This activity is now closed

A sturdy backpack that can take pretty much anything you throw in it and also looks stylish, is often a must-have for both parents and children alike. HYPE would love you or your DC to take a look at their website not only choose your favourite backpack but also share what your backpack essentials are.

Here’s what HYPE have to say: “You’ll make heads turn and jealousy begin with a HYPE bag in hand. Our backpacks are perfect for those days when you’ve got the world to carry on your back, literally, for every moment. Whether you're packing your go-to flight essentials or your DC is heading to their mates for a sleepover, our backpacks are here for every occasion! Our most-sought-after Black with white speckle is for those who like things a little subtler. Sizing at 41 x 31cm our backpacks are the perfect size to keep all of your essentials in one safe place. Want something a bit louder? Choose from our current best-seller, the all over mature floral print or the classic holographic.”

Take a look at the HYPE website here and select yours or your DCs favourite backpack and post it on the thread (ideally with a link for everyone interested in your favourite).

We would also love to know what yours or your DCs backpack essentials are. Do you have to have a backpack with as many pockets as possible to fit all your little bit and bobs in? Perhaps your DC is all about how the bag looks and which backpack will make them stand out the most? Or maybe you have to have a backpack that is spacious enough to fit every single thing you own in it?

Tell us yours or your DC’s backpack essentials, as well as your favourite HYPE backpack from their website and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list). Plus HYPE will also be giving 4 MNers their favourite backpack that they selected from the site!

Thanks and good luck!

my DS looked at the bags and selected this www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-navy-ocean-fade-backpack he loved the colour which matches his new football boots and smiled and said would be great to take to football training mum. So I bought it and it's on its way...

InMySpareTime · 17/03/2018 08:10

When it comes to bags, the blacker the better chez Sparetime!
DD likes adding patches to her bag to personalise it, so usually has canvas bags.
Needs to hold a lot of A4 as they tend to carry not only the day's books but subjects they need to check homework for, things they don't want to forget the next day etc.
Needs to be waterproof, at least top and bottom, without disintegrating into plasticky shreds within weeks.
Zips needs to be strong, that's usually where bag tears start.
Needs a "crisp pocket" that won't get crushed by books.

www.justhype.co.uk/bags/backpacks/plain-backpacks/hype-black-insignia-backpack
This'd do it, thought he top handle looks a bit small.

Helspopje · 17/03/2018 09:23

I'm a paediatric consultant and known as 'the glittery dr' by some of my patients

Stethoscope
Money/cashcard
Phone
Pens
Notebook
Pager
Lanyard and ID badge
Sooooo many keys
Flashdrive

'Lucky' tourniquet
Water bottle

www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-navy-space-patch-backpack

This one is really cool, my son, 4, loves space and to be honest I love it too. Like the details on the badges.
I think backpacks need to be :
Easily both wipe clean and survive the odd washing machine wash
Have a cool box silvery stuff compartment , to keep butties cool for a picnic
Have a padded area for extra safety and protection of things like phones
Zipped pockets inside for security
Whistle on straps to blow if lost
Slide in strip you can write your details on
A different design so it's easily located in a pile at school
Waterproof outer.
Compartment for water bottle

Sierra259 · 17/03/2018 09:37

I really liked this one
www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-grey-primary-splat-backpack

I like a separate few compartments so that I can get to things like travel cards/tickets, my phone and wallet easily, without having to rummage right to the bottom of the main bag. Waterproof lining is important too for the inevitable drink/snack leaks! Back pack essentials are baby wipes, tissues, change of underwear/trousers for the DC in case of accidents (both 5 and under), snacks and something to keep the kids entertained - colouring/activity book etc.

agentdaisy · 17/03/2018 11:29

Dd is torn between this one www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-multi-supernova-backpack-traveller as it would be great for hiking/camping with Scouts and this one www.justhype.co.uk/bags/backpacks/hype-silver-holographic-backpack because she likes the fabric and look of the bag.

My favourite is this one
www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-black-reflective-backpack-rolltop I like the style and look, the reflective top would be great for walking in the dark and the water resistant roll top design. I'm at uni and there's nothing more annoying than having to walk to lectures in the rain then pulling your books out of your bag to find them soggy at the top.

My dc's are all Scouts so their backpacks need to be able to take a bashing along with a hefty dose of mud and rain. Ripstop fabric and waterproof are huge pluses when they need a new backpack, along with decent sized pockets and comfy straps.

Plenty of pockets, both inside and out for snacks/water bottle/book/pens are a must. Having a hidden pocket in the back of the backpack for a wallet or purse that makes it impossible for pickpockets to access without you feeling it would be brilliant but very few backpacks have this.

A keyring inside the backpack to attach house keys is a god send for kids that lose things and saves rummaging around the bag for house keys.

Reflective fabric or designs, like the reflective speckled design here www.justhype.co.uk/bags/backpacks/hype-black-with-white-and-reflective-speckle-backpack are brilliant for kids that have to wear dark school uniform and walk home after dark during the winter. Much better than the old fashioned yellow reflector strips that were around when I was a kid.

The above features would be brilliant but the most important features is a backpack with comfy straps that will comfortably hold an a4 binder plus a couple of books, pencil case, notebook, purse and drink. So many school bags won't fit a binder let alone everything else kids are supposed to take to school every day. Having a waterproof zip would be fantastic for walking to school in the rain, every backpack my dcs have had have been useless in the rain as their books end up soggy from the water getting through the zip.

www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-black-with-white-and-reflective-speckle-backpack
This is my 7 year old's favourite.

I like a bag with lots of separate compartments and pockets so I can easily find things. My essentials are tissues, snacks, carrier bag and phone. And a bottle of water

Didiusfalco · 17/03/2018 12:50

I love a good backpack and own several. I particularly like this one
www.justhype.co.uk/bags/backpacks/plain-backpacks/hype-badge-backpack-0728d9 which would be a great colour for me.
At the moment I use backpacks for child essentials so, nappies, wipes, spare clothes, drinks, paper, crayons etc. I find a backpack much more practical than a changing bag. I like a backpack that has compartments for smaller items such as a phone or headphones too.

Pinklady1981 · 17/03/2018 13:45

I have chosen on behalf of my 8yr old son. He would love the silver camo backpack 🎒.
www.justhype.co.uk/hype-silver-camo-backpack
This would be perfect for school and his essentials would be: pens, pencils, notepad, school books,PE kit, homework, lunchbox. And if we go for a day out it would be: pens, pencils, notepad, lunch, snacks, bug catcher, magnifying glass and binoculars!

Raahh · 17/03/2018 14:41

DD1 (11) had a similar one to this one here and her brother had a black one with multi speckles. They are the perfect size for fitting pretty much everything in for secondary school. They fit laptops too (wgich ds has to use) but importantly aren't heavy before you even put anything in them, which we have found with some. Since ds uses his bike to school, this is essential.

We love hype bags- they last ages.DD1 also loves the clothes, and has sweatshirts and leggings.

DD2 (7) doesn't have one Grin so she has chosen this one as our favourite [[https://www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-pink-western-backpack
favourite tassles]] Grin because she loves the tassles. And pink. (I would be very tempted to borrow it).

crazymumofthree · 17/03/2018 14:46

I like the pastel stroke backpack however would love the win the ocean fade backpack for my DH.

Both of our boys are diabetic so we always carry a backpack with us even if we just pop to the shops with their cases and snacks etc. So far we have been through a couple and the boys have only been diagnosed 1 year and the other 6 months and at the moment our current backpack is pink so I end up carrying it everywhere (rookie mistake!!) I would love my DH to win one of these so he can carry the stuff on family days out in style!

wonkylegs · 17/03/2018 16:30

The kids would love loads of them but I like www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-blue-gridwork-backpack

I carry a bag when we go on day trips for snacks, wet wipes, bribery, gloves, sunscreen etc
So a couple of pockets, internal pocket for keys & purse, not to big but not too small, comfortable and easy zips as I hate having to fiddle about when I've got cold hands

WowOoo · 17/03/2018 16:30

I know my son would like this one as he loves patches on things.
www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-sand-camping-backpack

joggingrunning · 17/03/2018 16:52

My favourite HYPE bag is the 'HYPE Floral backpack' , which can be found here .

My backpack essentials are: my phone, a little money bag, a bottle of water and a pencil case.

OutsideContextProblem · 17/03/2018 17:00

I need a bag to transport my laptop to and from work and so it has to be fairly neutral so I'd go for something like this.

www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-woven-tab-backpack-e96a2d
Annoying that the website doesn't show the inside or the dimensions.

My essentials for the DC are an outside waterbottle pocket, sturdy straps and enough space to fit an A4 folder.

like7 · 17/03/2018 19:11

Favourite is the airforce blue one with the black speckle.
www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-airforce-one-with-black-speckle-backpack
In my rucksack I keep carrier bags to be environmentally friendly when I stop to shop. Brush, purse, water or iced coffee if on a journey, something to read

FleurDelacoeur · 17/03/2018 19:13

www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-camo-reversible-backpack

Definitely my favourite and my son's too - such a clever design! I look for a backpack which is well made and sturdy, with zips which won't break in five minutes flat. Lots of space for either school books and packed lunch, or my gym kit, phone, purse etc. Nice wide shoulder straps which don't cut into you. And funky, modern designs.

RhubarbAndCustards · 17/03/2018 19:49

DD loves this one www.justhype.co.uk/bags/backpacks/holographic-backpacks/hype-pink-holographic-backpack-28dc1f

Must haves include a place to add several key rings, a pocket for “secret things” and space for all her stuff.

foxessocks · 17/03/2018 19:53

www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-burgundy-sunrise-rose-backpack

I like this one. My dc are still at the age of having spare pants in their backpack!Grin i want something fashionable yet useful!

ny20005 · 17/03/2018 20:52

www.justhype.co.uk/hype-cosmo-backpack

My dc's favourite !

Backpack essentials:

Outside pocket for water bottle so doesn't spill in the bag

Place for key chain to attach to bag so they don't lose it

Pockets & sections to put stuff

Comfy straps & padding at the back so books don't poke through

Pixie2015 · 17/03/2018 21:32

www.justhype.co.uk/bags/backpacks/hype-navy-with-metallic-blue-speckle-diamond-quilted-backpack

DS chose the blue metallic speckle as his favourite as it made him think of winter skies.

Back pack essentials are snack, juice, wallet, mobile, book and bits of paper with football lists on !

exLtEveDallas · 17/03/2018 21:34

DD is currently using the mint green with white splatter as her school bag - not the best colour choice but thankfully I discovered that it washes really well at 40 degrees!

I bought myself the blue bandana - which was swiftly appropriated by her 'for sleepovers'

Current favourite (me) is Abstract Rose
Current favourite (DD) is Beach

I'd like an outside water bottle pocket, but DD isn't too fussed. All she really needs is enough room for an A4 folder, lunchbox, pencil case and book - all of which the Hype bags have. She regularly overfills hers and it is still going strong, even the zips, so I am impressed. Cheaper than her last one as well.

Oh, tell you what, I have thought of something. DDs old bag had a zipped waterproof compartment at the bottom for her smelly dirty trainers. That was fab. I'd be sure to stick with Hype if that was an addition.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 17/03/2018 21:47

www.justhype.co.uk/bags/hype-multi-supernova-backpack-traveller

I like this larger backpack for weekend trips. It looks comfortable, little pocket for valuables and it looks sturdy. I like an eye catching design for travel so I can see my bag easily.

Backpack essentials are ergonomic straps, easy to open it out so I'm not really around at the bottom of the bag, valuables pocket.

ChoccyJules · 17/03/2018 22:54

I ummed and ah-ed between two designs but it's going to have to be www.justhype.co.uk/hype-multi-skeggy-backpack for the nostalgia and the fact it is a subtle but interesting design.
In terms of essentials, as a geocacher I would always have a pen and a spare pen Wink
A good bag should have at least one zipped inside pocket and preferably a waterproof section.
