Awake with newborn, anyone else? :)

My little boy is nine days old. He sleeps pretty well during the day but at night just wants to be held and breastfed. He doesn't settle in his moses basket at night (but he will quite often do so during the day)

Anyone else up doing the same?! I'm not keen on the idea of co-sleeping but would be grateful for any advice. Baby sleeps in a gro-snug and we have a dream sheep but I'm guessing this frequent feeding and love of cuddles in the night is probably just par for the course at this early stage? 😊 I am napping during the day so I'm probably averaging about 6 hrs sleep in a 24 hr period.

It really was. But here's hoping we won't need it so much tomorrow night, eh? 🤞

Jellybean2017 · 14/08/2017 08:27

Fingers crossed for us both! 😊

After almost two weeks of husband and I taking turns in the night (his turn seemed to be an hour, mine about 8 😂) I gave in and coslept. I looked into the safety of it and after the fist night I couldn't believe how easy and instinctive it was. I woke up in exactly the same position, curled around baby. It's not for everyone but it's worked for us. LO is 6 months and starts in her cot then comes into my bed after first night waking. I wouldn't have it any other way tbh.

HT85 · 14/08/2017 09:40

If you really think about it logically - a mother sleeping with her new little baby. It really isn't that scary. Scaremongering in the media (reporting the sad cases in which people haven't SAFELY coslept and tragically lost their baby) has had a very negative affect on everybody. When I fell asleep at 5am sitting up on the sofa with my daughter having fallen down the back of me, I knew I needed to do something quickly. Sleeping on a flat surface with no covers or pillows near baby was much safer than passing out from exhaustion.

Wish I had one 40 plus years ago !

NinaMarieP · 14/08/2017 21:27

I think the cluster may have started already this evening - before I have had a chance of an hour in bed. I'm kinda hoping this is it as the sooner it starts the sooner it could be over!

Lallypopstick · 14/08/2017 21:37

Checking in with my 3 week old. Last night he and I had the odd hour here and there. I'm currently feeding him from the second boob and wondering whether we might get to bed pre-midnight any time soon.

I've had a couple of bed sharing naps and noticed that I haven't moved at all from my start position. We have a snuzpod and cocoonababy which he normally settles in, though not always.

Good luck tonight!

Checking in with my 8 week old to say good luck tonight, everyone!

Some positive stories here (and some less positive, but we'll ignore them!).

Same here Nina, no nap for me. We have had two monster poos already too 🙈

Is a snuzpod / cocoon similar to Sleepyhead Lallypopstick? A friend has offered to lend a Sleepyhead to us so may give that a go tomorrow! Baby sleeps in his moses basket sometimes though so I don't think it's necessarily that..

Good luck to you all too!

Mine sleeps in a doomoo, OP. His sleep has been much better in it, and it's portable. I'm currently downstairs on the sofa bed with him in it. We're doing a night on, night off this week as DH is off work and DS is ff. He slept 10-4 and then till 7 for DH last night so sod's law he'll be awful for me tonight.

Jellybean2017 · 14/08/2017 22:42

Didn't realise there were all of these different sleeping things! I will have to Google the doomoo as well! Something to keep me amused whilst I'm awake tonight haha!

3 hours in and my fiancé has gone for a sleep. I figure I'll need him far more at 2 am than I do right now.

I have been using a muslin cloth as a swaddle to keep his hands out of the way when he latches as it helps us get there more quickly.

Think he has done something in his nappy in the last few minutes so next time he starts getting too sleepy to feed well I'll strip him, change him and start again!

Jellybean2017 · 15/08/2017 00:14

My husband is sound asleep, little one has just managed an hour asleep in moses basket during which time we all got some sleep although I kept waking every fifteen minutes to check on him! He is now feeding...

OP posts:
NinaMarieP · 15/08/2017 00:18

I thought I had done it at midnight as he had slept for ten whole minutes. So I eased him into a sleep suit and he woke up... two minutes back on the boob and he seems to be asleep again but he has explosively filled his nappy.

I hope if I change him and feed him again he'll go to sleep and I can attempt to put him in his Moses basket and sleep myself.

Jellybean2017 · 15/08/2017 00:30

Sounds good. I'm weighing up whether to put baby back in the basket as he has fallen asleep at the breast. He does this often though and tends to cry for more milk if I put him in basket...

Hello. I'm feeding my 4 day old who had decided that he'd had enough thanks, except one re-swaddled and back in Moses basket decided that that wasn't what he meant at all and needs more. Husband is snoring next to me. I don't mind that. He's been amazing and must be knackered too.

Lallypopstick · 15/08/2017 00:57

The snuzpod is a side cot with a zip down side that you can attach to the bed with a harness thing. At the moment, we have the cocoonababy mattress in which is like the sleepyhead. He's generally ok with it, but sometimes getting into a cold bed seems to wake him.

Tonight about half 10, he fell asleep in my lap, tried to move him to the snuzpod but he woke up pretty quickly. My OH took him and settled him to sleep, and I got a couple of hours which I needed. Feeding him now and ready for the long haul.

Jellybean2017 · 15/08/2017 01:09

Thanks for the snuzpod info! So many options! We are feeding again now after a 20 min cat nap! Think I'm in for the long haul now too! Congratulations on your new arrival ookmybanana 😊 it's good your husband is resting, hopefully he can then take over while you get some sleep later on, that's the tactic we have been using anyway 😊

I made it to bed at 1am after a nappy change and one more feed Grin

Fiancé is asleep on the sofa with baby in his basket beside him, giving me the whole bed to myself and a bit of peace.

Of course I'm up to the loo less than an hour after getting to bed but feeling pretty good none the less.

Hoping for a bit of sleep for everyone else! X

Jellybean2017 · 15/08/2017 01:47

Thank you! Enjoy your sleep!! X

I'm up for the 2am feed. DS didn't make it until 4am like he did for his dad! He's wife awake now too... This is not going to go well...

NinaMarieP · 15/08/2017 03:28

I'm up again as I made the huge mistake of forgetting my bedtime dose of painkillers and I woke up soaked in sweat and in pain Sad

Seems I'm doomed to rubbish sleep no matter what!

Jellybean2017 · 15/08/2017 03:39

We are up again too! Nappy change and feeding again! On the plus side it's nearly 4am so I will wake up my husband after this feed if the baby doesn't go back down in his basket. Seems like this could be a long feed though! Oh I know, the sweating, no one warned me about that!! 😨
