I am very excited.

Any tips, products I should buy?

Hmmm I think that statement tells me to forget about putting a fringe back in

Had my hair permed for about 8 years - loved it - you never had to do anything to it - just wash - scrunch and go

Nombrechanger · 22/01/2014 21:51

I had my hair permed in the nineties...

I asked for this:

my hair is naturally curly so this thread scares me... be careful what you wish for

Nombrechanger · 22/01/2014 21:51

But, joy of joys, I got this:

Be afraid, be very afraid.....

I dont know why I'm laughing though, I've had my fair share of perm related disasters. My mum did a home perm on my relentlessly poker straight hair when I was about 14. My hair remained poker straight, not the merest sign of a curl, but smelled of bad eggs every time it got wet. When it rained everyone at school kept looking at meBlush Thanks mum.

MrsBungle · 22/01/2014 22:00

Oh I'm nervous for you honey! Those photos look like large hot curlers - not a perm. I think the rollers for a perm have to be quite small for it to 'take'. I had long hair that was permed in the 90's. As perms go, it was quite nice but not lovely and soft and floaty like those pics, more a longer nicer Brian May!

HoneyDragon · 22/01/2014 22:06

Is this more realistic then?

I looked like Ronald McDonald with a perm.

MrsBungle · 22/01/2014 23:15

Yes I think that's more realistic. I quite like it.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 23/01/2014 07:31

God, I'd love a perm! Don't have the guts though!

I still have fond memories of my 80's perms, no idea why because they all looked like shit but there's something that makes me feel quite nostalgic about a perm.

Even the word doesn't feel like it belongs in this centuryGrin

Good luck HoneyDragon

Norudeshitrequired · 23/01/2014 07:35

I have naturally curly hair, a bit like the picture posted at 22.06, but I spend my life straightening it.
Why oh why are we never happy with our hair au natrel?

Nomorepeppapig · 23/01/2014 07:39

Be careful! I got my hair permed a few years ago and it was awful! I asked for something very much like what you want, soft big curls. But it just look so bad! The hairdresser was so sure it would turn out ok as well.
Never ever doing that again!
Good luck!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 23/01/2014 10:23

I am thinking maybe it isn't a perm I want as I want large waves Confused.

Xoticdreamz · 23/01/2014 12:37

I never had a perm Angry . Pretty much everyone else in my class did . If you can get bouncy big curls that last this one might be a perming.

HoneyDragon · 23/01/2014 15:00

One more sleep to go! Yay!

This is an actual perm. And the fringe is done. I like that.

Its nigh on impossible to get big bouncy curls with a perm. As soon as you start to go bigger with the perm rods, the result is more of a loose S shape.

HoneyDragon · 23/01/2014 15:30

Loose fine

Spiral baaaaad.

HelloBoys · 23/01/2014 15:36

I'd be careful.

I had 2 perms when I was 15 and I think 18 - both were on virgin hair or virgin-ish hair. oh I had a third. My 2nd was Emily Lloyd Style in Wish You Were Here. 1st was Kylie Bubble perm a la I Should be so Yucky. Grin

another perm in my 20's disaster. I'm naturally curly (as child) and slightly wavy hair and perms look natural on me.

on another note - as I tried and failed to curl a friend's hair with those foam rollers, what curls hair well - her hair is afro (she's mixed race) - is a Babyliss Tong good or something else?

HelloBoys · 23/01/2014 15:37

Honey - I had a Charlene perm and for some reason I don't look dissimilar to her (how she was back then).

I got calls of "Charlene" as catcalls from men Hmm and my German tutor (female) was convinced I was the dead ringer for Kylie. Shock

IamInvisible · 23/01/2014 15:57

I had a lovely spiral perm back in 1993. It was like that picture from 21:28 last night. I had it when I met DH, he'd quite like me to get it done again, but I reckon I'd end up looking like my nan now.

cocodevert · 23/01/2014 16:00

Does this mean that curly hair is finally back in? Hooray! Have spent a lifetime saying no thanks to hairdressers who want to straighten mine. (I look weird with straight hair). Good luck with the perm OP. definitely don't get a fringe - looks mad with curls (unless it is straight at top & wavy lower).

plum100 · 23/01/2014 17:53

Cant wait till tmrw - what time shall we log on for a viewing Honeydragon?

HoneyDragon · 23/01/2014 18:19

I shall update mid morning with what us happening Grin

Hopefully it's pretty much guaranteed to be an entertaining finish for a thread as

A. It could be lovely and an inspiration

Or more likely

B. My almost superpower like ability to attract pointless and unnecessary mishap could result in hilarity and mocking for all, followed by a buzzcut.
