....ever:

wear open toed shoes with tights

wear navy blue with black

Wear a denim jacket with jeans, even if the denims were different colours

show my midriff (am 36 - too old for such things) - apart from in bikini on hols

go bare legged to the office

OP posts:

What are mom jeans?

Insomnia11 · 24/05/2011 16:40

*walk to work wearing my smart business suit AND TRAINERS!

Uh? For me that was a practical necessity when I worked in London as I'd go to the gym before work then jump on the tube, and keep my work shoes in my desk. Also I'd have a 15 minute walk to the station (then the same back). Commuting in heels - no thanks. Once I got a pair of brand new expensive heels caught in a metal gap on the tube platform, it scraped the leather off the back and they were ruined.

FellatioNelson · 24/05/2011 16:42

Navy and black can look ok, but I agree it is vair difficult to pull off, so I would usually steer clear.

I admit on occasion I have worn open toed shoes and tights, but only if they have a tiny peep toe and very subtle seam. It's better than my purple mottled legs any day.

Agree about the midriff (the age cut off point really depends on your figure but generally it's a no-no on anyone who is not still in full time education.

Totally agree about the double denim. It's a hanging offence.

ClaireDeLoon · 24/05/2011 16:46

I also work in the city and agree with eurochick plenty of chic and stylish women will wear tights in the summer but also now it's fine to go bare legged if you have nice legs and a subtle tan.

However the other day I did see someone in a black shapeless skirt suit and flip flops. Horrendous. So my own view is that is a definite fashion faux pas.

sungirltan · 24/05/2011 16:47

can i add my personal pet hate? hoodie tops with heels! just no!

SarfEasticated · 24/05/2011 16:48

I would never wear

  • lap dancer shoes
  • a strapless bra
  • fake tan
  • anything that is yellow
  • clothes that showed off my cleavage in the office
BunnyLebowski · 24/05/2011 16:49

joogle Mom Jeans

Insomnia11 · 24/05/2011 16:54

I wore crop tops when they were briefly fashionable in about 1996. I was 20/21. Never thought of wearing them before, or since.

OK, I do have a couple of no nos

Leggings with a short top without any skirt or other garment- looks like you have forgotten to put the bottom half on. Obviously with a long top it's ok.

Yesterday I saw a man on a bicycle in jeans with his arse crack hanging out. So at any time having your arse crack on display.

FlyingStart · 24/05/2011 16:56

What's wrong with navy and black?

polyhymnia · 24/05/2011 16:59

Anything that is yellow, or orange, or pink, or red (except for small touches).

polyhymnia · 24/05/2011 17:00

Nothing wrong with navy and black - can be chic.

dustwhatdust · 24/05/2011 17:04

Gosh i disagree with lots on here!

YES yes, to clarks shoes , they've a really great range now.

so depends on the wearer ,as to not wearing tights in the office

Nothing wrong with yellow gold , depends how you wear it

I was told by my old french boss ( female) that navy and black together is very chic !

can't bear:

women who wear v. low cut tops as everyday wear , spilling out all over the place - so yuk !

Wearing tummy button rings and a big belly hanging out - keep it covered same goes for jeans not covering their arse...

Very high F. Me shoes , they are not sexy

men wearing shorts and flip flops in town .

grown men in football shirts when NOT playing football

I can go on , but i won't ...

I wouldnt;
go bra-less
wear leggings
wear a jumpsuit
wear anything that exposed my upper arms
wear a bikini
wear jodhpurs (unless I was actually sitting on a horse)

there are many more..........

threestars · 24/05/2011 17:19

no to:
double denim
'court' shoes
wide elasticated belt
crossover top (because I am flat as a pancake)

bonnetarte · 24/05/2011 17:23

angelina does navy and black although why Brad came as wurzel gummage is a mystery

Cattleprod · 24/05/2011 17:32

Soft thin trousers on men so you can see which side they dress to, and their religion.

Ditto short shorts on men - on two occasions I have seen a stray testicle dangling out of one of the leg holes.

thomasbodley · 24/05/2011 17:39

I'm bemused by women who are very ostentatiously fashionable without being young. Often they're women who have kept their girlish figures but find it difficult to adapt their style to the ageing on their faces.

At the moment, I'm continually meeting thirtysomething women in the fashion industry wearing 'city shorts'. At a distance they look marvellous, up close and all you can see is pending middle-age all over their face. There's something oddly repellant about it.

Just because you can wear something, it doesn't mean you should.

thomasbodley · 24/05/2011 17:41

Repellent. Sigh. That English degree was such a waste of money.

nokissymum · 24/05/2011 17:52

Tea shirts with crass slogans that say things like "don't touch","rock steady" [sceptical]

chrisonabike · 24/05/2011 17:59

I would never wear a T-shirt with the print of a more attractive woman than I.

Tip: unless you're more of a stunner than Debbie Harry, don't strut about with her face on your chest. You will always look dowdy in comparison.

MrsCampbellBlack · 24/05/2011 18:09

Lordy Thomasbodley - you are repelled by a thirtysomething wearing city shorts! Thirtysomething is not old.

Oh and I wear whatever I like and undoubtedly some of my choices would be considered faux pas (who am I kidding - I'm uber-stylish and chic) Wink.

But really I like to see different looks and styles - its interesting.

joogle · 24/05/2011 18:14

Here's my rather extensive list:

Never wear bootcut jeans with ballet pumps
Never wear clothes that don't fit properly and create a muffin top or 'double boob'
Never have bra straps showing under clothes
Never wear jeans or trousers which are ill fitting and too short - ankle flappers
Jeans trousers which are too long and therefore all frayed around the bottom
Different shades of black within the same outfit, one will look faded
Always match shoe colour with tights colour
Always wear a lighter colour on the top half
Tattoos on upper arms - infact anywhere on arms
Black roots with brassy yellow greasy hair
Gold sovereigns
F'uggs (fake uggs)
Bright orange dirty streaky looking fake tan
Mixing pink & red
Eastern European style bleached ripped jeans with zippers/fake distressing all over them
Calf length skirts
Calf length skirts with knee high boots
gaping buttons on tops

joogle · 24/05/2011 18:17

Sorry in my haste forgot to add never in front of a few of those, am sure you can work out which ones!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 24/05/2011 18:20

Would never wear
Uggs, fake or otherwise, they are plain ugly
Croccs - aka care in the community shoes
Harem Pants - their point is?
Jump or Playsuits - they are fine for babies in prams, but no one else
Dungarees - anyone over 6 should be shot for wearing these
Skinny jeans that are too long with yards of fabric bunching round the ankle
Trainers unless at the gym
Gathered skirts of any sort
Anything with an elasticated waist
