wear open toed shoes with tights

wear navy blue with black

Wear a denim jacket with jeans, even if the denims were different colours

show my midriff (am 36 - too old for such things) - apart from in bikini on hols

go bare legged to the office

I have to mention that yellow gold is the ONLY kind....in 30 years all of those white gold engagment rings will be dated!

LRDTheFeministDragon · 24/05/2011 10:02

Agree about double denim - I don't know if this was true everywhere in the early 90s, but certainly near Nottingham where I grew up, there was a very strange fashion for treating a denim skirt and denim jacket (the ones cut like a blouson, not a fitted one) as an alternative to a suit if you couldn't afford one. Ouch.

Also, for me:

  • Leggings, unless worn like tights. Remember them the first time around.
  • Dark knickers and white dress (yes, trendy girl in the library, you ...)
  • flip-flops unless you're on the beach
  • Jeans too small so the zip is permanently at half-mast: why do some women do this?! It looks awful and I don't want to see you constantly picking at your crotch area to pull them together - just buy a bloody size up.
  • Ripped opaque tights. Very trendy with miniskirts around here.
  • Pointy-toe shoes. Yuck. You look as if you took a cleaver to your feet.

I don't mind bare legs or a very small number of Clarks shows in the right context (they're good if you're walking somewhere rough but not hiking-boot rough).

The worst thing is wearing 'off' perfume - can't you smell it's off?! Confused

polyhymnia · 24/05/2011 10:05

I'm large and I'd never wear a short T-shirt/top with trousers, thus showing either my flabby midriff, or even the dreaded camel's toe. Tops need to be over the crotch and tunics at least mid-thigh.

I personally don't do sleeveless either. I definitely think there are large women who have upper arms which are toned enough, and/or youthful enough-looking, to go sleeveless - ie, I'd never say 'noone of size 20, or whatever, should do it' - but it's not for me.

Also wouldn't buy a cheap, droopy bra that doesn't support me and make my clothes look as good as possible.

Or wear a waterfall cardigan.

Or any loose, tent-like garment with no definition at waist.

Or wide, flappy trousers that make my legs look vast when they're not.

Like black and navy.

Bare legs in office also fine, as long as not hairy - but do agree with Dilys about too much knee on show.

AlpinePony · 24/05/2011 10:06

Wide feet in narrow shoes. I have feet shaped like a duck's. I wear pretty shoes, but these cannot be narrow across the sole otherwise I look like the ubiquitous "Ugly Sister". :(

BulletWithAName · 24/05/2011 10:07

Polyhymnia- I hate seeing larger women wearing shapeless, tent-like clothes. I wish someone would tell them that an item that nips in the waist or gives a bit of definition is so much more flattering!

polyhymnia · 24/05/2011 10:11

Oh, also wear pastels and yellow gold apart from my wedding and engagement rings. Not actually a lover of 'classic' looking jewellery at all.

So far, wouldn't wear Clarks shoes either - though people on here do find some that look Ok, but don't make it to my local Clark's.

Finally, wear too much make-up - very aging, certainly if you're 'mature' - eg,heavy, powdery foundation, bright lipsticks, spiky, obvious mascara.

monstersX2 · 24/05/2011 10:14

I would never not wear a bra perky or not and leggings with a short top... big no no!
Also 'oversized' clothes, do they flatter anyone??
I do however wear back with navy.

Cattleprod · 24/05/2011 10:14

Pale coloured linen trousers, especially with a pair of brightly coloured patterned apple-catcher knickers underneath.
A blouse, particularly in that polyester/nylon/fake silk material with a twee motif on the pocket and a hanky tucked up the sleeve.
Harem pants. I'm not m c hammer.
Ballet pumps. They make your arse look huge.
Gingham.
Those big shapeless jumpers with cats or horses on the front.
Maternity dungarees.
Jogging trousers with elastic round the ankles.
A belt worn just under the norks, rather than round the waist where it should be. Normally teenage girls do this.
Men in briefs.

polyhymnia · 24/05/2011 10:15

Bullet I'm doing my bit - always preaching the point you make. But sadly some large women seem to believe that this 'hides a multitude of sins' as they'd no doubt say. Even a pricy online plus-size retailer (Spirito, a pet hate of mine) - has loads of baggy, over-sized things. Grrrr.

kickingking · 24/05/2011 10:16

Leggings should only be black, and worn like tights under a dress. The dress can be a bit shorter than you would wear with tights though.

Never wear a dress with bootcut trousers or jeans - for some reason large ladies seem to think this is a good idea. It's not.

Shoes with very pointy toes, especially poking out from under bootcut trosuers - nasty.

Outdoorsy clothing at all times. I have husband who thinks taking me out to dinner in a Mountain Hardware fleece is OK Hmm and most of his female friends dress like that as well.

WowOoo · 24/05/2011 10:20

Those pointy shoes that men wear look horrible too. Looks like they're trying to make their feet look bigger.

I agree heavy heavy make up looks terrible on any woman. I think it's quite sad when you see a teenager or young woman like that.

Some black and navy OK for me. Depends on what it is really.

Bare legs OK in our office as long as it's not with super short skirt.

bonnetarte · 24/05/2011 10:21

3/4 length trousers with a smart jacket seems to be de riguer at work just now and it looks daft.
double denim is just wrong IMHO
fake tan in January
apricot/germolene/peach in any form ( i know its fashionable but I am blond and it does nothing for me)

Cattleprod · 24/05/2011 10:23

Oh, and those strange horn-rimmed glasses with the thick, often jewel-encrusted arms that seem popular at the moment. The sort with lenses that are only about an inch high so you have to kind of peer down your nose in a sneery way to be able to see anything.

idratherbeboarding · 24/05/2011 10:24

Navy and black can be v stylish; it's an out dated 'rule' that you can't wear them together.

Bare legs in the office - what else would you wear in the summer? American tan or 'nude' tights - eughgh! Lightly tanned and slim legs look chic and gorgeous when wearing business attire. I will be bare legged all summer and work in a very professional City based environment.

Intend to wear a bikini for as long as I have a toned stomach, I'm nearly 37 and not putting an age on when I stop.

Agree with Charitygirl - cowboy boots are bloody awful.

CaptainJackSparrowIsMine · 24/05/2011 10:26

Leggings with a short top. NO. One of my friends has fabulous legs and decent stomach but even she can't get away with it.

bonnetarte · 24/05/2011 10:27

ooh and doing 80's look second time around.
I did it last time and it looked shit then.
hate those Buggles red glasses

SummerRain · 24/05/2011 10:35

mumbling my parents were married with white gold bands 30 years ago and it hasn't dated yet Hmm I just hate the look of yellow gold... prefer silver or wite gold as it looks so much nicer.

Toatally agree about pointy shoes... hate them and would never wear them. They just don't flatter anyone

SummerRain · 24/05/2011 10:37

white

52Girls · 24/05/2011 10:39

Yellow gold is far more flattering.

OsbegaEthelwulf · 24/05/2011 10:43

cattleprod I hate those glasses as well- makes any wearer look sneaky but it appears from my local opticians that most are like this nowadays

TheGoddessBlossom · 24/05/2011 10:45

Come off it - pale white legs, or worse still, badly applied fake tanned legs, and court shoes, under a suit or work clothes. Bad bad bad. I wear stockings or tights - even on the hottest UK days, offices are airconditioned, and it's not like your legs sweat! And your feet get hot anyway! Have never felt hotter than I otherwise would when wearing stockings.

Don't do gold jewellery, pastels, lots of the above.

OP posts:
BulletWithAName · 24/05/2011 10:49

I love gold costume jewellery.

symmetrymum · 24/05/2011 10:52

Yellow gold is fine so long as it's not overdone (countless chains or rings) or mixed with silver or white gold jewellery.

Also, it's naff to wear big dangly earrings with a big chunky necklace. One or the other is fine on it's own but not together! Likewise, big cocktail rings do not look good with a stack of bangles or bracelets.

SummerRain · 24/05/2011 11:11

52girls... to some skin tones yes. Not to all

52Girls · 24/05/2011 11:19

Goes for white gold too, summerrain. It does nothing for me.
