Wear a denim jacket with jeans, even if the denims were different colours

as an aside, where do all you people live where it's warm enough to go bare legged at work in summer?

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 25/05/2011 13:55

Not Cumbria! The south....although those who work in air-con offices probably need a granny blanket to put over them when sitting for long periods...

OTheHugeManatee · 25/05/2011 14:14

Oh yes. One shoulder or strapless anything.

LaLoose · 25/05/2011 15:08

Never, ever, ever wear anything assymetrical. It looks like an old crumpled hankie, even on models.

IWantAnotherBaby · 25/05/2011 15:16

-Jewellery from Argos
-Any jewellery with words/ names on it (beyond naff)
-crinkle fabric dresses
-sandals with unkempt feet
-Empire-line dresses (make me look pregnant)
-chunky knitwear
-crocs, Uggs

startail · 25/05/2011 15:27

My personal pet hate is people who go to nice restaurants in very casual clothes, (men are the worst offenders, but some women too).
I'm a SAHM, I don't often have a babysitter and the chance to dress up.
It's my birthday, I've made the effort to look nice. I've made DH look presentable, the restaurant is sparkling, the food is delicious and the waiter/waitress is neatly dressed and polite. Then you turn up in the sort of scruffy jeans I use for the school run. It's downright rude.

TooImmature2BMum · 25/05/2011 15:45

What's so wrong with maxi dresses? Or strapless dresses if they fit properly and don't have that little roll of flesh under the armpit.

Personally, I hate round-necked T-shirts or one shoulder tops because they make my sizeable boobs look giant and football-esque.

Some fabric makes me cringe and/or sneer. Like those black polyester trousers Topshop has for staple school/work wear. Eww. They bring my judgy pants out in hives. So does anything from Next. I know lots of people wear Next, but it is just Not Me.

TrillianAstra · 25/05/2011 15:52

There is a msssive difference between

something I woudln't wear because I don't like it and/or it doens't suiT me

and

this is a faux pas and not-one should ever wear it

PlanetEarth · 25/05/2011 16:00

startail, you've made me think of one. Not exactly a fashion faux pas maybe, but it annoys me when DH and I are going somewhere nice once in a blue moon, so I make a bit of effort to dress up and look somewhat better than usual. Then it turns out he's standing waiting for me in the fleece and jeans he's had on for several days, and is somewhat surprised when I suggest he might get changed. Grrr!

PlanetEarth · 25/05/2011 16:01

Actually yes, let's make that a fashion faux pas, fleeces at parties and in restaurants!

I also don't like the look of yellow gold, but I'm sure I heard that apparently the yellower the gold, the purer it is! But I'll stick to the cheaper paler stuff, ta very much!

MoonGirl1981 · 25/05/2011 17:39

Ooooo, I saw one today on the way back from school.

A skirt soooo short that the top bit of the black tights (thick bit at the top which look like hot pants) is on show. Looked like she was wearing a top, mini skirt, shorts, tights. Not a slim girl either.

I will NOT be doing that!

TheGoddessBlossom · 25/05/2011 17:55

Trillian I did originally mean, faux pas, as in should never, by anyone, be worn.... If were to get onto things that I wish I could carry off but can't my list would have significantly longer.....

blueberrysorbet · 25/05/2011 18:05

i have got into the habit of looking at a full lenght mirror to see myself from front and back and it seems to mean i get changed a lot:)

would try not to go out with
wear jeans that are a bit too short
camel foot thing
tight anything over bulging tummy
ill fitting underwear
faded colours
i'm a princess t shirts or allow my dd to wear t shirts with future wag on them-what is that?
too short shorts
tucked in too tight or too loose tshirts to saggy mum jeans with no belt- not to be confused with a super slim person with a tucked in vest top and skinny jeans and a cool belt
tights with open toed shoes.
hairy legs under tights
unwaxed/ shaved legs and underarms with vests or bare legs
denimn shirt
denim skirt that is badly hemmed with bits hanging down and supposed to look rock chick. it doesnt.

am clearly old and wishing c&a was still open so i could go and get som,e new clothes:)

noddyholder · 25/05/2011 18:09

Bootcut jeans
Waterfall anything
Anorak type coats
Smart jeans ie ironed with nice blouse and classy belt
Gladiator sandals
Anything pink on a big bum

kerstina · 25/05/2011 19:00

My fashion pet hates are horrible loud print dresses which people seem to love at the mo.
anything but underwear from marks and spencers(frumpy and too big sizing)
anything yellow
pandora bracelets and too much gold prefer silver
football shirts
tatoos

hardcolin · 25/05/2011 19:25

Navy & black together is fine by me

But I could never wear...

Harem pants

Dungarees. Only the very young look super-cute in them

Coloured jeans or cords (from the 90's?) Blue, black, grey and shades of, yes but in cherry red, apple green or white? I just couldn't.

Gladiator sandals and those sandals/flats with the ankle cuffs (if there is a name for them)

Bolero jackets

Velour tracksuits

Blue mascara. Why?

Leggings and crop tops - can someone explain why people think they look fantastic in them. Even if they are a size 8 /10, it doesn't mean they suit them.

I dislike to see men wearing jewellery/bling - an overload of earrings, chains, bracelets...medalions - yuk yuk yuk.
A watch, and maybe a wedding ring is more than enough to see thank you

Mens coloured formal/lounge shirts with white collars and white cuffs

FWIW my parents wedding bands (and my mum's engagement/eternity rings) are white gold; 40 years old and they still look timeless.
When it comes to yellow gold, I prefer the less showy white gold or platinum Grin

neuroticmumof3 · 25/05/2011 19:27

I would never
wear white
wear tights with sandals or open toed shoes
wear jeggings
wear dark tights with light shoes

i do, however, wear
gladiator sandals
maxi dresses (I am a size 10 so this may be ok)
clarks boots

hardcolin · 25/05/2011 19:30

In that case, Trillian, my list of 'I would never wear' would also double up as the 'no-one should ever wear' Smile

FellatioNelson · 25/05/2011 19:33

I would never lower myself to don those silly boots with cut out toes. They are the ugliest thing ever invented.

sunshineatlast · 25/05/2011 19:37

Would never wear pastel pink
white trousers
leather trousers
gladiator sandals
court shoes
blouses

FellatioNelson · 25/05/2011 19:52

court shoes? Confused

That's a bit of a sweeping category.

kerstina · 25/05/2011 20:34

I think I know what you mean by court shoes and I would not where them either too boring. What's the consensus on denim pinafore dresses as I recently bought one and think I may be too old to wear it but just fancied one ! Midlife crisis ? Don't want people looking at me like they do older people in city shorts! Although I find it hard to tell people in their 20's from 30's if they look ok.

sadiesadiemarriedlady · 25/05/2011 20:39

Clarks shoes. Yuk. Crap quality and you pay a high price for it. I used to buy them because my mum used to buy them and her mum before her. Doesn't mean they are good though. I don't buy them anymore.
