wear open toed shoes with tights

wear navy blue with black

Wear a denim jacket with jeans, even if the denims were different colours

show my midriff (am 36 - too old for such things) - apart from in bikini on hols

go bare legged to the office

Denim pinafore Hmm please say youre joking?

kerstina · 25/05/2011 21:01

No not jokingBlush its a dungaree dress from gap might just wear it on a hot day on the beach.

mippy · 25/05/2011 21:36

If you have size 9 feet, Clarks is your friend.

My pet hate is foundation that doesn't match. I know it's hard to get shades to match pale skin (weird as most white people in this country are very pale), but the worst is when people don't own their skintone and instead try and make it darker via application of Sandy Beige or Chicken Pasty.

Also, cliched tattoos. I love sleeves and interesting ones, but going for whatever's currently trendy gets dated very quickly. Chinese symbols, dolphins, football crests, and the saddest of all, face or portrait tattoos which never come out quite right.

SofaQueen · 25/05/2011 21:55

Hmmm. My idea of fashion faux-pas depend on the individual. Anything is a faux pas if it is ill-fitted, wears the wearer, and does not flatter the wearer.

Many of the things which have been listed can look good on the right person:

  • I saw a whippit thin pre-pubescent girl wearing black jeggings, short uggs, and a navy and white striped breton top. She looked darling.
  • I saw a woman wearing mustard coloured tights, dark brown mustard coloured open-toed platforms, a fifties-style skirt (just above the calf). She oozed cool.

-I saw a toddler wearing teeny crocs in lime green - so cute

etc...

Rules, schmules. I saw wear what looks good and feels good. Oh, and the person who was offended by the well preserved "elderly" thrity something in city shorts, I saw a stunning woman in her early 50s (white streaked hair in a soft bob) wearing leather leggings and ROCKING it. She had the style and the presence to get away with it.

messyartist · 25/05/2011 21:56

No to wearing PJ's on school run or anywhere outside the home
no to harem pants
yes to tapered trouser
no to bootcut jeans - looks dated
no no to play suits
yes to simple structured jumpsuit - can look very stylish
no to cheap gold sandals/shoes
maybe to Maxi dresses - taller ladies floaty shapes shorter ladies straight cut fitted not dragging on the floor
No to False eyelashes
no to deep fake tan
jet black dyed long dark hair on older ladies same for harsh blond hair
no to tatoo's

SofaQueen · 25/05/2011 21:56

ugg - need to edit !

THe Breton top was hip length, and the shoes were dark brown, not mustard coloured!

Katenotts · 25/05/2011 22:13

Ooh, those fleeces with wolves on, or polar bears. Have you seen them? My mum refuses to believe they exist. Have just bought some gladiator sandals and am now doubting my purchase!

Wingdingdong · 25/05/2011 22:20

No to dried snot/vomit/banana on the left shoulder.

Unfortunately this is what I seem to wear most days now.

Fleece is not a no-no, it's an absolute must. It might look crap, and you spark as you walk, but the vomit just runs off. M&S once did Teflon suits for blokes, don't know if they still do, but I could really do with some nice non-stick clothing Grin

theanimalswentintwobytwo · 25/05/2011 22:29

I love dark blue denim and black.

I would never:
crocs
skelts (skirts as short as a belt)
shoulder pads
socks with sandals
boob tubes
string vests (just nasty)

InAStateOfReflux · 25/05/2011 22:39

My dp asked me the other day, "do women who wear boob tubes actually think they look good in them?". This coming from a man. That's how bad they are.

teafortwo · 25/05/2011 22:49

Ha ha ha - d'ya know this setting rules for yourself starts early...

"Mummy, do you know I am NEVER going to wear... socks with... flip flops!"

  • dd aged 5 decided today!

BUT... later on in the day continuing with the theme she came to the conclusion that cowboy chaps with no trousers or knickers underneath are "quite fine for just for around the house."

I have to excuse DH his fleece to the restaurant (never in the 24 years have I known him own a coat that isn't a fleece or a practical waterproof). BUT it gets taken straight off and left the hooks by the door.

(He drives from home to right outside his office and rarely even bothers with his suit jacket let alone a posh coat)

Oh and can I also put a vote for waterfall cardigans. I thought DD1 might look good in one. She tried on several and burst into fits of giggles and said "I look like a bird". She did and she's a tallish size 12. Most of the ladies I've seen wearing them are at least my size and look badly stuffed ducks.

startail · 25/05/2011 22:58

Sorry I should have previewed that Blush, my computer is lagging behind my typing.

Jonnyfan · 25/05/2011 23:19

Will not wear/have recently binned;

tan tights
leggings with short tops (revolting)
gathered skirts
bra/bra straps showing
shorts (:()
old-lady prints
elastic waists
flat shoes
trainers
shell suits
waterfall cardigans
polyester
thongs
pink
any garment larger than size 14

Bohica · 25/05/2011 23:27

Grin @ jonny I've also recently binned Grin

Jonnyfan · 25/05/2011 23:41

'tis liberating!

Granard · 26/05/2011 14:28

I would never wear what half the women wore to meet the Queen in Dublin Castle last week.

I've never seen so much flesh exposed, much of it back fat and flab hanging over the back of strapless dresses.

These women must have no mirrors in their houses, no friends to say "what on earth are you wearing," and no clue as to appropriate dress to meet the Queen!

Beesok · 28/05/2011 15:52

This thread is great ;)

OK here are mine:
elegant leather bag with gym clothes and vice versa
juicy couture tracksuits with "juicy" on bum or equivalents - HORRIBLE
clothes that are too tight, I mean who will know if you go a size up??!?
overload of swarovski crystals
exposed toes without a pedicure or nails with chipped nail polish blah
underwear poking out - bra straps, thongs etc - I mean seriously?

:)
