Awake with newborn, anyone else? :)

My little boy is nine days old. He sleeps pretty well during the day but at night just wants to be held and breastfed. He doesn't settle in his moses basket at night (but he will quite often do so during the day)

Anyone else up doing the same?! I'm not keen on the idea of co-sleeping but would be grateful for any advice. Baby sleeps in a gro-snug and we have a dream sheep but I'm guessing this frequent feeding and love of cuddles in the night is probably just par for the course at this early stage? 😊 I am napping during the day so I'm probably averaging about 6 hrs sleep in a 24 hr period.

Feed #2
I think snot woke him up.

Meepmoop · 05/11/2017 03:12

Can I join, not sure what's up with my LO (3 1/2 months) but so far he's only managed 1 1/2 hours of sleep. I put him down and he wakes after 20/30 mins. I've given up on the idea of getting any sleep tonight.

GimbleInTheWabe · 05/11/2017 03:19

Well I’m Sat in the front room on the most uncomfortable chair so that I don’t fall asleep whilst feeding DS. We’re both bunged up annoyingly.

Could that be a teething problem @Meepmoop? Not sure when they start to come through. Welcome!

Meepmoop · 05/11/2017 03:24

Maybe he had had his fingers in his mouth a lot but he's been doing that for a while. I'm hoping this is a blip and we'll be back to 2/3 wake ups in the night.

It is horrible trying not to fall asleep while feeding!
'Luckily' my DH is snoring away next to me to keep me awake. (Really not my night)

Jellybabie3 · 05/11/2017 04:18

I agree RE falling asleep....sooooo hard especially with all the soft lighting and noises. Babys are so warm too....delicious but doesn't help!

Not sure if i count as feed 1 or 2....ds went down at 11pm tonight (at firework do) and woke around 2ish. Hes been fed and nodded off but every time i go to put down hes either thrown up or so far done two giant poo's Confused so needed changing.....Angry he sounds chesty/raspy too which is worrying

HashtagTired · 05/11/2017 04:29

This one hasn’t really settled after feed #2 so we’re having cuddles. Wind/snot/sneeze/cough. That’s his cycle and it’s keeping him awake, and now it’s keeping me awake!

HashtagTired · 05/11/2017 04:30

@Meepmoop Teething pain apparently occurs long before they actually show. It’s all that moving about. So it could be that, who really knows?!

IheartCaptainHolt · 05/11/2017 04:40

If your baby is snotty and you are breastfeeding, try squirting some of your milk up their nose.
It’s a bit tricky to do, but it makes them sneeze and loads of snot comes out. I’ve done it with both my boys and it really helped. They both looked completely outraged that I’d waste milk like that but needs must when you are all trying to sleep!

Ceesadoo · 05/11/2017 04:55

Baby won’t settle back down after 3am feed so I’m watching Emily Norris videos on YouTube. She has 3 kids and seems to have her shit together so hard.

sleepycat13 · 05/11/2017 06:00

I can also recommend the happy mum happy baby podcasts by Giovanni Fletcher for night feed entertainment if you haven't already listened to these.

thanks Jellybean might give the grow snug a go. my lo is 1 month old. reckon this is still early enough?

I caved and decided to lie down in bed with baby on my chest for a bit. he slept soundly for 2.5 hours and i managed to get a light sleep during that time. really not what I wanted to do but needed some rest.

HashtagTired · 05/11/2017 08:23

@sleepycat13 same here. He slept so soundly on my chest.

GinUnicorn · 06/11/2017 02:51

And we are up! She went down at 1030 though so calling this a win!

HashtagTired · 06/11/2017 03:13

This one isn’t settling much tonight. Been up since midnight trying to get him to settle anywhere but on me.

I’m torn. I love the cuddles. I love my sleep. I love the idea of him sleeping soundly in his crib so I could get some quality sleep in!

Jellybean2017 · 06/11/2017 06:02

Well done Gin!

Similar story here. Wouldn't even tolerate being laid beside me to co sleep so I have had to lean back on pillows with him laying across me all night 😔 exhausted.

Sounds rough Sad

My ds slept for 2 hours went back down. Next feed i changed him, fed him for an hour laid down in bed. Waited for him to drop off. Lifted him to put in side cot to find he had a leaky nappy Sad wee all over the bed. Another half hour of settling... Now on next feed which has come after a failed attempt to lift him asleep into cot. Hes just puked.....

He sounds very rattley/wheezy on chest again. Like he needs to cough. Quite scary. Anyone else had this at 4 weeks old??

AMagdalena · 06/11/2017 11:55

Oh, Jellie, I 'love' those nights.
My DD has reflux, so I have to hold her for aaaages after a feed before I put her down. Stops her from puking all over her cot, though. Or my bed.

I think I need to stop being so lazy and start putting DD down in her cot after her 1st wake up.

Btw, do any of you manage to put your LO's to sleep in their cots instead of transferring them already asleep?

Jellybean2017 · 06/11/2017 13:58

AMagdalena DS has never slept in either of his cots :( so no, he won't be put down awake or drowsy. Not sure what the answer is as can't keep sitting up in bed all night!

OP posts:
Jellybabie3 · 06/11/2017 15:27

No sorry my DS gets transferred 99% of the time. I say 99% because he woke once over the weekend after i put him down and i panicked and cranked on ewan the sheep and he went to sleep. I took that as a victory!!

Lovingtyrells · 06/11/2017 15:52

Up every hour last night !
And slept in between on chest.
Has anyone managed to get the baby to sleep on their side ? Tried with mine today but he screamed same as back. People have told me will get better with age but he is almost 10 weeks now and it’s gotten worse since birth.

JustSaying99 · 06/11/2017 16:50

Can I join, in need of some support and reassurance that it’s not only my child!
DS is five weeks and his sleeping is so random and irregular; some nights he goes down at 9 and sleeps until 12/12:30, feeds/changed, back down until 3/4, repeat, and then that's him until morning. Other nights, like last Friday, Saturday and last night, he decided he didn’t want to sleep at all! He was awake all bight, maybe half and half whilst feeding (he is BF) but never actually asleep. Obviously this means no sleep for me or DH, which I can just about handle, but I’m worried that it’s relaly bad for him, he must be exhausted!! Is this normal?

Jellybabie3 · 06/11/2017 16:53

My ds sleeps on his side.
Won't sleep on back

AMagdalena · 06/11/2017 18:12

JustSaying Yup. Very normal. Unfortunately babies do what they want. And there is a growth spurt around 4-5weeks

Sorta glad it's not just me that can't settle their LO already in cot.
Will have to work on that in a few months' time, though...

HashtagTired · 07/11/2017 00:14

I’ve broken him. He used to sleep so well in his snuzpod on his back but over the last week he’s had a cold and his 8 weeks jabs so had lots of cuddles. Now won’t settle for anything less. Currently giving me grief whilst lying next to me.

I just want to sleep. Please let me sleep! (He’s probably saying the same thing to me...)

Jellybean2017 · 07/11/2017 00:21

Ahh Hashtag it must be so frustrating when things go downhill rather than improving :( we are awake too and sleep is looking unlikely! He's overtired :(

mummarosie1 · 07/11/2017 02:21

So frustrating when things get worse not better :(
My 3wo, until tonight, had somehow fallen into a circadian rhythm and only woke briefly for feeds from 8pm-8am... and then randomly yesterday she slept allllll day and surprise surprise has been up alllll night :( whyyyyyy
