Awake with newborn, anyone else? :)

My little boy is nine days old. He sleeps pretty well during the day but at night just wants to be held and breastfed. He doesn't settle in his moses basket at night (but he will quite often do so during the day)

Anyone else up doing the same?! I'm not keen on the idea of co-sleeping but would be grateful for any advice. Baby sleeps in a gro-snug and we have a dream sheep but I'm guessing this frequent feeding and love of cuddles in the night is probably just par for the course at this early stage? 😊 I am napping during the day so I'm probably averaging about 6 hrs sleep in a 24 hr period.

Aww Dexter 💕

Jellybabie3 · 07/11/2017 22:18

I agree the cuteness is a killer. Mines a little toad/heartbreaker

NinaMarieP · 07/11/2017 22:25

It’s a protective mechanism. Nobody can get mad about being woken up (again) when they get this face at 3am:

@NinaMarieP Smile adorable
completely agree. cuteness is a very clever design feature

my cute sleep/milk monster is 5 weeks. how did that happen? 5 weeks of extreme sleep deprivation (can see why it's used as a form of torture)

NinaMarieP · 08/11/2017 02:13

I think he might have been brewing up a dirty nappy at that point just to add insult to injury! Would explain the cheeky look. Grin

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 03:01

It is a good job they are cute isn’t it!
Mine is 9 weeks now. He’s soundo in his snuzpod but fidgety. Thank goodness for sleeping bags because he’d have kicked off any blanket several tunes a minute.
I’m tempted to pick him up to break the cycle and perhaps help release any wind that might be causing him to be restless.

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 03:02

@NinaMarieP I’m waiting for mine to do his weekly poo. Due any moment now 😬.

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 03:15

He was so restless I picked him up. And now he’s cuddling me and so peaceful 😍
Love him and his cuddles so much

Jellybabie3 · 08/11/2017 03:20

Aww hashtag - was it wind? Your braver than me waking him Grin

Jellybabie3 · 08/11/2017 03:21

Btw thanks all!! Just lovely getting a reminder why we do it!

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 03:23

I know! I did think it was a bit stupid but neither of us was going to get any quality sleep with that amount of shuffling!
No wind. Just beautiful cuddles. Im such a sucker for cuddles.

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 03:23

Oh. He just did a big fart. That might help.

sleepycat13 · 08/11/2017 03:44

@HashtagTired bless him!!
I always wonder what to do when the shuffled and stirring starts. my DS can't seem to go much more than an hour or so before he starts wriggling and then rooting for food but I suspect that sometimes he isn't really hungry. never know whether to leave him, feed him or just try and settle without food (he refuses a dummy). what does everyone else do?

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 03:47

@sleepycat13 same here. I thought no it’s comfort a lot of the time so he only takes a little bit but that means he’s hungry again in an hour or twos time. So he’s a constant feeder. I was awake so I went for the cuddle. If I’m tired enough we’d both sleep through it. Depends on how tired I am.
Sometimes I just put on Ewan the dream sheep to help cancel out the shuffling.

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 03:52

I’ve just put him down now and he’s so much more settled. Only thing is it’s coming up to two hours with feeds so he’ll wake in the next 30 mins. Not sure whether to try and sleep 💤 or wait... there’s little more torturous that just drifting off and being woken up. I’d rather spend at awake. But knowing my luck he’ll do another 4 hour stint..... going for the sleep option. Night!

GinUnicorn · 08/11/2017 03:59

Good luck hashtag x

AnnaL82 · 08/11/2017 04:24

17 weeks here so not exactly a newborn but

  • still unsettled by his 16 weeks jabs
  • could and cough
  • teething
  • 4 month regression
All together.

Slept 11.30 to 1.30, attempts to put him back down until 2.30, bottle, half an hour nap and here I am on the armchair with him on my chest. My back hurts too much to persevere with bed, I give up.

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 04:40

Up again. He went 2 hours 40 which altogether isn’t too bad for him. I got 30 mins sleep which was more than I thought. My fault for staying up! Anyway. He’s always more unsettled this time of night so not sure if I’ll get more sleep.

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 04:42

@AnnaL82 I’m currently not too bothered about the sleep regression thing as I don’t think he ever had it to lose it! Night before last he was hourly. But to be fair he had just had his jabs poor mite.

Never mind, it’s nearly morning now! Hope you do get some rest though. And hope your back gets better.

NinaMarieP · 08/11/2017 06:14

Ooh I’d never dare wake him up to wind him! I have white noise playing all night and listen to an audio book to help drown out the noises he makes when he’s asleep.

I found that giving him infacol helped as well, making sure he brings up as much wind that way reduces how much pumping and squirming he does later.

AMagdalena · 08/11/2017 06:58

Well, I tried to put DD down in her crib. She was having none of it!

And she won't let DH settle her at all. Just screams for me. Must be a developmental stage...

Lovingtyrells · 08/11/2017 07:39

Mine is 10 weeks, never slept in the v expensive cot Blush won’t sleep on his back and hasn’t slept more than 2 hours since birth !

HashtagTired · 08/11/2017 08:16

@Lovingtyrells doesn’t he realise how expensive cots can be??
Mine took a while to accept the snuzpod but I was determined lol! He just about tolerates it now! Lol

Jellybabie3 · 08/11/2017 08:30

Morning all. Ds now awake. Only woke twice since 11pm. Did a four hour stint which is a record for him although i got less as i checked he was still breathing after three!! Woke again at 6ish although did the same as yours hashtag writhing and grunting for ages although still asleep. Gave up and picked him up much to dh's bemusement. 10min later he had a gigantic poo. Still sounds very wheezy so not convinced hes shifted the chest fluid from birth (c section). Bloody hate hearing his chest rattle. 2 weeks til 6 week check up so will bring it up then. Mind you my gp is crap
