Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

Awks I'm glad you are enjoying samples. Love the smaller quantities and variety - plus even the most expensive perfumes are within anyone's reach if you buy samples. And a few milliliters go a really long way!

I have just received ther unwanted bottle of Chanel 5 - I paid for 35 ml but received 50 ml - yay! Grin

FuzzLightbeard · 07/01/2014 17:19

Hello everyone, it's me Fuzzybirds under a new guise (don't know if anyone remembers me!)

I had to step away from the perfume rabbit hole for a while as I was overspending Blush but find it hard to stay away. Think I've got it under control now and am being more selective.

I decided on a FB of Habanita EDP for Christmas (thanks ToysRLuv for introducing me to it!) and also got Prada L'Eau Ambree. I'm currently coveting L'Erbolario's Meharees but can't find a UK stockist, anyone know where I can get it?

I do love Tauers but have decided not enough to splash out on a FB. Wearing Pure White Linen today as I feel I've overdosed on heavy orientals over Christmas!

FrugalFashionista · 07/01/2014 18:03

Great to see you again Fuzzy and a spending ban sounds great...

I made an awful discovery, the new No. 5 EDP is from a reformulated batch. It's totally missing the intoxicating and slightly oily and animalic sandalwood/incense basenote that reminds me of Vega by Guerlain; instead, the new lobotomized version has a fairly insipid and inoffensive baby powder base. My samples are not very old, just from last Christmas, and I thought the sellers handed them out because the scent was reformulated and relaunched. I did some detective work studying lot numbers - thank god I still have the cardboard bits the samples came with - it seems that my samples are slightly older stock. So now I'll have to visit the backrooms of perfumeries trying to match my samples Sad the same happened to me last year with No 19 EDT. The old version is hefty and crisp (I have a pre-2000s bottle), the new one a ho-hum limey juice.

FrugalFashionista · 08/01/2014 10:57

Have just received the Maison Kurkdjian samples from a courier. A nicely packaged samples order (totaling 14€ for 4 vials, including delivery!) arriving in the middle of a slightly frazzled day is truly luxurious - and Amyris pour femme is light, effervescent and elegant - perfect for the spring!

FuzzLightbeard · 08/01/2014 11:41

Frugal that's such a shame about the No. 5. I had heard that Chanel was one of the few houses that have managed to keep most of their scents fairly true to the originals but will be gutted if they change Coco Sad

A heads up for L'Artisan fans- 25% off today and tomorrow on all their fragrances

Today I'm wearing Miyake's Pleats Please EDP, which I think is a 2013 ltd edition. It was a surprise birthday present back in October, I would never have thought of even trying it but my mum obviously knows my tastes well as it has that lovely powdery, violet makeup type smell I love, mixed with a hint of macaroons, yum!

wiltingfast · 08/01/2014 21:15

19 has been reformulated?! You know I got a bottle last year and have felt something was missing, a certain sparkle, it seems much more floral than before...

I love Habanita fuzzy! Am hoping to pick up a bottle on ebay cheaply. Also have a small sample of tabac blond, trying to pick that up too on ebay but it seems very scarce.

Would love to try more leathers too...

FuzzLightbeard · 09/01/2014 12:33

Wilting Habanita is gorgeous, a proper va va voom vampy perfume! I haven't tried the older EDT but apparently the new EDP is quite different. Definitely only need one spray though Grin

Awks I love getting free samples too. My favourites have been from Comme des Garcons, I'd really recommend trying Blue Encens if they are still offering samples.

I'm having a gourmande craving today (maybe due to the annual new year diet) and so I'm wearing Casmir by Chopard. It reminds me of clotted cream vanilla ice cream with baileys poured over it. I'd really like to find a lemon meringue type scent as well. Making myself hungry now!

wiltingfast · 09/01/2014 15:30

Mona di Orio Vanille here. Mmmmmmmm Grin

Do places mind you going back and buying the same samples again ?

FrugalFashionista · 10/01/2014 08:01

Wilting do go for a new sample! I hardly ever empty my sample vials - I have far too many - but if I do, it's a sure sign that a decant or a full bottle is the way to go. Curiously, I tend to enjoy samples much more that FBs - the finiteness of samples enhances the pleasure I derive from them, whereas a full bottle just feels like a lot of work...

Bois de Jasmin has fantastic fragrant tips on unwinding and relaxation here - the comments are also full of lovely ideas.

FrugalFashionista · 10/01/2014 08:03

Wilting which version of Tabac Blond are you after? I have a languishing bottle that would need a new loving home...

wiltingfast · 10/01/2014 08:58

O wow I would take whatever I could get! The sample I have is from Les Senteurs courtesy of fuckitthatlldo. She took my l'eau d'hiver in return.

I doubt I have anything you'd like though. Are you on paypal? We could agree a fair reward perhaps Grin?

wiltingfast · 10/01/2014 14:02

Hope you enjoy them Linus! I admire your decisiveness Grin

Have just caved and order 6 samples from neroli

Sel Marin
Iris de Nuit
Cuir Velours
Cuir Pleine Fleur
Cardinal
Ormonde Woman

Can't wait!

FuzzLightbeard · 11/01/2014 15:10

Wilting hope your samples arrive quickly!

SOTD is Ambre Russe by Parfum D'Empire. It has a slightly horsey smell to me at the start, mixed with booze and dried fruit. Reminds me of feeding sugar molasses to horses many moons ago. I wish I'd worn this over Christmas as that sticky, liqueur, black treacly and raisin smell would have been perfect. It's faded now to a sweetly spiced amber.

Has anyone tried anything from 4160 Tuesdays? I love the sound of a lot of their fragrances, plus their samples are very generous and if you buy two they give you another one for free!

Apatite1 · 11/01/2014 15:13

wiltingfast: Sel Marin is the only aquatic in my collection. My husband keeps stealing it though....

Apatite1 · 11/01/2014 15:14

SOTD: Guerlain Spiriteuse double Vanille

FrugalFashionista · 11/01/2014 16:15

Wilting your list sounds great. Sel Marin is one of the few aquatics I've ever liked!

I've been wearing Absolue pour le soir, or possibly the perfume has been wearing me... Fuckit if you ever have a chance give it a try! Today wearing it's more subtle little sister Cologne pour le soir.

I like Spiritueuse DV a lot - a lovely perfumista friend gave me her decant, it's one of those scents that are for very specific moods and situations...

wiltingfast · 11/01/2014 18:24

I've wanted to try sel marin for ages, want to try the different company's sel de vetiver too, think alla violetta do samples of tdc so that will be my next port of call for samples. They've such a huge range though I find it hard to limit myself to €20 or €30!

Sotd le temps d'une fete by parfums de nicolai, this is a bit sweet on me in this weather, still beautiful though but comes into its own in summer, keep meaning to buy a fb as for a change, it's not that expensive...

FrugalFashionista · 12/01/2014 10:58

Wilting I really love that. Nicolai are rebranding (heard via Perfume Shrine) so it might be a good idea to snap up a bottle while they are still dirt cheap!

SOTD Acqua Allegoria Nerolia Bianca, loving the bright spring sunshine!

FuzzLightbeard · 14/01/2014 10:33

SOTD Donna Karan Black Cashmere- deep, smoky and spicy and quite dry. Not sure if I'd want a FB but the sample should last me some time.

coffeeinbed · 14/01/2014 10:37

Working from home today, so can, and will, douse self with CDG Daphne.
It has some nuclear type wafting strength.

FrugalFashionista · 15/01/2014 19:10

Have worn Coromandel and a fluffy mohair sweater for a few days. They complement each other. Nuclear sillage, trying to miss my wrist get half sprays , but enjoy the soft ember afterglow 12+ hours later!

A review of Coromandel on Fragrantica: "When you go through a drive through and reach out to get your drink and the lady says 'good Lord you smell good' it makes you re-think the 8 sprays you put on earlier..." Grin

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/01/2014 19:38

I had a taxi driver rave about Coromandel once, FF!

LittleBabyPigsus · 15/01/2014 19:38

I'm after something with basil notes - after smelling Price's cooks' candle Hmm It has basil, patchouli and geranium notes for those less into using candles to get rid of food smells! After looking on Fragrantica, L'Occitane's Eau Captivante, Isabella Rosselini's Manifesto and Clarins Eau Ressourcante seem like I would like them. I've always liked the herbal note that basil gives CK Obsession, so it makes sense to look for more basil fragrances!

Also, has anyone tried Elizabeth Arden Eau Fraiche? It has an interesting combination of notes, very Kolonischwasser.

coffeeinbed · 15/01/2014 20:21

Manifesto is long gone to the big perfume counter in the sky.
Eau ressourçante - not too sure I could ever smell basil there.
Try the Guerlain Aqua Allegorias - there was a basil one there, I think.

LittleBabyPigsus · 15/01/2014 20:57

Boo @ Manifesto no longer being around - that's a big downside of fragrantica I guess! There is a basil Guerlain Aqua Allegoria, although I am trying to break out of my Guerlain rut Grin I suppose it's not so much a rut as just my skin working very well with Guerlain perfumes.
