Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

OP posts:

I haven't ordered new samples in ages, but decided to buy some from Maison Kurkdjian to celebrate the new year (also available at Neroli). His Lumiere Noire pour Femme (rose, iirc) and Amyris pour Femme (iris) caught my attention a while ago. They would be fantastic and unique everyday scents - need to break out of the Chanel 5 EDP rut Grin

FrugalFashionista · 02/01/2014 11:26

The Tauer discovery set is a thing of beauty! The Tauers are pretty heavy-hitting, not everyone loves them, so you might want to start with the small sample box, but if you are into woody and oriental perfumes, or very original roses, you absolutely need to try them. I'd love to try Phi and Ingrid, but getting them delivered to Italy is costly/impossible, and they have not been launched here yet afaik Sad

SinisterSal · 02/01/2014 11:37

Frugal, it's free delivery to Ireland at the mo, it might be worth checking out again for you.

Hello all, new person here. I'm trying to find a new perfume - it's been so long since I bothered, I don't actually know what I like. For years I've bought all my perfume in Jo Malone (Pomegranate Noir usually) but I want something that says me.

Today I went to Debenhams and think I liked Michael Korrs Glam Jasmine and Issey Miyake eau d'Issey. In Boots the only one I liked was Rive Gauche. They are SO expensive though, I'm scared of spending all my Christmas money on something I will hate and I want to wear it every day and feel gorgeous :)

I'm going to read this thread and learn.

FrugalFashionista · 02/01/2014 18:23

Awks, welcome, do search eBay for potential bargain bottles, Rive Gauche should be easy to find. I just gave a new loving home to a small bottle of No. 5, someone's unwanted Christmas present... Iirc Palisander by Comme des Garcons is very close to Pomegranate Noir.

WantToShop · 02/01/2014 18:29

Treated myself to a bottle of spicebomb today - thanks scentsisters - a year ago I'd never have imagined I'd be wearing men's scents - but I can't get enough of them these days!

wiltingfast · 02/01/2014 18:42

Am currently in a chanel rut too! I find myself reaching for coromandel or no 19 most mornings [biggrin], my cuir de russie stash is gone, boo hoo.

Really need to replenish my sample selection but I've a yen for a big bottle. Mind you that's what I had in mind before I found these threads, met you lot and became endlessly distracted with all the possibilities!

florascotia · 02/01/2014 19:43

Frugal, you are so right that Tauers are love or loathe. I am the latter. I really cannot stand them. I just think emperor's new clothes.... or worse. However, although I do love classic scents (especially Guerlains - I love Vol de Nuit,Mrs S ), I'm not averse to some modern ones. For example, for cold wintry days when I want to concentrate, modern Eau de l'hermine takes some beating. It's chilly, ethereal, transparent ...

Awks - one of the really good things about new niche and older classic scents is that you can almost always purchase cheap samples first. Others here - such as Frugal - may have a comprehensive list of suppliers, but, off the top of my head, try Googling Les Scenteurs or Scents and Sensibility in the UK, Alla Violetta (see posts above) in Italy, Neroli in Hungary, Ausliebezumduft in Germany. And there are others...

Awks · 02/01/2014 20:32

Florascotia - thanks I've just ordered a sample of PHI Une rose de kandahar as that sounded the one I'd like most. Am excited now :)

FrugalFashionista · 03/01/2014 22:22

Awks - how exciting! Do let us know what Phi smells like!

Flora your style is just more subtle and sophisticated... I like Tauers because I love the bold and brash 1980s vibe - I also think he has brought something genuinely new to perfumery. (Slumberhouse feels a bit like that too.)

Wilting I can't help loving Chanels - to me, your favorites are some of the most nuanced and interesting perfumes out there, and certainly a perfect around-the-year wardrobe!

WTS Spicebomb is great! I love wearing masculines... And all ladies should try Habit Rouge - might be much easier to wear than Shalimar or Mitsouko.

Still stuck in a rut, wearing No. 5.

CointreauVersial · 03/01/2014 22:31

I'm actually on the fence Tauer-wise. Some I love (LADDM, Lonestar Memories), some I can take or leave (Vetiver Dance), and some make me absolutely heave (Orange Star, Reverie au Jardin)!

goodasitgets · 03/01/2014 23:06

Vivienne westwood - naughty Alice for me today. I like this but I'm not sure why as it's nothing like my usual mega fresh/sharp citrus scents!

LondonNinja · 03/01/2014 23:13

I used to wear C'est la Vie when I was much younger. It was discontinued years ago but I'd like something similar if poss. Who knows, my taste has probably changed (favourite is Songes by Annick Goutal), but I'd love to smell something that takes me back to my youth!

OneLittleLady · 03/01/2014 23:18

I can't seem to get into the habit of wearing any scent lately. I have plenty to choose from and I'm not bored of them, i just seem to have fallen out of the habit of wearing any. I kind of feel overwhelmed by how much I have to choose from if I'm honest Confused

Apatite1 · 03/01/2014 23:19

SOTD: Diptyque Eau Duelle

LittleBabyPigsus · 04/01/2014 02:40

I can't get along with classic Chanel at all - think it's the aldehydes? Chanel No 5 smells like rotting flowers on me Hmm

I realise classic Guerlain has just as much cachet, and it's quite nice to wear more underrated perfumes (or at least underrated in my age group), but it annoys me that I can't get on with such an important part of fragrance history. I don't seem to be much of a floral person in general though?

FrugalFashionista · 04/01/2014 08:17

LittleBaby I didn't get Chanel 5 for the longest time. I had to learn to love aldehydes, much like I learned to like green olives or gorgonzola, or Stravinky, or chypres and white flowers Grin

OLL perfume-free periods are fine, I often have them, you need to let your senses rest.

Wearing Chanel No. 5 once again.

CointreauVersial · 04/01/2014 12:10

Ninfeo Mio today, because I forgot to put any perfume on before I left the house, and that's what I found lurking in my handbag!

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/01/2014 12:13

Eau Jeune Eau Fraiche today. I'm all class me. Parfum du Supermarche. Grin

(Can't do accents on the laptop)

Fuckitthatlldo · 04/01/2014 14:17

SOTD: Zibermann Oriental Adler.

Found it in my mums sample box after she bought a full bottle of Alamut by Lorenzo Villoresi and was sent a load of freebies.

An oriental with a stack load of patchouli - it has the same spiky coca cola vibe as Estee Lauder's Youth Dew. Hmm... nah, not for me.

Apatite1 · 04/01/2014 14:39

SOTD: Amouage Memoir Woman. Good one for the weather.

Awks · 04/01/2014 15:30

The Phi sample came. At first i thought it was gorgeous but now it's dried to a really musky rose. It's not horrible and I will use the sample but I don't think I'd buy a bottle. It came with a free sample of l'eau de hermine which smelled gorgeous an hour ago but now I can't smell it. I thought ermine were rodents though so not sure I want to smell like something so inspired.

I'm excited about all this now, so thanks :)

florascotia · 04/01/2014 16:17

Gosh, thanks, Frugal - that's a very kind comment Thanks

Awks ermine (stoats) are indeed sharp-toothed beasties, related to mink and pine-marten rather than rodents. Their fur was/ is (alas) used in royal and noble robes. I felt sure that Lostmarc'h - the perfume company in Brittany that makes the scent - used to have something waffly about nobility and ermines on their website; but I've checked and it only talks (briefly in English, at greater length in French) about the 'nobility of the French formal garden'. www.lostmarch.fr/product.php?id_product=19&id_lang=1 The pic of the ermine on their scent bottle is rather sweet, however.

Have just looked at fragrantica website, however - and I see that they make the link between ermine and nobility (though I wonder whether they are confusing 'Britain' and Brittany'): www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Lostmarch/L-eau-de-l-Hermine-9732.html

Agree that the scent does not last long; but to me that's part of its charm...

Awks · 04/01/2014 20:32

The D'hermine scent was nicer than the Phi in my view and I will thoroughly enjoy wearing something so unusual. What a FABULOUS idea to buy the samples. Thank you so much, I'd have never have thought of that.

For our 25th we're doing a bit of a european tour so I'm thinking of all the fragrance possibilities now. Fragrantica is really interesting too, I'm enjoying reading it.

Awks · 04/01/2014 21:00

Do you order free samples of perfumes? If so there is an Escada and a Lacoste one on the go. www.escada-fragrances.com/en/free-perfume-samples and www.fragrances.lacoste.com/US/eau-de-lacoste-l-12-12-noir-free-perfume-sample

Not sure if that's the done thing on here or not so forgive me for my enthusiasm :)
