I wondered if we might talk about ditching AIBU, please

seems as though several people are thinking the same...AIBU is such a carbuncle, really.

it was funny at first but now it's just dragging us down imho

I wondered what the official thought was on this?

Thanks.

I find it quite entertaining, but I'm not so entrenched in MN to worry about people's opinions.

waitingforbedtime · 14/04/2010 15:11

I dont suppose my opinion is worth much and I do post on AIBU but I do think people use it as an excuse to be rude and unhelpful tbh, not that 'fluffy' answers to everyhting is the way to go but I dont think reading AIBU would give the best impression of MN.

That said, I do enjoy the debates!

TrillianAstra · 14/04/2010 15:11

You can hide whole topics you know.

Then it won't drag you anywhere.

GypsyMoth · 14/04/2010 15:11

ts one of many topics.....its fine imo....

there is the facility to hide topics, which i find best!

brimfull · 14/04/2010 15:13

i hate it
avoid most of them

yes lets ditch it

southeastastra · 14/04/2010 15:13

if you put mumsnet on google the aibu section is first up. the other popular forums. i agree with you, i dislike it, but they will never get rid now. too much traffic on there.

mamazon · 14/04/2010 15:15

the evolution of AIBU created the dissolution of manners and polite intelligent debate on MN.

IMHO

traceybath · 14/04/2010 15:16

But that along with S&B are the most popular/used bits of the site I think.

Am sure Justine has said that in interviews.

So a lot of people do like it.

I find it too scary and stick to the lovely S&B threads.

SleepingLion · 14/04/2010 15:17

I don't mind the topic itself so much - just the frankly ridiculous threads people start on there:

AIBU to have a front door?
AIBU to ask your opinion on this outfit?
AIBU to need oxygen to survive?

shesdrivingmecrazy · 14/04/2010 15:19

Can we ban people who want to ditch AIBU but have a long history of posting on it themselves?

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/04/2010 15:22

For once I am going to come down on the side of "If you don't like it, hide it." Agree its over-used, agree people can be very ill mannered on there (but, frankly, that happens in each and every topic on the board) but it is not ALL bad.

Fliight · 14/04/2010 15:23

I don't care that much for myself, but I think it's bad for mumsnet.

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 14/04/2010 15:24

er,how would you even go about 'ditching' it may i ask??

Style and beauty?

TrillianAstra · 14/04/2010 15:34

I would vote for a rule that said that AIBU titles have to form a sentence starting with 'Am I being unreasonable...'

Bucharest · 14/04/2010 15:37

If you got rid of it (and I wouldn't want to, I just participate in the ones I have an opinion on and ignore the rest) then the AIBUs would just be all over the place, and the posters who wanted to not do them would find themselves in somewhere nice and cosy and an AIBU-disguised would jump out and say boo.

ginghamgiraffe · 14/04/2010 15:37

style & beauty aka what shall I wear today?!|

Threelittleducks · 14/04/2010 15:38

I've just posted on an AIBU thread and I must say some of the language/manners on that board are atrocious! SO rude!

How about renaming it to IWAGITM?
(I want abuse, give it to me)

Greensleeves · 14/04/2010 15:38

I LIKE AIBU

and judging by the traffic, so do los of other people

people have always been blisteringly rude on MN

there are naicer sites aplenty

and I think despite the abrasiveness people DO get good balanced advice and a snapshot of popular opinions on AIBU

BuzzingNoise · 14/04/2010 15:41

I like AIBU.

BitOfFun · 14/04/2010 15:43

People would pay good money for that, ThreeLittleDucks

Goblinchild · 14/04/2010 15:44

S & B is one of the many topics I've chosen to hide. It's not something I'm interested in or want to be associated with. However, I don't mind it existing for the pleasure of others.
AIBU is entertaining and keeps those who like offering spiky, uncensored opinions in a box labelled AIBU.
If it was done away with, as Bucharest posted, then the same opinions would be offered on every topic without warning, possibly upsetting a much wider audience. Exercise your right to choose, without censoring other adults who want to speak their minds.
I don't like the sex threads either...

Whoamireally · 14/04/2010 15:44

I like AIBU
I always go there when having a bad day because it's a good way of venting my spleen legitimately

So agree with renaming IWAGITM. There are 'givers' in this world (me) and 'takers'. AIBU is therefore fulfilling an important social purpose.

What annoys me though is people who already know they ABU and therefore don't need to be told they ABU. It's almost like bragging about their unreasonableness and defeats the object.

MrsShu · 14/04/2010 15:45

god yes
" aibu to breathe all day"

yes you are dont breathe
how dare you say dont breathe

well ok then breathe
