Lovely sunny day today, we are going to do button lift boot camp with DS just now as the instructors aren't confident he can manage it.

NisekoWhistler · 10/01/2018 17:19

There is a tremendous amount of snow and the piste security and town have been working so hard dealing with it all. Slopes are in fantastic condition and we had a great full day today. Should be a lovely long season for Espace Killy and nearby resorts

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 10/01/2018 17:56

We are heading that way soon. Yey!

drspouse · 11/01/2018 09:58

Got some cross country skis, lovely sunny day, loads of snow!

drspouse · 15/01/2018 09:12

Back home and in skiing withdrawal and washing mountain mode!

DS didn't really remember much from last year so did Beginner again. We are thinking of going to Chill Factor (we are NW England) before going skiing again, or even a weekend in Scotland.
We could drive part way on a Friday and then have two mornings practicing, afternoon of sledging/hot chocolate and back home Sunday PM. Anyone done this at short notice? Would we want to check snow reports on the Tuesday say?

user1494670108 · 15/01/2018 17:05

Drspouse how old is your DS?
I'm taking 11&13 back this year and hoping they remember as they're that bit older

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 15/01/2018 17:05

Great idea to zip to Scotland.never done it though.

Keeping the skills fresh for kids is definitely worth it. Our eldest lost so much from ages 4 to 5 that we went every school hols for an hour to our local fridge. It made such a difference and meant they could ski with us more easily in the PM.

drspouse · 15/01/2018 17:33

He's only just 6 so hopefully the older ones will remember more!

trixymalixy · 15/01/2018 18:06

drspouse, we are in Scotland and ski up north regularly. It's very difficult to plan a ski weekend in Scotland as quite often the weather isn't playing ball.

We tend to keep an eye on the weather mid week and if it looks like conditions are going to be good then plan to go depending on the Friday weather forecast.

We're only an hour and a half away from glencoe though so not a huge deal if we get there and lifts are closed.

You should have a plan b to do some sightseeing if weather isn't good.

trixymalixy · 15/01/2018 18:07

Also if you keep an eye on the Facebook/twitter of the Scottish resorts that'll give you an idea of what weather is expected to be.

drspouse · 15/01/2018 18:46

Ooh helpful thanks.
If the lifts were closed the DCs could do a little with us towing them but we'd have to do sledging or x-country.

IsletsOfLangerhans · 15/01/2018 21:03

for those that ski in Scotland, would you choose Glencoe over Nevis range (or vice versa?) We are staying up that way at half term and I'm planning on stashing the ski stuff in the car boot Grin We have done a couple of family ski weeks abroad, so I’d class us as cautious intermediates...

trixymalixy · 15/01/2018 21:52

Islets we tend to choose Nevis range mainly because they have a four man chairlift which is better for the kids legs as less tiring than drag lifts, but we also particularly love the goose run. Glencoe only has tbars and buttons to the better slopes.

Also Glencoe can be busier as it's closer to Glasgow.

IsletsOfLangerhans · 16/01/2018 08:52

Thanks Trixy. We are closer to Nevis range, so that would work well! We used to live in Edinburgh, so Glenshee was easier to get to.

Idle query - is there a company like Esprit (the childcare element) in North America?

DH is idly wondering about going there next Spring (we may get away with a week off before school term ends, in March 2019).

I'm still angling for Seefeld.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 26/01/2018 22:24

I think Esprit go to North America, or at least Canada

We've just booked our 2019 trip addicted-

SinceWhenDid · 29/01/2018 16:32

Can't believe I missed the skiing in Scotland chat! We ski Cairngorm mainly but the Lecht is best for small kids as they have 2 magic carpets and loads of other fun little kid stuff.

However they had a rapid thaw over the weekend and have lost most of their snow but are hopeful as more snow forecast this week.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 08/02/2018 16:12

I'm pining for a half term trip (greedy - already been twice this season!) but have had to send ds2's passport off for renewal.
My bank balance is hoping that it's not back in time but if it is.......

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 09/02/2018 09:48

We're off tomorrow! Getting excited now! Just some last minute packing to do, make the sandwiches and sausage rolls for the journey, got some leftover Christmas cake to take. Then clean the house as friends will be staying here while we're away.
Happy skiing everyone 🏂

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/02/2018 10:12

Eeek. Just had a text saying the passport is on its way.
Ours have got another week in school before half term. But......... Flights are looking very expensive.

DH is away with work for most of half term and I'm not keen to do the driving all by myself - even with a overnight stop it's a huge amount for one adult.
Will keep looking for a very last minute package type thing.....

Elocutioner · 09/02/2018 10:18

Glad I found this thread - we're off on Sunday!

I'm currently sorting through piles of thermals and random stinky equipment. Must have put my boots away damp last year, oops.

It'll be DC(5)'s second time on snow and I'm so glad I bought everything massive last year - haven't had to buy a thing this year!!

One thing I learned last year was that DC doesn't really need any normal clothes - its either ski stuff in the day or straight into pjs and onesie in the chalet. Will make packing a bit easier. I need to remember slippers for everyone....

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/02/2018 10:23

Where are you all off to?

We were in Tignes over Christmas and Les Arcs a couple of weeks ago...

Elocutioner · 09/02/2018 10:25

We're going to La Tania. It's the exact same chalet we went to last year, which I've never done before, but I reckon when you're taking kids sticking to what you know should make things a lot easier.

We've ditched the shit ESF this year and got an instructor recommended by people who used him last year, so I'm really hopeful that DC will enjoy it.

Anyone know what the snow is like in the alps?

giardiniera · 09/02/2018 12:53

Loads of snow but the weather is very cold and changeable where I'm going!

giardiniera · 09/02/2018 12:54

God I love chalet packing.... we are in a hotel-apartment again and as well as all else you have to take jeans and jumpers etc for dinner - I miss kids eating dinner in their thermals!
