....ever:

wear open toed shoes with tights

wear navy blue with black

Wear a denim jacket with jeans, even if the denims were different colours

show my midriff (am 36 - too old for such things) - apart from in bikini on hols

go bare legged to the office

OP posts:
YummyxMummy · 24/05/2011 18:27

I hate sandals with socks lol
I would never wear tights with open toed shoes (boke)
I would never wear black and blue either or the 2 denims
Trainers (unless when I'm going to the Gym)
I hate dressed trousers (unless a funeral, or office) find them so old fashioned.

Thirtysomething is not old

No, it isn't. I'm 37 and I don't feel old.

I do feel too old for city shorts though.

There are lots of thirtysomething women who don't feel too old for city shorts, though, and what they don't realise is that all the twentysomethings they're apeing are making "vom" gestures behind their backs.

thomasbodley · 24/05/2011 18:59

I think it's the flesh and wrinkles issue. Once you have more creases on your face than you have on your clothes, it might be time to cover up Grin.

chickieno1 · 24/05/2011 19:02

jeggings

denim on denim

InAStateOfReflux · 24/05/2011 19:17

I never wear cap sleeves. Even at my skinniest they make me look like a bodybuilder.

squashycreech · 24/05/2011 19:18

Uggs, fake not fake, whatever. Stop walking on the sides of your feet fgs.

Ill-fitting cotton non-descript t-shirt monstrosities that scream "I couldn't be arsed"

Ballerina shoes

Fleeces

American Tan tights with open toe shoes - opaque are cute and fine, anything that matches your leg colour and is thin (the point of which presumably being to make it look like you are not wearing tights?) looks so tacky

Crocs, don't even feel I have to mention that, they're too horrid for words.

Strapless dresses, every time I see one I cringe. They suit NO ONE.

Fleece jackets

Heels that need to be re-heeled. Looks so cheap.

Havaianas - look like they were bought off a market

Jeggings

On the other hand, I love playsuits. Think the right colour of blue can look ok with black. No opinion on leggings, think they can look nice but are way too ubiquitous and if you're wearing a "nice" dress, maybe it would look better if you wore tights/bare legs. See lots of girls at work in a smart shift dress with leggings which looks all wrong.

MissBeehiving · 24/05/2011 19:36

Slogan t shirts and anything with Disney on it. Oh and anything with obvious branding. So declasse.

sungirltan · 24/05/2011 19:54

heels that need to be reheeled? i have just had a pair of caterpillar bikers reheeled after 3 years of wear - do they count? he he i know what you mean though. i wore pointy heels exclusively in my early 20's, all the fecking time. when i moved down here and relaxed a bit i rrally noticed how much i didnt get back ache and wasn't fecking knackered all the tine! feel like a fool but ay least i realised it before i was 25! and i dont have to go to timpson all the time Grin

agree with disney - yurk and just weird if you are over 12 - akin to grown women dressing as sexy schoolgirls to me - bit disturbing.

i wear uggs but i am a sahm and i wear them during the day out and about. i would not wear them to work or to anything dressy! they are real

i dont mind havianans but the pale colours need to be kept clean or they look v cheap and horrid.

the jumpsuits comment amused me. dh bought me a khaki short one from miss selfridge (too old for that shop) which he thought was sex personified. i wore it out once and felt like a total dick. dh proudly posted pics on fb and i had a fair few tactful comments from friends confirming i looked like a dick. dh mourns the jumpsuit.

actually i'd question anything dh champions as being a fashion error. he thinks demin min skirts are the height of style too. they are not. imo they can only be worn in high summer with a demure top/vest and flip flops with no tattoos showing. anything else and the look is totally 'jockey barmaid'!

NotaMopsa · 24/05/2011 20:15

leggings... that just about covers it

maxi dress if you are over size 10/12

faustina · 24/05/2011 20:47

why must you always wear something lighter on your top half? Someone mentioned this and I don't understand

dexter73 · 24/05/2011 20:49

What would you wear with white trousers?

faustina · 24/05/2011 20:51

exactly!

Mspontipine · 24/05/2011 21:09

There's a hell of people wearing judgey pants on here. Now that's not a good look for anyone :(

baskingseals · 24/05/2011 21:18

i would never wear black with another strong colour

i think i got that off trinny and susannah actually
so it's black with black, or if i'm really living on the edge, camel or some sort of muted colour.

sungirltan · 24/05/2011 21:23

yy to unpainted toenails though its looks ok with flip flops if they are neatly trimmed nails. otherwise yick

joogle · 24/05/2011 21:29

Lighter on the top half - it's an optical illusion to make your legs/bum look slimmer and boobs look larger, I guess if you had very large boobs and skinny legs you could try it the other way round though!

With white trousers you could wear a light coloured top or white top.

Matching shoe colour with tights colour is also an optical illusion trick, it makes your legs look longer & slimmer.

mummymeister · 24/05/2011 21:35

I stopped wearing jeans when i was 45. I would never
go without a bra
wear anything bright yellow - i look like a teletubby
wear a dress above my knees
wear a bikini or tankini
Wear any of those peasant layered maxi dresses - i remember them the first time round with layers of underskirts and vivid memories of exiting the toilet at the disco looking cool whilst everything was tucked in my knickers,
wear pyjamas or anything in bed

thefirstMrsDeVere · 24/05/2011 21:39

Poo to rules.

Apart from the bra strap thing. Why?

Its not even just bra straps now is it? Its almost the whole bloody bra. If you can see most of your horrible old bra you are wearing the wrong top.

That is it.

Wear what you want. I do.

joogle · 24/05/2011 21:41

Wundering why women shouldn't go braless, is it a saggy boob thing or a modesty issue?

joogle · 24/05/2011 21:42

Sorry wondering not wundering!

PoweredbyTea · 24/05/2011 21:56

I have loads of rules but they only apply to myself. A lot of them relate to not listening to DH who is a lot like sungirltan's by the sound of it. He will always tell me to wear shorter dresses, higher heels, tighter tops... no matter what the occasion! I agree with leggings being fine only if worn as you would tights, no double denim, not too much jewellery at once. But Clarks shoes are a boon for people with foot problems (judge ye not!!) and I like tights with contrasting-coloured shoes, don't care if it's fashionable or not I just like it.

Dressing for work is interesting for me as anything goes in our office. A trendy fashion mag is based there (I don't work on it) and some of the stuff the 20-somethings wear is eye-popping. Hot pants, leather leggings, stripper shoes...

chipmonkey · 24/05/2011 22:03

I mostly wear whatever's clean.

RosieRed · 24/05/2011 22:05

Damn I went out the other day wearing a pair of blue tights with my cute new navy peep-toes with black straps. I have broken all the rules, but then Fly London made the shoes. I also like my Ugg-style boots when it snows and have been known occasionally to venture out to the corner shop, tucking my trackies or even my black p.j. bottoms into them during a cold enough spell to justify a big coat that covers all.
AND I am with alpine pony - where are the dresses with sleeves to be had? Until some turn up I suspect will continue to wear strapless ones with boleros and cardis as I have been doing for many many years.
Am I just a fashion disaster area?
