....ever:

wear open toed shoes with tights

wear navy blue with black

Wear a denim jacket with jeans, even if the denims were different colours

show my midriff (am 36 - too old for such things) - apart from in bikini on hols

go bare legged to the office

exactly Confused

The thread is 'I would never ever wear...'

Not 'I don't think anyone should ever wear...'

idratherbeboarding · 24/05/2011 11:25

You just won't see chic business women in sheer tights in the summer.

I don't have white, corned beef or badly applied self tanned legs, they are lightly tanned and slim.

It's all about how you wear bare legs; I wear chic, stylish business attire and shoes. I don't wear viscose suits from Next, which granted look terrible with bare legs.

52Girls · 24/05/2011 11:27

Not sure of your point but the beauty if threads like this surely is to comment on others' thoughts. Pretty light hearted stuff !

52Girls · 24/05/2011 11:28

To summerrain, sorry idrather! Agree with your points 100% though!

bucaneve · 24/05/2011 11:30

Pjamas outside (ok, well I'd go to the end of the garden in them)

A necklace and earings at the same time, when I do it it just looks funny

A strapless bra (would just fall down, I am flat chested and would just go without)

Ooh, peep toes/sandals and tan/clear tights. You can always see the toes and it just looks funny

I would do most of the double denim/playsuit/clashing colour things tho.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 24/05/2011 11:32

It does say 'your view' right up there in the title ... and clarifies with 'for example, I would never' ... what more do you want you?! Grin

AbsDuCroissant · 24/05/2011 11:40

I've done tons of stuff on this thread.

But, I would never:

  • wear synthetic fabrics (apart from viscose). They're horrible and they make you sweat
  • wear a cropped top
  • leggings with short top
  • Crocs
  • Mom jeans
  • Fleeces
  • strapless dresses, unless you're super toned
Franup · 24/05/2011 12:22

niminypiminy fellow dinner lady here, but dresses with arms (or decent, non-cap sleeve coverage) are aplenty in Oasis. But as I don't show my legs either, not much I liked.

By the way as I don't show my legs, sometimes in height of summer, in desperation, I have been know to display my 'ham arms' but thankfully live in UK, so only a few days per year that they absolutely can't be covered.

whoneedssleepanyway · 24/05/2011 13:22

i think navy and black look good.
but i also wear nude shoes with opaques which apparently is a no-no...

agree about denim and denim (although I remember as a sixth former everyone wore those denim shirts with jeans...)

tan tights no no no
bare legs in the office yes yes yes

visible underwear big faux pas (e.g. thong tops, VPLs etc)

Insomnia11 · 24/05/2011 14:07

There are no universal rules really, though if any I would say not to follow fashion and just wear what suits you.

I love synthetic fabrics. Thank god for Lycra and Tactel. And for acryllic so I dont have to wear scratchy pure wool jumpers in winter.

perplexedpirate · 24/05/2011 14:07

A round neck t-shirt. With my chest it's a one way ticket to Monoboob.

frazzle26 · 24/05/2011 14:14

Too much (usually cheap) jewellery. I've seen women wearing so many tacky gold necklaces that I can't even count them and they're usually the one's wearing the horrible "Mum" rings.

5VO1 · 24/05/2011 14:15

A nylon fleece with a large wolf howling against the moon on front. I think they're from QVC.

InAStateOfReflux · 24/05/2011 14:20

What do you wear navy blue with then? I am too fat to wear pale colours, especially on the bottom! I have a lovely navy jumper and I do wear it with black, usually a skirt, I'm afraid. Far better than dimply cellulite under cream linen slacks I'm sure...

But have to agree with the double denim. Never to be worn together, especially if the denims are different shades! Grin

EldonAve · 24/05/2011 14:20

I would never wear open-toed shoes with tights

Wear just black and white (my mother always told me off for this and that I would look like a waitress)

dawntigga · 24/05/2011 14:21

View (the trend predictor) says next year will trend towards sandals with socks for men

slovenlydotcom · 24/05/2011 14:23

Idratherbe. Your post has made me howl laughing. We get the idea love. You are chic. And stylish.

However I will ways believe that tights/ stockings look more professional. No matter how good the legs. Or how CHIC AND STYLISH the clothes are

tethersend · 24/05/2011 14:32

Never wear clothes with pictures of people more attractive than you on them. Ever.

tooworried · 24/05/2011 14:36

I would never:

*walk to work wearing my smart business suit AND TRAINERS!
*wear trousers which trail along the ground and get filthy (usually the hem is undone too)
*wear flip flops to work

These are all quite common sights in London unfortunately

idratherbeboarding · 24/05/2011 14:39

Wow, slovenlydotcom, you are easily pleased. Maybe you ought to get out a bit more if that made you 'howl' with laughter Hmm

eurochick · 24/05/2011 15:09

"You just won't see chic business women in sheer tights in the summer."

This is so wrong. I am a lawyer in the City and see loads of them, although I will admit that bare legs are now more acceptable than when I started working here a decade ago.

My pet hates:

-too long trousers
-too short trousers, swinging around ankles
-tights with open toes (I know the fashion mags say yes but I say a very firm no)
-leggings with a short top so you show the world your camel toe
-heels so high you can't walk in them (so for me anything over about 10cm)
-Crocs

TheGoddessBlossom · 24/05/2011 15:39

good catch Tethersend. Y would you do that? Wrong wrong wrong.

OP posts:
smartyparts · 24/05/2011 15:53

Further to my ham arms comment, I have just been to Tesco where it was faux pas city.

So I can now add, "I would never wear sleeveless tops with big fat ham arms and a tattoo Hmm

greygirl · 24/05/2011 16:06

i don't like navy and black, I think the colours don't contrast enough against each other but I don't consider it a major fashion crime.

I don't like girls/women who are plump wearing bikinis/cut off tops. all they reveal is gut and muffin top and it really doesn't look pretty.

i don't really like bare legs in an office - I think it looks less polished somehow (but OK if skirt below knee).

I would like to say though that some people look terrific whatever they wear.

chrisonabike · 24/05/2011 16:20

anything strapless, especially wedding dresses.

And on the gold argument? Rose gold is the most flattering, and unusual enough to be a classy alternative.
