2014 10:24

Yes, my samples came from the Heeley web site, and they are very good indeed. I might just have to buy another one when it's finished.

Naicecuppatea I like Shay&Blue Suffolk Lavendar which is actually quite a dark, rich scent, not old-lady lavendar at all -- their whole line is available as samples and the bottles are cheap for niche perfumes. Atropa Belladona is another one of theirs that might be good as a winter scent.

ToysRLuv · 10/10/2014 10:33

For winter I like orientals, but hard to recommend anything exactly without more information.. For anyone jyst getting into perfumes, I would recommend frequent trips to a boots/local department store. Try lots of stuff and find out your preferences, e.g. do you like florals, citrus, orientals, etc? Then narrow it down. www.fragrantica.com is a fab resource.

leedy · 10/10/2014 10:37

Toysrluv, yes, I'm in Ireland, though I'm willing to give it a try if you send me a bottle, can send in a padded envelope with much bubble wrap (or are they likely to be blown up as some kind of potential contraband???). I love Like This, it's a great cosy Autumn scent. Could swap for some of the Frederic Malle En Passant?

SOTD: Jo Malone Black Cedarwood & Juniper, which is very woody/dark/spicy. Kind of wet forest, in a good way? Different from the more gin and tonic juniper in the Penhaligon Juniper Sling.

ToysRLuv · 10/10/2014 10:54

Cool, leedy! That suits.

Nothing will blow up Grin , but, sometimes overzealous customs get hold if it, especially if it's a big bottle/package. How about we try with smallish 3-4ml spray bottles first? They don't need much padding (in fact, padding will arouse suspicion), just a normal (bubble) envelope. Make sure it is the size of a letter and will just be put through a letter box. Put stamp(s) on it and put into mailbox. You don't need to go to the post office, as they might ask you what's in the letter. PM me your address and get onto it :)

SOTD: Fancy Nights. Was craving some patch just now..

ToysRLuv · 10/10/2014 10:56

Oh dear. It was supposed to say: "and I will get onto it" Blush

leedy · 10/10/2014 11:19

:)

shins · 10/10/2014 13:59

SOTD: 31 Rue Cambon by Chanel. It is predictably radiantly beautiful but a bit boring after a while. Slightly hungover today and a bit queasy at the monster sillage. Last of my sample and it'll most likely be the end of Chanel sampling for free - I was in BTs yesterday and they definitely seem to have got rid of them Sad. wiltingfast I tried to blag a Hermes sample but was firmly told that they didn't do them, how did you swing it? I consoled myself by drenching myself in pure parfum of Caleche, which they have by the tills.

I'd love to swap a few of those samples, I'll list mine this evening.

thecatfromjapan · 10/10/2014 17:53

Radiant and boring it's be the complete opposite of what mademoiselle herself was like.Grin I often think she was probably like no 19 - all angles and edges but also intriguing and elegant.
That said, I really do like the exclusifs a lot more than the main line - probably because they are more polished and less difficult.

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 10/10/2014 20:18

Continuing the Exclusifs theme I wore Sycomore today. Love it's paperiness, 'specially in this ghastly weather.

I am rubbish at bagging samples, and want tips too!

When I bought a FB of Coromandel the Chanel sa (very reluctantly!) gave me the Sycomore sample 'for my 'usband to try.' Obviously I kept that baby for myself. Wink

ToysRLuv · 10/10/2014 22:07

I've never gotten any free samples, but maybe sales assistants can tell that I'm not going to buy an fb from them (ridiculous pricing)..

No that into the Chanels, I just realised. Quite like Cristalle and no19, Coromandel is ok, too, but that's about it. More of a Dior, YSL (from the big brands) girl..

wiltingfast · 10/10/2014 22:57

God I don't know, have a nice bag?! Grin I just rolled up, hung around and asked for a sample, they didn't have the one I wanted but gave me 4 pamplmousse rose instead. Which I didn't like and gave away to someone else on these thread Grin Think you just get lucky sometimes. If an SA can talk the talk and recognises a fellow perfume lover yay hey! Such a pity about the chanels in BTS the sa there was a Star sigh

Have never decanted but am willing to learn! Too tired to go examine my perfume drawer but will def do some listing tomorrow... Sotd was 28 (am on a total bender with it) Blush

OP posts:
ToysRLuv · 10/10/2014 23:16

I look a bit too punky, probably.. Definitely not their target demographic, and am rubbish at hiding it. Also look younger than I am. Sales assistants typically just want to douse me with horrible things. I found that most of them don't know very much at all (and don't seem to care much either), but might have just been unlucky there.

canny1234 · 13/10/2014 11:08

SOTD is La Fille de Berlin.I wore Tendre Jasmin by Yves Rocher over the weekend. This is beautiful in Autumn and not just a Jasmin but a golden Mimosa/Acacia thats suited to the warm tones of Autumn.

leedy · 13/10/2014 11:18

SOTD Acqua di Parma Mandorlo di Sicilia. Got this as a sample and ended up buying a full bottle even though on paper this would definitely not be a "me" sort of scent, it's rather sweet and smells a bit like cake. Manages to do that while being quite fresh and not cloying at all, though.
