I wondered if we might talk about ditching AIBU, please

seems as though several people are thinking the same...AIBU is such a carbuncle, really.

it was funny at first but now it's just dragging us down imho

I wondered what the official thought was on this?

Thanks.

Oh Hello

Dear Justine,

thankyou for replying. I can see that it is indeed the most popular topic, but as some others have said is this what we really want - popular isn't everything.

I feel it casts a disreputable shadow over the rest of the site.

I have hidden it yesterday evening and it is a relief, however that's not really the point.

I think if you are getting a lot of tiffs in the bar, you don't open a special room for having tiffs in...because anyone who walks into the room will then be presumed to be after a scrap and get laid into very quickly by the waiting hordes.

It's a bit silly really. And the disclaimer is entirely ineffective.

But it is your site, and you must run it as you see fit. I agree with whoever said it's a bit Jeremy Kyle, though...it's a downgrade, essentially. Which makes me very sad.

thankyou for appearing all the same.
Best wishes,
Flight

It just gets better and better. Do you lot take lessons in this stuff?

Good post above, BTW, Flight

Yes I do think that people who want a fight would fight in Chat or wherever. I suppose at least in AIBU they're all out of everyone else's way!

But also I think AIBU does encourage people to post the most ridiculous things. 'AIBU to not want this big fierce dog to be left alone with my baby who likes pulling dogs' tails?' and things like that. I've done it too, I admit. It removes the ability to think for yourself and gives people permission to have a pop at you.

Greensleeves · 15/04/2010 12:15

VTits, sometimes people say that, and then I go and do something appalling that makes them wish they'd never said it

Fliight · 15/04/2010 12:42

But they still fight in chat.

There are scraps all over the shop. Having a 'scrap room' isn't cutting it. It just makes for a very unpleasant section of the hostelry that anyone with sense will avoid.

It doesn't stop there being the usual fights about random stuff, as and when. It just provides a free for all situation and the scrapping increases to fill the void.

It's like when you buy another toy box.

Agree with Flight there are MN fights everywhere. The worst two fights I ever had were in Chat.

Maybe we can we have a Cage Fight thread. No hold barred but everyone name changes before entering.

Fliight · 15/04/2010 15:57

Well we don't allow personal attacks and deliberate flaming but we do need you to report them, as we simply don't have the resources to watch everything. Also we would be loathe to semi-moderate, miss things and potentially come across as biased - best that we stick to our policy of we'll delete it if reported I think?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 15/04/2010 16:06

Are you saying that the existence of AIBU creates a culture that bleeds into other Topics, because that's what I sometimes think. People are in a combative mood, and then forget they aren't on AIBU when they go a Relationship thread, for instance. I'm not talking about being straightforward, BTW. I like that. It's when someone says FFS, and doesn't seem to be able to take account of the mental state of the person who has posted.

Fliight · 15/04/2010 16:09

Exactly Jamie.

It legitimises, somehow, the approach that seems to have become endemic in that topic.

Justine, that still stands of course - but personal attacks seem far more common in AIBU. Or is that not your experience?
