It is a difficult balance isn’t it between the rights of the player to want to have a chance to win the champions league/play in the champions league and the clubs not being disrupted. Which is where the transfer window works well.

We don’t want it to be like the NBA where in the middle of a season a player can be moved from the Mavericks to the Lakers (although football does I think miss that drama a bit)

So clubs need to be realistic but also be able to forward plan. Personally I think he may well still go once a replacement is found but the price tag needs to be realistic for me it’s 140 max

Brefugee · 04/08/2025 17:56

if i have just understood the latest Sky ad here, i will be able to watch the Championship over here 😁So assuming Wednesday survive i'll be able to watch them.

Was just saying to DH I can't wait for the season to start.

The cricket almost gave me a heart attack today so it's a good warm up for the football 😂

Very interesting that Eddie Howe has said this about the Isak situation with training at Newcastle:

"You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad - you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal."

I agree with what Howe has said - applies to every club, surely, not just Newcastle. But isn't it rather hypocritical to say that in the Isak context when Yoane Wissa is apparently threatening Brentford with going on strike if they don't let him move to Newcastle?

I don’t necessarily think it’s hypocritical of Howe to say it, for Wissa to say it, perhaps, but I doubt Howe has encouraged him not to train/play in pre season for Brentford. I think if you have a contract with a club then you should honour that and that goes for everybody. Equally I think clubs should honour ‘gentlemen’s agreements’ which it seems there has perhaps been a lack of on both Newcastle and Brentford’s part leading to unrest. But a contract is a contract.

Thanks for the new thread, Duncin! Also, out of curiosity, what does your username mean? I’ve been curious for a while haha.

Also, here’s a link for setting up a fantasy football team and league, in case anyone is still keen for us to have a FF league this season! - fantasy.premierleague.com

This just takes me to the home page and not the league.

Sorry! I hadn’t set up a new league yet, but I’ve just renewed our old league, so hopefully everyone who was in that league has now got an invite. If anyone new would like to join, please PM me and I’ll add you to it 😊

I am in, will probably change my team name a few times more.

My neighbour has travelled from Kent for that game, he enjoys ticking off the different stadiums/teams. Missed the watching the Gills for it Grin

First home game for Gillingham, they won against Walsall with the only goal coming from Bradley Dack. Great feeling to be back in the stands again.

A proper striker's goal! We haven't seen one of those for a while...

Brefugee · 09/08/2025 20:25

Gladbach played a friendly against Brentford yestarday evening - streamed live on the Brentford website, so i could watch. Pretty good match, not just a kick around, and it ended 2-2. Today they had a (behind closed doors) rematch which Gladbach won 2-1.

Wednesday is still an utter horrorshow. Am still devastated.

Yes and then two come along at once! Havertz's goal was brilliant as well.

And Saka's goal was a brilliant team goal.

TheNewGaard · 09/08/2025 21:39

A good Martinelli assist too.

I'm seeing to much hate on him at the moment.

Yes, fans are so fickle. They were moaning about Noni and now suddenly they prefer him to Martinelli.

But I do find the Martinelli just does the same thing all the time and usually gets nowhere. I think having Victor there as well will help him as they can swap positions like they did today.

I think half the reason Martinelli hasn't looked so good recently is because he's been basically left to fend for himself on the left wing. Saka gets support from Ben White (or Timber) and Ødegaard, but he gets nothing. He seems to have got a little more recently, so hopefully we'll see a bit of a revival.

People also forget how much defensive work he does.

Brefugee · 09/08/2025 21:59

just checked the lineup, not on the team sheet and not on the subs bench.

ETA: that was for @MustTryHarderAndHarder about Wissa

Yes. that is a good point. Merino does help a bit but that is about it.

MrsMitford3 · 09/08/2025 22:35

So chuffed for martinelli assist.
Don't be distracted by the shiny new toys- Martinelli has a lot to give.
Zubimendi a bloody delight
Kai's goal stupendous- saw on twitter-Viktor scored a Kai goal and kai scored a Viktor goal.
How fab is that-strength in depth is why we didn't win the league last year...
Great way to enter what is going to be a very exciting season!!

Bravo to Mo Salah for calling out UEFA for their inadequate and crass "farewell" to a legend of Palestinian football who was killed in Gaza, by asking UEFA to clarify, "Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?"
