@drspouse this is always an option: Aquadome. You can get a bus: is about 50 mins

drspouse · 28/12/2017 19:48

Ooh that's v tempting!

DrRisotto · 28/12/2017 19:58

Hello! I've never joined in on a ski thread before but I am SUPER excited for my trip to Selva van Gardena in Italy at the beginning of March. I skied regularly until the age of 16 or so then didn't ski at all for 15 years. I went to a snow dome recently, terrified that I wouldn't know what I was doing but actually, it was like i'd never missed a season! Now i've just got to worry about leaving DH to bite the dust.

SinceWhenDid · 28/12/2017 20:11

Ooh lucky thing!

DrRisotto · 28/12/2017 20:28

Oh drspouse that sucks. You just can't predict stuff like that is going to happen.

Are we supposed to be preparing for this holiday in some way? Exercises? I'm clueless.

drspouse · 28/12/2017 20:46

DrRisotto I usually try to do a lot of stretching, especially hamstrings.
Actually a week of that well at least help a bit.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 28/12/2017 21:28

Oh nooooo Drspouse I'm really sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can manage a bit of gravity aided skiing and not suffer too much.

DrRisotto I try and have good fitness as it makes for more skiing. I run to strengthen my legs and it definitely helps.

tinytemper66 · 28/12/2017 21:34

Going to Waterville Valley in New Hampshire with 38 pupils and 4 other teachers! February half term! 50 days! So excited! Even bought my own boots!
Have fun everyone! 🎿❄️

snowgirl1 · 28/12/2017 23:52

Hello, can I join? We normally ski at Christmas but didn't this year for various reasons (which included really poor snow last Christmas). So I've been feeling a bit down about staying in grey wet UK for Xmas while the alps seems to have had the best start to the season for years.

DrRisotto · 29/12/2017 13:54

Ok thanks spouse and cunt, I'll plan on doing some exercises then! We bought boots recently and tested them out at the snow dome but need to go back and grey them adjusted as there were sore spots.

Where do you get your base layers, how much should we take for a week's skiing and do you have any tips for ski wear? We have the salopettes and jacket so it's just base layers and socks now.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 29/12/2017 19:06

March can vary quite a bit on temperature so I'd go prepared for cold, but not brutal cold IYSWIM. It won't be -25, but base, mid, jacket is likely needed. I get cold so tend to add another thick layer too. Only if it's really sunny do I strip off a layer. I avoid cotton as it can get wet and then makes you feel cold. I have merino layers from Aldi and they are brilliant. I would also use any gym gear you might have, it wicks moisture so works well.

A neck buff is a must. Good if cold. Stops burning your neck if it's hot.

A small back pack is also really useful for factor 50 and a water bottle.

I'm going end Feb/ early March and I can't wait!

bluetongue · 29/12/2017 22:32

I’m off on my trip in February. Can’t wait!

Will be heading to Japan with three days in Kyoto before flying north and skiing in Niseko. I live in Australia so all the good places to ski are a bit of a trek Sad

DrRisotto · 30/12/2017 21:47

Aldi eh?! I'll have a look asap Thanks x

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 31/12/2017 09:14

Checking in! Had a few days in3V just before Xmas-loads of snow this year unusually and another 1.5 metres dues this week a -so great conditions if anyone going in January!

FitBitFanClub · 31/12/2017 09:30

Aha! I've found my people. Back here with a name-change but recognise lots of you guys.
We've always done the Southern Alps in France, but are venturing north this year to Meribel in a catered chalet.
Can't wait, but dh is now dithering about coming, due to his dodgy knee. Dd is desperate to take his place. The trouble is, he refuses to take it easy and "pootle" for the week, and would insist on going hell-for-leather and then struggling to walk for months afterwards.

bluetongue · 31/12/2017 10:15

Firbit you will love Meribel. The skiing in 3 Valleys is amazing.

One day, when I have more money I’m going back there Grin

turkeyboots · 31/12/2017 10:16

We are off on Tuesday! Very excited but have had a stinking cold all Christmas and hoping it disappears by Wed morning. DH is obsessed with the snow reports which look amazing, but high winds as well in La Rosiere, which are a bit concerning for my beginner DCs.

DrRisotto · 01/01/2018 10:29

Oooh lucky you turkey! Fingers crossed your cold clears up too.

So I bought a 100% Merino wool base or mid layer in Aldi yesterday, great price. It is not exactly soft though is it? I found it to be quite scratchy...

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 02/01/2018 20:27

Very windy at the mo with warnings in the state raise for Weds and Thurs

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 02/01/2018 20:28

Tarentaise

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 02/01/2018 22:40

DrR my thin ones are soft, but the thicker ones are a bit scratchy. I tend to use the thick one as a mid layer though.

drspouse · 03/01/2018 10:45

Do Aldi have the children's base layers in at the moment?
(Must not be scratchy or the 6yo will have a fit).

turkeyboots · 03/01/2018 12:27

Hello from La Rosiere. It's super windy and wet here, first time I have skied in hail! Hopefully it will pass over soon as entertaining bored children in chalet won't be fun.

MustRememberTheLInFingerling · 03/01/2018 12:33

Afternoon, sneaking in as dh got all decisive a couple of months ago and booked us to go to Val Thorens at the end of this month. It will be the second time skiing for our older 2dc and the first time for the younger 2.

Hoping we get those perfect sunny clear days though 😎

deste · 03/01/2018 17:49

Off to Zell Am See a week on Saturday.
