What SINGLE thing would make Mumsnet better for you?

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/03/2010 16:31

Thread rules:

  1. please be respectful to mnhq, this is not a bitch fest about MN
  1. only one THING per poster (or, if you must, you can have more than one but they must be on separate posts).

My thread. My rules. No arguments.

Right, I will start:

I do wish people would spend more time reading than posting. So often you have a thread (quite often an AIBU) where someone says "I haven't read the thread but YABU" or more often lately the highly unnecessary YABVVVVVVVVU when the thread has moved on hugely since the op, the arguments have all been had, everyone has bitched and moaned, made up, had a cup of tea, done a bit of ironing. If there is a slightly sparky looking OP and hundreds of posts on a thread, why not take that as a clue that the thread may well have moved on, questions asked and answers given, and read before you post?

OP posts:
badgermonkey · 19/03/2010 18:16

The long-mooted iPhone app, please!

EccentricaGallumbits · 19/03/2010 18:16

Make it PINK!

and sparkly

MmeLindt · 19/03/2010 18:28

Lymond
It is a very good idea, Sorry for being so lazy, and not going back and searching for your name.

Good post

Tick box is a great idea. I could go down Active convos in a trice.

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/03/2010 18:37

What do we think about name changing?

Specifically, name changers who only change to post something malicious?

I have heard it said in these here parts that name changing is a problem on Mumsnet because it is so easy.

Am not very experienced on other forums (sorry, don't do fora) so not too sure about this myself.

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 19/03/2010 18:43

If you hover over my name then you can see my status....... I put my name change their

MarsLady · 19/03/2010 18:44

If a large glass of red appeared each evening when I opened MN!

GypsyMoth · 19/03/2010 18:47

*there

Dumbledoresgirl · 19/03/2010 18:49

Only read the OP and Bibbity, I agree with you completely, but if I could only change one thing it would be to get rid of AIBU altogether.

I know we are not allowed to say this, but the advent of AIBU completely changed MN for the worse imo.

And now, active convos seem to consist entirely of AIBU threads, and not just the kind of thing that are guaranteed to become a bun fight, eg AIBU to not want poor kids at the school? but also things that used to sit very nicely in chat, eg AIBU to want to make myself a cup of tea after the day I have just had? Or AIBU to expect the teacher to know my child's name? or other utterly pointless threads. AIBU, if you have to have it, should at least be confined to subjects which can be discussed, not things that are patently obvious from the start.

But, I want AIBU to be dropped.

End of rant.

Might read rest of the thread now.

MollieO · 19/03/2010 18:51

Having the 'Talk' and 'Threads' banner at the bottom of the page as well as the top. It is tedious to have to scroll up to change topics.

Slubberdegullion · 19/03/2010 18:52

I agree with DG.

but as I am only allowed one request I'm sticking with cut glass tumblers as, thank the good Lord, I can hide aibu and all its ghastliness.

Dumbledoresgirl · 19/03/2010 18:57

I also like it when people say "I agree with DG" and it doesn't happen enough now certain members have left, so Mn would be better for me if someone was made to say "I agree with DG after my every post"

I know I could hide AIBU, but I am worried that I will miss the sort of thread I used to enjoy in chat, as per my post below.

Dumbledoresgirl · 19/03/2010 18:59

Oh sod it, sorry that previous post was incomprehensible. At the very least, the quotation marks are in the wrong place. I'll leave the brainier of you to work out what I was trying to say.

Slubberdegullion · 19/03/2010 19:00

No just hide it.

It's like opening all the windows and sucking a menthol sweetie.

all the whiny RUBBISH is just cleared away for good.

Hassled · 19/03/2010 19:05

A better awareness of the available topics. Find the right topic, FGS. No random posting in AIBU when it's clearly about potty training.

If I were a filing system I would be weeping. Actually I'm weeping anyway. There's a reason the Dewey Decimal was invented, you know.

Dumbledoresgirl · 19/03/2010 19:07

I still think getting rid of AIBU would be the simplest solution all round.

EggyAllenPoe · 19/03/2010 19:07

i would like tree & branch posting, so you can reply directly to any poster in a thread, and start your own little side-thread, without hijacking the core of the thread.

i think my husband would like MN to experience 'technical difficulties' on friday nights so that i would talk to him...

FabIsWantingToFallApart · 19/03/2010 19:11

That when you search you could just do search for any of my user names.

scrappydappydoo · 19/03/2010 19:13

I would like the ability to hover over a thread title and read the first few sentences of the op so I can decide whether to bother clicking to open it.

I like the idea of a reward system - 100,000 and you get a mooncup....

Slubberdegullion · 19/03/2010 19:14

you know the worst thing about the whole damnable topic, the way that despite hiding it it seeps under the doorway and infects everything.

Only the other day I was told I was BU or NBU (I forget which) and I wasn't even fucking asking if I was being unreasonable or not.

sod off aibu and stay in your stinking hole of misery and moping.

Igglybuff · 19/03/2010 19:15

I'd like MN to be more compatible with iPhones/small internet phones. Basically get rid of the column of ads etc on the right at the top of the thread (or move them).

TrillianAstra · 19/03/2010 19:15

Threads I'm On ordered by most recent post by anyone, not just most recent post by me.

Oh, and fixing it so that I get pages when I click from 'threads I'm on' through to a thread. That doesn't count as a second thing because it used to work but is now broken.

BitOfFun · 19/03/2010 19:16

I'd like to be able to put a little exclamation mark next to some posters' names so I can remember who I think is a twit.

SuSylvester · 19/03/2010 19:16

youlot whingeing again?

Bumnoise · 19/03/2010 19:17

A quote box.
