I wondered if we might talk about ditching AIBU, please

Fliight · 14/04/2010 15:09

seems as though several people are thinking the same...AIBU is such a carbuncle, really.

it was funny at first but now it's just dragging us down imho

I wondered what the official thought was on this?

Thanks.

I would mind AIBU less if people did not say FFS. I don't know why, but I find FFS unnecessarily abrasive.

However, the straight talking on AIBU is very refreshing. People just don't get away with casual smuggery, racism, or judgeyness.

we're honest straight talking
not bitches

i agree with Fliight, and wannabe, and others who have the same sentiments.

someone has already posted on this thread saying they use it after having a bad day so they can legitimately v ent their spleen- is that what it is about??? going there to pick on people because you've had a bad day yourself???? nice

there were always TONS of aibu threads, I remember when people used to always put AIBU number 498693048690386 and stuff, because we acknowledged there were lots

but those threads didn't invite the abuse and downright nastiness that the AIBU topic does. People DO take it as some kind of invitation tojust get stuck in. the disclaimer rightly points out that you ought to expect some people to disagree with you, which is fair enough. That doesn't mean that people need to be rude, spiteful, nasty and forget all about the manners which IMO apply just as much online as they do in real life

it's all well and good saying "hide it"- but that isn't the point is it? the point is that it has become a fairly nasty part of mumsnet, and as it gets a lot of traffic many NEW members are going to stumble across it first, and I think a lot would be put off.
If I were running mumsnet it wouldn't be the image I wanted to portray of my site.

thisisyesterday · 14/04/2010 21:02

in fact, i think we ought to get rid of a LOT of topics. Has anyone at mnhq actually pretended to be a first time user and tried to figure out where to post something???

it's impossible. there are waaaaayyy too many now.

AnyFucker · 14/04/2010 21:06

thisisyesterday...perhaps you should oust Justine and her colleagues and take over the administration of MN yourself ?

thisisyesterday · 14/04/2010 21:11

why? because I have an opinion on it?? same goes for most people on this thread surely?

what a bizarre statement

AnyFucker · 14/04/2010 21:14

you listed quite a few opinions there, actully, tiy

perhaps you think you could do a better job ?

ChickensHaveSinisterMotives · 14/04/2010 21:15

I like AIBU. I don't like S&B, so I hide it. Seems a simple solution.

MerlinsBeard · 14/04/2010 21:16

there are FAR too many topics now

thisisyesterday · 14/04/2010 21:18

yes, I do have opinions on quite a lot of things actually. is that a problem?

I think mnhq do a grand job of running the site actually. that doesn't mean I am not allowed to think that the AIBU topic casts them in a bad light does it?

or do i have to pretend to LOVE everything about it in order to post here???

sorry, i am really at a loss as to why you are particularly singling me out here on a thread full of people with opinions on it...
if you have a problem with me specifically, unrelated to this thread, then please... tell me

tethersend · 14/04/2010 21:19

Move it over to AIBU, ladies

EggyAllenPoe · 14/04/2010 21:20

i enjoy AIBU, but not for spleen venting but as a board of legitimate discussion, i don't think the nature of the board excuses any individual poster being nasty.

I quite like a good firm debate. Can't abide boards that are all about support, where even if the OP is being a total ijit, any suggestion they may be being unwise has to be veiled in the guise of sympathetic advice. Though of course, for a persn feeling a bit weak, AIBU relly isn't the place.

AnyFucker · 14/04/2010 21:21

it seems to me that if a person has so many "problems" with something, then I would wonder why they were here

is that so hard to understand ?

and I don't have a problem with you personally TIY...I find that bizarre if we are talking about bizarre things

MerlinsBeard · 14/04/2010 21:21

i just remembered there had been additions to the segregation and went to adjust which threads i hide....WTF is mumsNOT?

OrmRenewed · 14/04/2010 21:22

Yep. Ditch it.

It's not the replies that upset me. It's the fact that the OPs don't need to be there - they are only there because no-one takes any notice if you post the in specific topics and chat disappears to quick.

And reading down the thread titles prompts me to scream 'YES YOU FUCKING ARE' and headbutt the table. Even my own.

brimfull · 14/04/2010 21:23

I think the topics list should be alphabetical - but we've asked for this before

thisisyesterday · 14/04/2010 21:27

oh yes, i have SOOOOOO many problems

i dislike the nastiness that goes on in AIBU
and i think there are too many topics

clearly I should leave.

whomovedmychocolate · 14/04/2010 21:27

I do think there is a valid point that for newbies it's difficult to know where to post. There do seem to be a hell of a lot of topics.

Perhaps though the solution is to present them differently. Thus you put the most popular at the top of the list when people first click on Talk. Simple optimisation really.

thisisyesterday · 14/04/2010 21:29

i wasn't the first to post the same thoughts on the OP either... so I am really at a loss as to why you are singling me out on it. the only extra thing I said was that I thought we had more topics.

so... come on, why pick on me and not one of the other posters who said the exact same stuff?

JustineMumsnet · 14/04/2010 21:31

ggirl you can list topics alphabetically - see show all a-z link on Talk home page

Maybe we should think about listing according to most popular too...

MerlinsBeard · 14/04/2010 21:31

ggirl, if you click on all topics it is alphabetical

AnyFucker · 14/04/2010 21:32

tiy, don't take it personally

that would be silly

people get picked up on a particular post all the time

timing ? something catches the eye ? the vociferousness of the post ? the detail of the moan ?

come on, you know how it works

and fwiw, questioning why someone is here is not the same as telling them they should leave

as you well know...
