When I was in college, i did a media course that specialized in audio, however, we still had to write essays and the like on actual printed media. One of my essays was a dissection of women's magazines/fashion magazines and how they are racist and perpetually whitewash everything. Of course, I was awarded a distinction for my razor sharp insight.Wink

santamarianovella · 01/08/2013 18:09

mig you are right,i think pale gloomy looking models are in demand atm,
prada's women have an air of androgynous IMO! and i think thats the kind of look she is after, even her menswear collection is a bit gender confused Grin,

LeFreakCestChic · 01/08/2013 18:49

shop, you are absolutely right re motherhood being boring sometimes. At the beginning of each school holiday I swear to myself that I will bake, do arts & crafts ( which I loathe), be patient, be fun, entertaining etc with the DC as term time is so busy. This lasts about 3 days and then I'm bored and longing to get back to work for a break.
It's exactly a room of one's own filled with beautiful clothes that all mothers need.

Am still agonising over these me & em dresses- is it daft to buy summer dresses at this stage?

MarshaBrady · 01/08/2013 19:17

LeFreak which ones? Sorry can't find the links.

I'm wondering about some more J Crew shorts. Foxy did you order some? Which length did you get?

mignonette · 01/08/2013 19:31

LeFreak I tend not to pay too much attention to what is Summer and what is Winter. Obviously that doesn't mean I swan around in strapless sundresses in darkest Winter but I happily pull on a pair of woollen tights under a summer dress/skirt and layer on the knits. I think thinner dresses can look quite charming with bulky Winter separates- It's that 'Land Girl' look that British women can do so well, all chapped legs or wrinkled socks, wellies, thick knits, Harris Tweed and Tea Dresses!

One I would love to study that. Fascinating area of study and far more impactful upon our every day lives than some people think.

OneLittleLady · 01/08/2013 19:44

I too never pay attention to whether something's meant for summer or winter. I wear more layers in winter and less in summer. Everything in my wardrobe gets worn when I feel like it rather than when the seasons dictate. I have drawers full of layering tees and thick woolly tights and cardigans to layer up with summer dresses and skirts when it's colder. It's mostly footwear that is dependent on the weather

InMyShreddies · 01/08/2013 20:01

I agree that Laura Ashley is good for finding gems! When I worked I got several pairs of lovely tailored trousers from there, although that was when bootcut was in, it seems to be taking a lot of high st shops a while to catch up with cigarette leg, apart from Gap, Banana Republic and J Crew... I was in Next today looking for an outfit for my toddler boy and was marvelling that they still stock row after row of polyester bootcut variations on a black trouser! Confused

I mostly love Laura Ashley for the house stuff, that opulent look I just love, although I wish I were more minimalist and good at cleaning.

I got an email from Aubin and Wills re their sample sale running over the next 3 days if anyone is interested - from my longtime lurking I think Shop you are a fan?

shopafrolic · 01/08/2013 20:01

A lot of people bought the 4" J Crews on other threads Marsha although I seem to remember some saying they wish they'd gone shorter for home wear......
Am looking at August Vogue while DH has a work thing in London. Love the shots of Nicole Kidman for Jimmy Choo.

Is a bit weird being such short notice, but I'd say there will be some great bargains.

I bought a bubblegum pink silk tee in their final sale, £79 down to £23 iirc and perfect summer top.

Drywhiteplease · 01/08/2013 20:14

Evening all!
Mig date milkshake Shock love dates!!
Marsha no nail varnish...ever? Shock
QueenC when you say "Gromitt" are you talking Wallace and? Love the blue dress. Reiss lace a bit meh. Still think V Westwood are my favs and the green full length.
Shop nooooooo.....you sound like a fab Mum, god we all think we're crap sometimes, comes with the job, but honestly bet he loved it! The zoo....( go into classics and find my all time fav thread "what to wear to the zoo" brilliant)

I'm Shock again at S Cowell fathering a child! Poor kid!

MarshaBrady · 01/08/2013 20:20

I know Dry Grin I feel I have admitted something very out there!

That sample sale looks fab Shreddies.

shopafrolic · 01/08/2013 20:22

To be fair DS went to bed saying "nice time at zoo". I asked him what his favourite animal was ....."giraffe". What does a giraffe have? "A really long tail"
I guess the huge long neck passed him by! Confused
I love everything about this

I'm much more excited about AW looking through Vogue.....

mignonette · 01/08/2013 20:30

Yes to aghast @ the Cowell situation, Dry. Can you imagine a child and black toilet paper (Cowell apparently uses this.) Am LMAO at the thought of this notoriously controlling man facing down a furious recalcitrant two year old. Suppose he will buy the kid a separate mansion or town or something to live in. Or it's own country.....

Love the description of that bubblegum T, InMy. I sometimes drive to the silk weavers mill outlet shops in East Anglia to buy offcuts/ lengths of fabric. One of them weaves fabric for Paul Smith (The famous stripes) and they have all woven cloth for some of our state occasions-wedding dresses included. I has some pillow cases run up by my Mother and have plenty of scarves made from amazing fabrics that I would choke at paying retail for.

I need some new sleep tops to partner my PJ bottoms. I rarely wear the matching tops available to buy with. I prefer T shirts but nice soft ones long or short sleeves and preferably woven in a tubular shape so as not to have the seams twisting around my torso! I like soft natural shades-stone, apricot, olive greens, dusky pinks and blues, greys etc. I do wear night T's in the day and vice versa.

OneLittleLady · 01/08/2013 20:34

So, ladies, if you are large of hip with a huge c-section overhang like I am, what do you reckon is the best shape skirt to wear?

MarshaBrady · 01/08/2013 20:34

I'm more excited now too. Have a plan for Saturday morning now Shop related to A/W will pm.

shopafrolic · 01/08/2013 20:42

You know it's not this Saturday though right? Saturday 24th.

MarshaBrady · 01/08/2013 20:46
