Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

OP posts:

LittlePig check out Eau du Sud by Annick Goutal (you might find it deeply discounted)! Other great unisex basil fragrances are L'Eau de l'Artisan and Eau Sauvage (every men's department) and the discontinued herby Virgilio from Diptyque.

Then there is of course Lime Basil Mandarin - but that has always smelled really matronly to me (like rank hand cream) for some reason. Not a fan Sad

Someone (a taxi driver too?) said that the best smell in the world is a woman entering a cab carrying a bunch of basil...

MrsSchadenfreude · 16/01/2014 08:29

LittlePig, I got a bottle (100ml) of Eau du Sud from TK Maxx for around £40.

Fuzz - if you want a lemon meringue scent, try Lux by Mona di Orio. But don't buy a FB - most of mine evaporated. Sad

Stokey · 16/01/2014 09:22

Don't know if any of you like Floris, but there are a few half price at the moment on their website.

Their shop is on the road where I work so I may pop in this evening & have a sniff.

cosikitty · 16/01/2014 20:01

I wore Coromandel today to work. It really does have great silage! I sprayed generously and enjoyed wafting around in a fuzzy cloud of it all day, got lots of compliments too so I guess everyone could smell it as well. Grin

FuzzLightbeard · 16/01/2014 20:29

MrsSF I've had a look for samples of Lux but sadly it seems to be discontinued, thank you for the suggestion though. I do have DKNY pink macaroons, which sounds hideous but if like me you enjoy smelling like pudding then it is rather delicious Grin

I would like to order some samples of the more gourmandey Parfumerie Generale perfumes but really need to use up some of what I've got before adding more. I love Coromandel as well but try not to use it too often as those are the only samples I don't want to end!

SOTD is JPG Fleur Du Male (also discontinued, grrrr....)

MrsSchadenfreude · 16/01/2014 21:38

I work near Floris, too. Perhaps I'll go and have a sniff tomorrow.

LittleBabyPigsus · 16/01/2014 21:59

Fuzz Eau de Shalimar is lemon meringuey imo - all citrus and vanilla, so different to the original Shalimar.

LittleBabyPigsus · 16/01/2014 21:59

Also thanks for the basil frag recommendations! Will hunt down some Annick Goutal - I've always had it recommended but have never known where to find it in brick and mortar stores.

Huitre · 16/01/2014 22:22

The Floris grapefruit candle is gorgeous. I don't know anything else of theirs.

FuzzLightbeard · 17/01/2014 14:10

Thanks LittleBaby I'll give that one a try, I did try one of the lighter Shalimars but that was ages ago and can't remember which one it was now.

Today my sugar cravings are being tormented by Aquolina Pink Sugar. I did expect just candy floss but there is quite a bit of aniseed or liquorice in there, still maybe a bit too sweet even for me!

Stokey · 17/01/2014 14:49

Well went in to Floris last night and sprayed Madonna of Almonds which had very peachy top note and the Amaryllis which was a little flowery.

Neither as nice as the Amber one, which isn't in the sale.

cosikitty · 21/01/2014 07:57

Can I just ask what you all do with your empty perfume bottles? I have saved some of my favourite empties, but they just sit on a shelf in the bathroom gathering dust, however it seems a waste to just throw them away. I have nice decorative bottles such as Oriens and Cartier Delices, but in reality they just get in the way.

wiltingfast · 21/01/2014 10:51

Oooo, my sample arrived from Neroli!

Tried James Heeley's Cuir Pleine Fleur yesterday but while I liked it, it also made my head swim and I had to scrub it off after about an hour. Bit puzzled as I usually only get that reaction for the big white florals, my head just doesn't like them. It was late afternoon adn I was tired and hungry which probaby didn't help. Might try again another day before writing it off. The violet leaf was quite strong on me and also leather. There was a nice woodiness underneath.

Today, Ormonde Woman which is wonderful! Green, floral, warm but not suffocating. Sort of green undergrowth in the Summer without the rotting mustiness you sometimes get. I don't see this sample lasting long!

Cosikitty my bottles of perfume so far are not that special so I throw them out. You do see them on sale sometimes on ebay and the like but I assume they are rare special bottles?

FuzzLightbeard · 21/01/2014 13:32

Cosikitty I normally hang on to my empties and sell them on ebay as a job lot, but I think it does depend on the bottles.

Wilting Ormonde Woman sounds very tempting!

SOTD is CDG Blue Encens, purely as I'm trying to use up all the half samples I have before ordering anymore. I don't know, I'm not that keen on this one. It's smoky but dry and cold at the same time.

cosikitty · 21/01/2014 14:46

Just noticed that Harrods has an Ormonde Jayne discovery set for £42, with 11 samples. The prices for her full bottles though are crazy! Would like to try a few samples.
I have just been sniffing my collection, fancying a hit of something summery and floral today, had enough of winter! Carnal flower is the ultimate summer evening scent, one sniff of the bottle and it's a balmy August night!

FuzzLightbeard · 24/01/2014 10:16

Still on project 'use up samples' and have managed to finish Teint de Neige today. I love it but don't think I could justify a FB, the sample has lasted months so I may just order another one!

wiltingfast · 27/01/2014 15:18

Ah Fuzz, I'm not a fan of Teint de Neige, it was too almondy on me.

sotd, a surprise sample from Neroli, James Heeley's Coccobello.

I only tried this today as I feared sweet coconutty vanilla vibe I was sure it contained.

But what a surprise, it is definitely coconut but not at all sweet, it has a lovely green freshness. The initial burst is really lovely, fresh green floral, sophisticated, reminded me a bit of Chanel 19, the coconut is subtle and never too much.

Alas it is also v fleeting, at least on me, and settles to a pleasant soft creamy (the white florals?) skin scent quite quickly but when I put my nose to my wrist I can still smell a fresh sharpness that I can't quite identify but I like very much. Definitely one to try ladies!

FuzzLightbeard · 27/01/2014 20:25

Funnily enough I was just reading about Coccobello on Facebook, sounds like a good one for summer Wilting. If anyone is looking for decants, there are a few FB groups worth joining (search for UK/ EU Fragrance and they will come up) especially as ebay has clamped down on decant sellers recently.

Another sample used up today- Armani Si. Very sweet and vanillary but not very interesting. I'm looking forward to ordering some new and exciting ones!

KosherBacon · 28/01/2014 09:27

I impulse bought myself a 50ml bottle of Shalimar EDP. It was a gift set with a 15ml travel sized bottle for £49.99. I love it. I think I was born to be in the 1920's as this and my Bois Des Iles are some of my favourites at the moment.

FrugalFashionista · 04/02/2014 20:56

This thread is on life support, maybe because we all are in committed monogamous relationships now Wink

Ladies what are you wearing? And if you could have one full bottle free just now what would you pick? I'd have to think about it but Tauer's Ingrid, Phi, vintage Y and Flash Back by Olfactive Studio are all strong contenders.

Today I'm wearing my long-term girlfriend favorite from last summer, Guerlain AA Nerolia Bianca.

Warm springlike days. Will start wearing rhubarb perfumes soon...

FrugalFashionista · 04/02/2014 20:57

Oh and Heeleys are lovely and Shalimar is never wrong!

hollyisalovelyname · 04/02/2014 21:43

Littke Baby, House Of Fraser do Annick Goutal as do Harrods. I'd be surprised if John Lewis didn't do it. Why not buy a same from Surrender To Chance website.

cosikitty · 05/02/2014 08:03

If I could choose a free bottle of anything I would pick Kilian Beyond Love.

FrugalFashionista · 05/02/2014 08:59

Cosi I love Beyond Love! Kilians are perfect for this time of the year, subtantial but very wearable.

A wet, dreary morning. I'm wearing Phi from Tauer. It's wonderfully nutty and comforting (apricot oil, I guess it involves the kernels) and a rare rose absolute from Afghanistan. FBs are sold out and I regret not splashing out but thank god I have two samples. 3 or 4ml is quite a lot when the stuff is heady and longwearing...

cosikitty · 06/02/2014 08:02

I joined the Kilian facebook page and entered my details there and they sent me some samples, completely out of the blue, a few months ago! So worth joining.
