What SINGLE thing would make Mumsnet better for you?

Thread rules:

  1. please be respectful to mnhq, this is not a bitch fest about MN
  1. only one THING per poster (or, if you must, you can have more than one but they must be on separate posts).

My thread. My rules. No arguments.

Right, I will start:

I do wish people would spend more time reading than posting. So often you have a thread (quite often an AIBU) where someone says "I haven't read the thread but YABU" or more often lately the highly unnecessary YABVVVVVVVVU when the thread has moved on hugely since the op, the arguments have all been had, everyone has bitched and moaned, made up, had a cup of tea, done a bit of ironing. If there is a slightly sparky looking OP and hundreds of posts on a thread, why not take that as a clue that the thread may well have moved on, questions asked and answers given, and read before you post?

Oh good one ThreeBlondeBoys. Yes, it does take a long time to hide threads.

Would make it better for me too bibbitybobbityhat.

That's a nice Friday afternoon picture - I've cheered up considerably

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/03/2010 16:49

Yes, please pay attention.

and the Friday Night topic- and since MNHQ didn't see my post on the other thread amoungst all the sex talk.

I suggested that it was an opt in topic with a 24 hour delay so you couldn't join then post immediately to avoid some of the drunk trolling.

Automatic text speak filter

Automatic new paragraph inserter

I know that's two. Shoot me

ilovemydogandmrobama · 19/03/2010 16:52

Being able to hide a theme. For me, it's the dog shit threads (every week or so) and 'How Stupid Are Americans' threads (every few weeks) They pop up all over the place. AIBU. Chat.

Shaz10 · 19/03/2010 16:52

Unless I'm doing it wrong, I'd like to be able to jump to the first unread post in the thread.

DebiNewberry · 19/03/2010 16:53

If, everytime after I posted, somebody said:

Great post DebiNewberry.

Nymphadora · 19/03/2010 16:53

Oh and I STILL see text speak and I don't want to tell everyone individually so can we have a note on the antenatal/pregnancy/conception threads as that's where a lot of the newbies are.

(see one topic per post bibbitybobbity )

UnquietDad · 19/03/2010 16:54

Ability to edit or delete own posts retrospectively would be good. On other forums I contribute to, you can do so within a certain time-frame.

Failing that, I was going to say ability to quote in responses other than just by cutting-and-pasting, but that can produce difficulties where people are taken out of context and "fisked".

bibbitybobbityhat · 19/03/2010 16:55

Gold star Nymph.

Squeaver will go and stand in the corridor for 10 minutes.

Gold star smiley would be nice, come to think of it.

  • text speak filter than translates it into a proper sentence.
  • self destruct button which makes it go off at 10pm every night so I can go to bed.
  • for some people to be a bit more polite and not lynch posters for the tinest reason. Although I do like the swearing, but a bit of compassion wouldn't go amiss.
cornsilk · 19/03/2010 16:59

lost in wales you are norty! How do I know it's actusally him though?

lostinwales · 19/03/2010 16:59

I didn't realise I had to opt in to seeing SN on the main list of active convo's, so I missed a lot for the first six months before I had a real look round. That may be down to me not looking hard enough at first though.

PuppyMonkey · 19/03/2010 17:01

Great post DebiNewberry.

It would be good if someone would make themselves available to go through all the very long threads and post a brief summery which shows up in a red box when you hover your mouse over the thread title. Eg: This thread starts off as a moan about MIL, moves quickly onto bumsex and currently is discussing how the last series of Lost will end. You know that sort of thing, so you can see if it's worth your while reading through.

Don't want much do I?

same photo shoot, just cropped disappointingly cornsilk

Sorry but once you mentioned naked Keanu I knew I wouldn't be satisfied (ooh er) until I'd found him. Really hoping DH dosen't check history on computer later!

2shoes · 19/03/2010 17:03

that no one should tell you what you can post

nickelbabe · 19/03/2010 17:04

i'm sorry, bibbity, i haven't read the entire thread, but i would hope you haven't moved on.
sorry if mine's already been mentioned.

i would like in the list of threads, that as well as saying who was the last person to post, it would have a column for who started the thread.

sometimes it's quite important to know this (especially if it's quite a difficult subject or you know it's someone who will need support quickly)
