I wondered if we might talk about ditching AIBU, please

seems as though several people are thinking the same...AIBU is such a carbuncle, really.

it was funny at first but now it's just dragging us down imho

I wondered what the official thought was on this?

Thanks.

Bloody brilliant, MrsShu- in particular the first two lines

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/04/2010 17:50

I only have about 10 topics on the go.

The one I am most glad I hid is Mental Health. Most of the ops on there were making me angry rather than sympathetic so it was time to move them across.

I keep umming and aaahing about Relationships. Think that will go soon.

I love Baby Names. We have a whole alternative beat culture going on in there that you naysayers know nothing about.

DecorHate · 14/04/2010 17:52

Haven't read all the opinions but I feel it is over-used. Eg instead of keeping wedding threads in the wedding section we'll get all the repetetive threads in aibu... Sort of defeats the purpose of being able to hide topics if everything is in aibu which it seems to be at the moment...

MmeLindt · 14/04/2010 17:55

lol MrsShu

I like AIBU, although I do like the "Am I being a tad overwrought" suggestion. Perhaps with the addition of

AIBPFB

If you don't like it, hide it.

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 14/04/2010 17:55

It certainly is overused! People use it for chatting. Because it's busy and more likely to get replies.

So instead of it being people who actually want opinions on an issue, it's full of AIBU to feel like having a takeaway. AIBU to want to watch dr who. AIBU to want a natter cos the kids are asleep, dh is watching the news and I'm lonely. (ahem. )

So imo, it would be good to stay if people would STOP trying to make every little natter they wanted to have fit the AIBU to... format. And use the other topics.

Fliight · 14/04/2010 18:07

It's at this juncture that i probably ought to mention that the only topic I can actually see, is site stuff.

It allows me to complain very peacefully and often totally without compunction, about nearly everything.

AnyFucker · 14/04/2010 18:18

I have flounced from the relationships thread several times

There is a particular one on there right now that is making me pull my hair out, out by one

It might be time...

EndangeredSpecies · 14/04/2010 18:20

Love the idea of a trolls topic. Can we have troll emoticons as well?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 14/04/2010 18:37

Someone IBU to diss Baby Names. It's where I go to escape the venom of AIBU.

I find AIBU v funny at times. At other times, I despair that it's where a casual outsider might think MN begins and ends. The fact that it's what comes up first when you google MN means that new people come on, post on a subject they are actually quite (sometimes unreasonably) emotional about, and get their arses kicked, which is a shame.

MrsShu · 14/04/2010 19:27

i laugh( in a sigh kind of way)
when someone with a shit h we haev read thread after thread about then says how magnificent it is he put the milk bottles out...

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/04/2010 19:30

MrsShu, I badly need your help. Am gonna email you. I think I have a CAT from you. Please be poised.

Alouiseg · 14/04/2010 19:32

Please don't take AIBU away.

I would have to decamp to anther forum to find something similar...................which might please the people i have mahoosive disagreements with on aibu, but then they might enjoy it as much as i do!

Rockbird · 14/04/2010 19:42

I read this earlier and thought no way should AIBU go. But there's one on there tonight which I have just lost patience with and now I've hidden the topic. Half my active convos have gone but I feel happier

MrsShu · 14/04/2010 19:45

you aint got oen from me
my ££ ran out

Dumbledoresgirl · 14/04/2010 19:49

I have just hidden AIBU too and it is wonderful! Active convos consists of gentle quiet chat and old fashioned advice swapping. S&B seems rather too prominent for my liking now, but I sometimes get ideas from those threads so I think I will just hide individual threads rather than the whole topic.

Do try hiding AIBU if you don't like it. I can't imagine why I didn't do so ages ago.

MrsShu · 14/04/2010 19:49

oh i see in the past
am ready and poised.

£60 and three points?!

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/04/2010 20:12

Just doing bed and stuff.

Will start another thread rather than behind-the-scenes nonsense.

BeenBeta · 14/04/2010 20:18

I like AIBU - good debates there usually. If it is banned then they will end up in chat as others said.

Surely, just hide Topics you dont like.

Relationships drive me mad, BF/Birthing/Femism threads get me into trouble so I hide all those and Style & Beauty is only for special occassions.

whomovedmychocolate · 14/04/2010 20:25

I like AIBU - but I think it should be AIBAT (Am I Being A Twunt) because then we could all just wade in yelling 'complete twuntery'; 'twuntastic' etc.

I think we should all rate AIBUs as well (as in 1/10 on the crazy bitch scale or 10/10, you are indeed a complete nutter, clearly redirect your browser to Bounty.com.)

tethersend · 14/04/2010 20:27

YABU.

JustineMumsnet · 14/04/2010 20:32

My dear Mumsnetters, the only reason we have an AIBU topic is because SO MANY threads were being started with the words Am I being unreasonable... We have helpfully collected them all into one place so those who hate those threads can hide em.

And yes it is our most popular topic, followed by chat, relationships, style and beauty and pregnancy.

We are equally bemused why folks don't use WWYD more, as this was partly introduced to try to offer a less confrontational space to ask general advice.

ilovepiccolina · 14/04/2010 20:33

YABVVU

whomovedmychocolate · 14/04/2010 20:34

WWYD doesn't work.....it's I think this, this is what I plan to do, what do you think? Very closed.

Whereas AIBU is more gladiatorial - and sometimes lavatorial - and that's why I like it.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/04/2010 20:39

WWYD doesn't have to be closed at all, as the one I started tonight may show.

wannaBe · 14/04/2010 20:41

the problem with ibu is that it is basically seen as a free for all for people to say whatever they want to an op and the op seemingly loses the right to be upset about that because "if you didn't want a kicking then don't post in ibu."

And considering this is the first topic that comes up if you google mn this is the first impression people get of mn.

And given justine was on bbc only the other day waxing lyrical about how ibu is mn's favourite topic, it's clear that mn hq are proud of the reputation mn has of being a site full of bitches.

People are deluded if they think that mn has a good reputation elsewhere - it doesn't.
