Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

Should add: teta, which R and G did you order?

and coffeinbed: I love eau de merveilles too. I practically informed dh that this would be an ideal Christmas present but, alas, was disappointed.

They stopped making Coeur de Vetivert as well, I was just about to buy some.
Never mind.

Teta, Calyx is lovely, I went thorough a lot of it. It reminded me of Nobillo Sauvignon Blanc. It's good to see it back. Hope it hasn't changed much.
Have you tried YSL in love Again?

I think I need to try Calyx, it sounds like a good one for spring (if spring ever arrives!)

SOTD is L'Erbolario Meharees, definitely need a FB of this when my sample runs out, tis wonderful stuff.

Orange,Citron and Rose rather predictably.I love fresh citrusy and rosy perfumes.I was really disappointed in La Rose from Miller Harris because it didn't smell rosy at all but was rather sophisticated(which just isn't me).
I am so pleased Calyx is back.It was one of those perfumes that everyone asked about.I just loved the apple/grapefruit vibe of it.I've never tried In Love Again. What does it smell like?
Thecatfromjapan my dh buys me and teenage dd horrible perfumes.I think he just goes to duty free and lets the assistant pick one.Mind you he also gets vouchers for department stores in Asia and comes back with strange whitening creams from Clinique (when I've asked him to get something specific).

Sympathies thecatfromjapan, I lost out by stupidly not buying nicolai's *Le Temps D'une Fete" even though I knew it was on the endangered list I dithered and now it is gone :(

Better not make same mistake with the m&s sale...

I've been unable to track down any more of my favourite old-style Ivoire for a reasonable price. Sad I've got half a bottle left. The new one is a crowd pleasing shadow of its former self. Perhaps I'll wear it today.

I've found a little shop which sells Miller Harris perfumes near me. What do you all recommend I have a sniff of, I haven't tried any of them before. I quite fancy trying Fleur Oriental after looking at them on Fragrantica, but wondered if there were any particularly special ones?

Wearing Coromandel today with a lovely fluffy sweater dress and wooly tights as the weather is just so cold, wet and miserable.

Apatite1 · 15/02/2014 10:47

I'll join you in Coromandel today cosikitty.

OOOh, meant to mention that Escentual have 25% off everything on their website this weekend if anyone was intending to purchase any new perfumes, they have a really good range and quite a lot of niche brands too. I am tempted by the Serge lutens, either Feminite du bois or fleur de oranger, or I also really like Iris Nobile.

Cosikitty I really like L'Air de Rien, it's a bit dirty but I quite enjoy that in a perfume Grin

Wearing Habanita EDP today, although I had to go easy on the trigger as we've been to the cinema and it's not a shy fragrance!

Decided to go for Annick Goutal Rose Splendide with 25% off as haven't been able to find this in the shops. It is a rose soliiflore which is lovely and fresh. I have a desire to sleep surround by the scent of roses so am planning to wear this as a bed time fragrance after bathing with a lovely rose bubble bath I have.

That sounds very tempting. I'm dithering about whether to get Serge Lutens' Fleurs d'Oranger, which I love.

Smile I'm feeling really happy for you, cosikitty, and thinking of you going to sleep in a bed of roses.

I'm wearing M and S/Lynne Harris "La Poudree" and loving it. £12.50. It is very soft and cozy. I'm finding it's turning me into a warm and laid-back mummy. Grin

Well, have found myself at a loose end in london and thought I'd go and see Les Senteurs but am now sitting in a coffee shop across the road feeling a bit intimidated! Daft I know. Will finish coffee and march in... Soon...

Tell them that you like X and Y and let them come up with ideas. Or say that your favorite ingredient is Z and ask them for examples! You are so knowledgeful on this thread that you'll just enjoy a chat and a sniff with like-minded people! If you want to be really geeky, write the names of of the perfumes you sample on the strips and pack the strips between the leaves of a paperback book. You'll have a fragrant book and great memories.

I passed my favorite perfumery the other day and asked to sample their new irises. Was really impressed that they had Aedes de Venustas and Ramon Monegal in stock... Enjoyed both but the first is too much like Zagorsk and the second too subtle and warm. A superbly enjoyable 3-min pit stop nevertheless!

Hah, well I did go in but was rather tongue tied and tried only Portrait of a Lady, En Passant and Angeliques sous la Pluie. I did come away with a smaple of the latter which was rather wonderful, like entering a wet fragrant greehouse. Lasted ages on me too although it did go very soft after a bit. I did enjoy it though. Didn't find the assistant that forthcoming really when I tried to put some chat on her. Rather suspect she knew there would be no purchase from me alas. Not for lack of wanting I might say.

It might have been a better idea to ask them for sample irises FF although I knew I wanted to try Frederic Malle as I don't know anywhere stocking him here. Was hoping to get more than one sample but at least I got one!

Enjoying wearing Agent Provocateur Maitresse today. Very soft and powdery, something in the background that I can't quite work out that's just a little bit sexy I just don't know what it is!

Anyone know Burgin's Perfumery in York?

Report
florascotia · 19/02/2014 19:46

Wilting Don't blame yourself. As someone who find most cosmetics counter and perfumery ladies totally scary, I really sympathise.

I hoped I would like Angeliques Sous La Pluie - I love real-life angelica and similar plants such as dill - but I found it rather sickly towards the end. I prefer golden oldie Guerlain's Apres L'Ondee. Same concept, rather different execution.

Report
FrugalFashionista · 19/02/2014 19:50

Well done Wilting! Salespersons can be daunting, I often prefer being left alone - can't sniff and talk at the same time! But the more you know about perfume, the more you will be able to talk about them. You'll also soon realize that many SAs know much less tha you do - I once went to a blind sniffing event with a Guerlain rep and iirc she didn't recognize really basic notes like patchouli or oakmoss. (You don't need to of course to enjoy perfume but she did this for her living!)

This thread is almost full so I'll set up a new one before someone loses a post!
